You right, I come from a culture, with a good tradition of folk and drinking songs. I plan to keep this culture alive by robbing banks at gun point and humming tunes.
I cut the flesh off of a squirming suffocating animal yesterday. It didn't die until I had sliced most of the flesh from it's sides. Can't wait till I get 30 more and have a fry!
The browser is exactly the same, he didn't lie. But flash still does not work. Of course maybe you would realize flash is not safari, but a safari plugin.
My borther in law uses firefox, thunderbird, openoffice, and gaim (pidgin) as the major apps on his desktop. He does not game, does not use any major windows software. He just built a new computer and bought a license of windows. I asked him why he doesn't switch to linux, he said he is afraid of not having applications he needs and he knows all the apps he likes work on windows.
Also parallels has linux and windows versions of their current products. So it is safe to assume they will have a linux version of this as well. This means cedega faces a new kind of competition. Competition is always a good thing.
My grandma used gentoo for a long time until she bought her new pc. She had an old computer and needed to be able to get on the internet. Windows 98 was just getting destroyed online. So I installed gentoo and gave myself a login. She would call and say she need a program to do X, I'd ssh in, install the program, then put a big icon on her desktop that said "Picture Viewer" or "Mail",etc.
I still do the same thing today with her windows XP machine. I remote desktop in, install what she wants and put a big icon on her desktop that says simply what the program does.
My friends kid's machine uses linux, he has been hunting for something exactly like this, only for linux. It is a shame they have a mac port, but not a linux port.
If there is a linux version of the game, I buy it at release day. If there is only a windows verison, I wait until it hits bargin bin. This way cedega has a better chance of supporting it.
But why, this adds no security, but it does insure that someone can walk up to my console and do something without my password if I forget to close one.
sudo protects me when I"m lazy. NO root without password.
Debian Etch gives you this option to if you do an advanced install. I personally run all my servers now with root disabled, giving sudo access to the people who need it on a restricted basis. Only my account has ALL access.
"Also, if this is the case and apt-get is completely safe to run as admin, why not just set it's SUID/SGID flag and be done with it?"
Simple! I do not want users installing software, I only want me to install software. I do want them to be able to use apt-cache and search for software though. But if they want it installed, they can ask me.
You do not need root access to install software. You need root access to write in any folder you do not have permissions to write into. By default your user can not write in/usr/ thus root access is needed to put files there. You could install apps in/home/user/myapps/blah without root access. However if you want to install apps via apt-get then you need root access because it puts them in/usr/.
This is not a security hole, if you can't trust your repository, then you can't trust the OS, because the repository is the OS. The only way you corrupt your security is if you added a suspect repository. But OS's can't protect you from yourself.
Also windows usually requires admin access to run most apps as well as install them. This is slowly changing, but true for tons of apps.
Here's my reason. I am lazy. Neither windows nor linux can do what I want to do without a lot of effort. I've found many task I want to do in the realms of video and audio editing are just too freaking complicated or expensive to do on windows. And linux makes it even more so complicated. I used to love editing config files and copy and paste in scripts to get my os to work. I thought i was cool. Now I just want my crap to work. I still use linux because I can't afford a mac, but as soon as I get the cash, I'm getting a mac.
Actually, you do not have to wait for portage to get the updates. You can copy the ebuild and the patch to your local directory and digest it then install it. I've done it many a time while waiting for gentoo to update a package I needed.
I recommended iWeb to a friend of mine who had no computer experience to build websites. He was able to make some very nice designs with it in a short period of time, but then after about 4 months, he outgrew it. He wanted to add javascript and flash to his site. It's not that this was impossible, just cumbersome to do with iWeb. You have to save the page, then publish it, then open it up and add your javascript and flash. Then if you want to edit again in iWeb, you have to yet again open it and readd your javascript and flash. He is now looking for a more powerful replacement that works similar.
I stuck in my msdn CD, installed vista buisness, rebooted, everything worked, no need to install any drivers except for nvidia driver for games. I did that (I have a 7900GT 256meg). Logged into Wow, got graphical glitches (tearing, large pillars, etc) I thought it was the game, tried a few others, same issues on any high end game like C&C 3 demo, splinter cell 3, Oblivion, etc. New beta driver fixed some problems, still a ton more left to solve.
Besides video driver issues, and the fact my video card fan now runs with constant noise (due to aero I belive) everything is rock solid.
I still prefer linux however.
I have wow running perfectly on linux, it took me about 5 minutes. Most of it was copying over the patches from my wife's computer. I've used both cedega and wine without issue. I perfer wine, it seems to run a little faster there.
I've also been told it runs in crossover office without issue.
If MS was Apple they would of took IE7, WMP11, and a few patches and sold it for 129.00

So it looks like in that case, it backfired.
Maybe it has something to do with the high end video card and the cool case.
I'd like to be able to put page breaks where I want them. So far this has failed to work for me.

Unless you work in education, or medical in the Midwest. Then it is everywhere, and the pay is nice too.

I work 7:30 to 4:30 my drive was pitch black this morning. I almost fell asleep twice.

What I want to know is where the cedega for mac is at. I mean its an x86 platform now, where is the wine bandwagon.

I wish I had mod points. This is probably the most important point in this thread.

Plus Hillary can't even run her own family. Think of what would happen to this country.
