I don't think Microsoft has to worry about Linux taking over desktop computing for quite sometime. No average user can use Linux and buy all the silly programs that go along with it. Microsoft needs to worry about Apple for that battle. Now when it comes to Server Platforms, Microsoft has every reason int he world to worry. With good reason too.

Microsoft owns and will own desktop computers and home-end users for quite awhile. Linux can't compete on that level yet. But they can work the server community pretty well.

Possible problem to this is add on 3rd party features that did not like the update to IE security. (i.e. pop-up blockers, skinners, object desktop, windowsblinds, etc) Simple reinstallation of these programs would have fixed the problem I imagine.

3.) My scanner would scan in all pitch dark pictures.

This again is either a driver or software problem with SP1. That or a hardware issue. I can't imagine SP1 did this directly.

4.) My graphics card would just get dll errors in the middle of games that would work before.

Driver yet again that or drivers that are incompatible with an older version of DX. An upgrade to 9 is suggested.

I re-norton ghosted back an image of pre SP1, and all was in harmony again. You can pay me to touch SP2.

As for using Norton to go back? Windows has two built in features dealing with SP1 to remove the pack. The first is the option where SP1 asked if you wanted to back up your files or not for an uninstallation. If you clicked yes you could simply go under "Add/Remove Programs" and take off SP1. The other option is the "System Restore" feature built into Xp that would allow you to role back to before the installation and remove SP1.

Seems like you have old drivers and went way out of your way to remove SP1.

This isn't a marketing strategy for Longhorn this is just standard business practice. Why support a product that is out-of-date when there are newer and better options?

Can you honestly expect Microsoft to support 98 for the next 10 years? Or XP for the next 15? Of course not and it is silly to think so.

Hell that recipe I gave you for "free" might not even make beer but maybe an alcoholic paste instead. So cost has to go into the recipe. To say a "free beer recipe" is just sheer ignorance. No way. Can't ben done without actually trial and error to make the recipe work. Whether the beer tastes good or not is another issue all together.

Now as for the use of networks and the sort for the Linux install, yeah it will ger cheaper. Never zero. That isn't what I was talking about. I am talking about how Linux isn't really free. I was trying tog et the point across that the user's of Linux take and rarely give.

Free beer? There is no such thing. My high school economics tracher taught me that. Just like Linux us really free. I mean they say it is free but really, there is no way it can be.

Lets take Red Hook beer for example in comparison to a Linux Distribution. So you have to make the beer which takes labor. Now unless someone volunteers their own free time to process the 4 key ingredients you have to pay that certain person a wage. However no idiot can go out and make beer. You have to have someone who knows what they are doing as beer is a fine substance to produce.

So to make red hook beer you have 4 components. Water, Wheat, Barley and Hops. Well the water is cleaned fromt he water company which costs money. Then there are the other 3 components which must be grown properly and harvested. Since it takes quite sometime to get those 3 items someone would be insane not to get paid for it.

Alright then you have to have a smart person combine them in a proper way. (Fermentation, cooling, extraction, etc.) Now yes someone can do this for free as making beer is fun, however no idiot can make Red Hook beer. To be a brew master you have to have 20 years exp in the factory itself ontop of a degree in biocemestry. Both of which cost the compenty money and the individual money.

So this brings us to basically after the beer was processed and the such, where you get it for free. Wow. Sure doesn't seem free to me. I mean sure as a consumer it is free but all the money that was spent on that beer you got free. Someone lost something apparently.

Same with Linux. No guy off the street can program and manage it. You need someone who knows what they are doing. Can't have some 20 year old with personal programming experience rewriting the kernel with sloppy ass code. More importnatly the CD's the OS is copied onto cost money from someones pocket. (Unless you use a network to install it onto but that costs money to buy and setup) You can also chalk up a few dollars to advertising and keeping a website up and running so people can hear about your product.

So really Linux isn't really free. Sure as a company I can go download the OS and throw it on a CD and use the OS to make my company profit. But that doesn't really help out the hard working individuals that put the OS together. So they spend their time (wasteing their time) Bug fixing and writing more code for linux while I paid for nothing. That seems so fair and true that it should be the american way. Use the work of other individuals, take what they created, use it to my own ends and pay nothing. God I love this country. Long live Open Source! WOO WOO!

I will say this being a photog. If you are going to switch to digital photography and are heavily into photo-editing to the point where you actually bought Adobe Photoshop (versus pirating it) then I recommend getting a Digital SLR camera. I would wait to see what Canon or Nikon will throw out next. As if they throw out something better, the current Rebel is going to drop a bit in price. (Save yourself some money)

The most expensive thing in photography isn't the camera. It is your lenses.

Now if you aren't the heaviest photo editor but want to get into digital and leave film behind you, then go get one of the compact digi cameras like the Elf. It will suit your means just fine.

As for all you film buffs out there who refuse to switch, don't worry, film isn't going anywhere. It may get used less for conventional purposes, but film still has its use. Believe me, I know. If you are worried that Digi cameras are going to surpass film. Don't worry, they will. It is just a matter of time till Digi cameras take better quality pictures than 35mm. But if you are the serious Photog, you always know there is medium format followed up by Large Format.

I hope any of this advie helps. Oh and my N90s will never ever hit Ebay. It is too cherry of a camera to just throw it up for sale. Now if it was an Elan II then sure, then again I am not a fan of the Eos lineup at all.

You simply cannot compare the two. They not only two different ballparks they are two different games. If a computer fails to be secure because some guy who has a preternatural talent; hacks, cracks and compromises the security of a computer system... no ones life si threatened.
