  1. How could one "back up" their own voice? on Radio Reporter Who Lost Voice Returns To Air Using App Built From Archived Audio (ajc.com) · · Score: 1

Is there any good text to read or corpus of sounds to use to make a recording of ones own voice for such a use in the future? I would be curious what one should record of themselves as a basis for ensuring this could be done for them should something tragic like this happen in the future.

My car has an aux input and I simply plug my iphone into it. I have recently canceled my Sirius subscription because of this. Not to mention the fact that they recently, as a result of the merger got rid of some of my favorite channels that were not mainstream enough. I would say that it is starting to penetrate.

but at least here in Pittsburgh they required that you use the Actiontec routers that they provide if you want to use them for TV.

I don't think this is quite accurate. I had them install mine via CAT5 and as soon as they left I replaced it with my pfSense BSD based firewall and put the Actiontec behind it to feed the guide and VOD data over MOCA to the set top boxes.

There is nothing about XM or Sirius that makes them any more compelling than over-the-air radio if you take college radio into account.
    I'd say that:
    • Uncensored content (getting to hear music with no bleeps, comedians uncut, etc)
    • Driving coast to coast all while listening to the same station
    • Commercial free music
    • Online streams of all the channels
Makes it compelling enough for me.

Great, now they can cap your connection 5 times faster. I downloaded a Suse dvd iso via bittorrent and the next week my outbound connection was capped to barely faster than dial up speed. Then you have to go through this whole game of checking all of your equiptment and connections, etc. Next, you wait to be called by a supervisor who scolds you like a child and tells you that you must be doing something bad like like "sharing files". If you have to upload something, then you should do it in small bursts no longer than 20 minutes long every few hours. When you ask to be upgraded to better service, even willing to pay more money, they don't offer any package and even their business class service won't promise you anything.

I had severe packet loss documented for over 4 months and my connection would come to a crawl. After 3 visits from technisions and 2 visits from field technicians, replacing all my equiptment, and re-wiring all the way up to the next tap, they refused to admit that the node was over-saturated or just plain broken.

I moved to DSL which is signicantly slower but it is much more reliable and at least I know exactly what I am getting for my money.

What good is such promised bandwidth when you have to leave in fear of using it?

  14. MS SQL replication on Can .NET Really Scale? · · Score: 3, Insightful

"I asked a MS SQL Server DBA about real-time replication across multiple servers and his remark was "it doesn't work, don't use it."

We are running transactional replication on several large databases (6-14 GB) on a Media Metrix top 50 website with no problems. It needs to be set correctly (batch size, timeouts, etc) but it does work quite nicely. The DB machine is heavy hardware, but it it able to keep up with 12-15 front end webservers, all with applications hitting the DB.

  15. Nothing but problems for me on IDE RAID Examined · · Score: 1

I've set up an IDE Raid array in my machines three times. The first time with an Adaptec 1200a and two Maxtor DX740's. I assumed that if I striped them I would get a significant performance increase. After running benchmarks with HD Tach and SiSoft before and after I was getting worse performance and high cpu utilization on the striped set than on a single drive. I went through every option with Adaptec Tech Support (which were great) to no avail. I tried the same drives on a Promise Fastrak and got slightly better results but I kept getting write-behind errors and corruption. The only success I've had was using it in a Raid 1 configuration for redundancy. I am definately going to go for a SCSI solution when I get up the extra cash.

I like the concept of ranking pages by the number or pages referring to it. That seems to be the best method of keeping it somewhat difficult to cheat. The only problem is that newer material will take longer to reach the top, regardless of the relevance. It would be nice to have a search engine that could record poeples input regarding the results that were found. How many times have you searched for something only to find the best result buried five pages down. A method to go back and vote the ranking results yourself would seem appealing to me.

  19. I was banned from Napster on Metallica Remains Silent · · Score: 1

Several weeks ago I downloaded a few songs from Napster because I hadn't heard them in years. Ironically enough later that week I bought FOUR of their CD's while standing on line at blockbuster. When I found out I was banned from Napster I was definately outraged, and really don't think I'll be listening to them anymore.

As much as I don't want to steal from an artist, I do spend a great deal of money on music. but paying for $15 for a cd I may listen to twice and the same for one I may listen to 1,000 doesn't make sense. I just think the pricing structure should be changed. In all honesty how much music can one person listen to?(I would like to join a service which gave me any song they carried at any time and they could charge me a monthly music charge with unlimited access. I can only listen to one song at a time anyway. They can keep track of what songs I listen to, and how often, and distribute it to the artists appropriately. The service provider with the best service/price/selection will get my business.

I just wonder how long till this is technically and economically feasable?
