I'm just trying to understand your principle for determining whether something is fascism. You seemed to suggest originally that if you had to pay for something and you didn't use it, then that was fascism. So, given these clarifications, it's that even if you don't use it now, if you might use it in the future or have used it in the past or if it might benefit a loved-one then it's not fascism, but otherwise the original principle holds.
You should also distinguish between using something and benefitting from it. You may benefit from public television even though you don't use it. You benefit from living in a better-informed society because there is an alternative to commercial TV. Just as you may benefit indirectly from medical research into diseases you can't get, you may benefit indirectly from something that you don't use.
I'm starting to wonder whether it wouldn't just be more efficient to pay the ARD and ZDF out of general taxes. I would guess that a large proportion of households in Germany have either a TV or a computer. Money could be saved which is currently paid to enforce the payment of the fees.
This is probably the most exposure that Multatuli has had in 100 years. I believe that in parts of Europe they refer to Fair Trade coffee as Max Havelaar coffee though.
Did you watch the movie? Did you? I'm guessing you didn't since you wanted to talk about the website more than the movie. Don't bitch about how it's image-building before you've even see it. Post again after you've watched it and I might take you seriously.
The Executive branch reports to one man, the President. If Bush doesn't want to take responsibility for the Executive branch, then he's free to go back to Crawford.
Explain to me the reasoning that says, "there's something wrong here, so we should do away with the whole program" because I can't understand it. They should be fixing the problem, not shutting down the program.
Michael Powell was on NPR yesterday and he was asked about the fact that FCC only censors broadcast media and not cable and satellite radio. He basically said that this was outdated and suggested that cable and broadcast should be treated similarly. If Bush wins in November, say goodbye to the Sopranos. The thought police have decided that we need protected from the bad words.
So, there's no reason to believe that these changes will prevent fraud in the program, but it is certain that these changes will prevent schools from getting money for legitimate and vitally necessary uses. Then, they make the change and fail to tell anybody about it, including umm, Congress. Yeah, remember them... in that big building on that hill. Yep. This has all of the hallmarks of the present administration.
True. That wasn't in dispute, and no one was suggesting that things should continue as they are. The question is whether the steps the FCC have taken are necessary and effective to deal with the fraud. The NY Times article made this quite clear.
At Tuesday's hearing, lawmakers and an executive of Universal Service said that many of the most significant changes would not make it easier to perform audits or root out fraud and waste.
That acknowledgment prompted concern from the lawmakers.
"It's really difficult to understand why these changes were made,'' said Senator Olympia J. Snowe, a Maine Republican who helped draft the legislation that created the E-Rate program in 1996.
Senator Conrad Burns, Republican of Montana, also criticized the tighter regulations, which have led to a cash squeeze at the program, and the recent quick sale of the program's investments.
"I fail to see how these series of events have led to a more efficient management of the funds,'' he said.
Of course, I don't mean that you should register your friends on their behalf. I mean, you should give them a registration form and suggest that they send it in. Registration forms are available at the Post Office.
By all means I wouldn't suggest that you follow the example of the RNC in Nevada and pay temps to fill out fraudulant registration forms.
It's not American paranoia. No one supports this or believes this bullshit justification. It's just that no one will report on it, no one will hear about it and given that the Republicans control the executive and both branches of Congress, there will be no debate on the matter. That's what's really sad. When absolute power rests in the hands of those who have no respect for liberty, this is the result.
The deadlines to register to vote are approaching in many states. If this kind of bullshit bothers you, then register, vote and do something about it. Register your friends too, at least those friends who haven't drunk the kool-aid.
I'm always amazed at the creativity that the Bush administration shows. They just never stop thinking of new ways to screw the consumer. This is almost as good as making everyone pay to have their phone tapped.
This is a setback but I it won't have precedential value unless the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals upholds the decision. Wait until then to get really indignant.

3. If your e-commerce app is garbage, then the system built with it will suck, regardless of whether it's on Linux or Windows.
IT managers need to have some common sense. They should have known all of these things before they ever deployed the system they did. The fact that they didn't take these things into account says more about their IT planning process than about the intrinsic qualitites of each platform. Every IT manager has to make intelligent choices based on their own circumstances and requirements.
No. Libertarians believe that government shouln't spend less and should tax less. Bush believes that it should spend more and tax less. I'm still trying to get my bank to see things that way. Social Security works by people who are now working paying for people who are now retired. What happens when those people who are paying the retirees through their social security taxes start paying that money into their own private retirement accounts. Is Bush going to cut the social security of existing retirees? No! He wants the elderly vote. He's going to pay the benefit out of the general budget. The Libertarian solution would be to eliminate social security taxes and eliminate the social security benefit too. If there are some poor elderly, they can move in with their kids. It's not the Bush have-his-cake-and-eat-it-too solution, but it makes sense.
I don't think you understand what a Libertarian is, and therefore that you didn't read Badnarik's replies. Why wouldn't right-wingers vote Libertarian? Libertarians are right-wingers. Libertarians believe in personal liberties and so they don't agree with those fundie right-wingers who think sodomy should be illegal, but they also think that government should be extremely limited and taxes should be very minimal. So, in that sense they are definitely "right-wingers". Maybe you should check out this link.
I think this is a bad time for "Republitarians" to take the "pragmatic" approach. They need to stand up for what they believe in, this election more than any other. They need to send a signal to the GOP that they aren't going to put up with Bush's spend-spend-spend policies. Bush just outlined $3 trillion in new spending for his next administration (that's trillion with a "T"). This guy is totally out-of-control.

I don't have any kids, but I still pay taxes which pay for other people's kids to go to school. Is that fascism?
I don't have a car, but I pay taxes which go to pave the roads. Is that fascism?
I'm not a woman, but I pay taxes which go to research cures for cervical and uterine cancer. Is that fascism?

Actually you better ask for Cheney. Otherwise, Bush is going to mess up the big words when he has to relay the message to him.

You're missing the point though. The question that was raised by Congress was whether the changes made would prevent cases such as these.
Michael Powell was on NPR yesterday and he was asked about the fact that FCC only censors broadcast media and not cable and satellite radio. Doesn't fix the problem. Check.
Arrogant and secretive. Check.
Hurts American children. Check.
