Not that I'm into Manga/Anime, just porn and cartoons, seperately - you know, normal stuff?

DVD-Audio players are required to have analog outputs only, which for multi channel music means you have to run 6 RCA cables (!)

Okay, someone else already covered the benefits of high-res, which is audible.

But the analog outputs are not a restriction due to copyright, but technology. Currently players use SPDIF, or Toslink (optical SPDIF), which is incapable of transmitting the full 192kHz range available on DVD-Audio.

SACD uses DSD encoding, which basically means that no PCM decimation occurs to the signal, and special DSD aware circuitry is needed. Most likely this requires licensing from Sony, and as such we do not see it on all the equipment (like receivers, etc.)

Not everything is a plot to keep you from your music. . .

I agree with the above. Now if someone could just convince Discreet/AutoCAD how much trauma this causes people like me trying to run Educational computer labs.

Either granting special permissions for only one or two software packages, or installing them on alternate partitions/drives just so that they can allow anyone's dog to write to the applications folder is extremely annoying and time consuming.

[RANT ON] My public school system has over 16,000 Discreet licenses, but getting support is like pulling teeth. You would think basic stuff like this wouldn't be so difficult when the organization you work for literally puts hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars into a companies pocket every upgrade cycle. [/RANT OFF]

Just as an aside, my Mac labs have only had one major configuration issue, Managed Users and Classic Access for Quark Express 5. It also requires full write access to the application folder, but since it is our only Classic application, and is installed in a separate app folder than the newer apps, a quick trip in the terminal can resolve that. Let the kids hose classic, especially now that Panther includes distributed system imaging and restoring. Plus with the limited amount of hardware available I can use a single Panther system image for every machine in my lab, from B&W G3's all the way to G5's. The only problem there is the size of the image when the G3's have only a 6 gig drive installed.

Let's see XP/Ghost solutions that are that easy! (Right now I have 4 different configs with their own Ghost images.)

Well, we received another Comcast letter yesterday about our rates going up. I guess the reason Comcast charges frighteningly high rates for their cable modem service ($60+ range for new customers), and digital cable ($70+ for all customers) was their secret plan to capture a rat!

    Who knew?

On a side note, if you don't like your Comcast bills, and you can talk tech talk with regards to money outlay, it is rather easy to get Comcast to give you discounts. Disney can thank me for making it harder for the buyout as I currently am paying less than half of the normal Comcast fees. :)

Or MAP pricing. Apple sets those standards. If you advertise a price below MAP (which on Apple products is ALWAYS retail) you will very likely lose your dealership.

Only the largest distributors ever do this, and it is only by about $5.

Also for many retailers Apple products just don't have a lot of margin, i.e. very little profit, so there just isn't much room for discounting until a product reaches end of life (EOL) and all pricing restrictions are removed.

Actually since Palm Computing broke into PalmSource for Software, and PalmOne for hardware, just Palm is not techinically correct. But Pilot is pretty incorrect also.

The correct terminology is the Palm Computing Platform. That encompasses any device running the Palm OS, including Sony Clie, PalmOne Tungsten and Zire lines, and even old school things like Handera/TRG, and the good old Pilot.

I have been using Vonage for 4 days now, and have absolutely no latency issues. I am also on a Comcast Cable modem. This service is really great IMHO. $25 month gets me all my local calls, plus 500 minutes anywhere in the US and Canada. That cut my bill in 1/2, plus I was already paying for broadband anyway. I was also easily able to adapt my house wiring to go to the Cisco ATA186 so my phone infrastructure didn't really need to change (I have a punch block where the CO lines come in). It sounds just like a POTS connection, with some minor additional noise from time to time. My only complaint is having to dial all 11 digits to call a local number, but I can get used to that pretty quickly.

I totally understand that. However if you re-read my post, I specifically said due to miscomprehension (oh, a specific time . . .), or due to the RIAA not being specific. Yeah, they have lawyers, but they are still a bunch of mooks who don't really understand the technology.

  12. What about the obvious DHCP issue? on Innocent File-Sharers Could Appear Guilty? · · Score: 5, Interesting

When using a modem, or even Cable/DSL one is typically dynamically assigned an address. Many times these can change. It was stated in numerous articles that the RIAA found IP addresses for people, then subpoenaed ISPs for the users using those addresses.

Either due to ISP incomprehension, or RIAA non-specific requests, they most likely received a lot of information based on who was using that address after subpoena, not during copyright infringement.
