  1. It's a matter of sales on Internet Job Boards a Bunch of Hype? · · Score: 1
What I've found is that if you are looking for a long term position that is local, you will be out of luck using monster, hotjobs, etc.

However, if you are trying to find contract or out of state perm work, monster, hotjobs, etc work well. I usually quote an overly high rate to start with and work from there. I am testing the waters for some short term consulting and it doesn't seem to be too bad compared to the late mid to late eightees. You will need to follow about ten leads before a placement. But what you'll find is that for all the failed interviews, you will still see the same employer looking up to a year later.

Try talking to the headhunters when you are called back for a position that turned you down about a year ago. They are as frustrated as we are with waste of time interviews/leads. However, for a large search area, I have gotten a several offers in the last few months. Some rates were too low to consider but you need to find a desperate employer in this environment to get a good rate. Keep looking even if you find employment in the mean time.

Hang in there and use every resource at your disposal.

Just remember that this is not really about india, america or any other country.

It is about labour arbitrage. Openning many complimentary faciilities in different geo-economic environmets will allow companies to force labour to concede benifits and pay in future negotiations.

In the short term, labour will migrate to india and then from india to russia/china.

In the long term, employers will set different labour pools against eachother

Save that money your spending on SUVs and large housing. You'll need it.

  4. It's about job security on PHBs Getting "Secret" IT Training · · Score: 1

With all the outsourcing and staff trimmings of late, the PHBs are getting nervous. They don't have the staffing stability to guarantee senoir staff positions. Their staff can no longer be taken for granted when troubleshooting and gathering requirements.

If nothing else, PHBs will survive. That is their nature.

  6. Let's create a config database. on Replacing the Aging Init Procedure on Linux · · Score: 1
I've got an idea. We can have a huge file act as a database and programs can 'register' at startup to run various scripts.

Wow, we can even store all configuration information in a non-human readable format!

Then all we need to do is add a default mode to fix problems with this 'registry' and fallback to a backup registry.

Oh wait, someone has already done this and it sucked.

Damn, I guess we can overcomplicate using python. It's just one more scripting language for us all to learn.

    Wooooooo.......Whoooooooo!!!! Another resume bullet point.

Kernel Guys, please make this optional if you every put this in a release kernel. I'll just stick with what works.

  7. Ignoring the BSDs many distributions on CCAGW Misreads Mass. Policy, Open Standards Generally · · Score: 1

Someone had to say it. Also many other operating systems provide source with the right 'insentives'. If I am not mistaken, Qnix has done this in the past among others. Also, most anything that compiles on linux can be moved to most other Posix/*nix systems with some effort. The press release also pushes the Linux vs MS fable. I know most of the shops that I have worked in used multiple OSes from proprietary unixes to linux to MS to VAX to Mainfraimstuff and cp m/. I think they are smoking from the hype pipe. Open standards (not source) and source access are more important than being your vendor's bitch.
