  1. But it's $6,000 cheaper than a laptop on Psion Is Back :-), With Windows :-( · · Score: 0
    From the article:

The company says it will sell the Netbook for a list price of about $1,500, which is comparable to that of a notebook PC. But it argues that the cost of owning a notebook over its lifetime, including the purchase price, software upgrades, maintenance and repair, can average out to $8,000 per unit, versus an estimated $2,000 per unit for a Netbook Pro unit. And while we're familiar with how notebook PCs get abused and damaged in the course of routine use, that figure seems a bit high by our reckoning.

If you believe this company's RIAA style math, their Psion is only 1/4 the cost of a regular notebook. I guess they might be able to convince a few PHBs with that argument. The only advantage I see to this over a laptop is it would be easier to use on an airplane.

They may want to make there OS as stable as Apple or Linux before they try to advertise it all over the place in television shows.

Notice that none of the shows mentioned are shown live. If they get a BSOD, they just do another take. The viewers never see a Windows crash, no matter how crappy the OS is.

Remember, image is everything, and it's cheaper to make the OS look stable on TV than it is to actually make it stable in real life.

  6. Threats to civilization on Closest Asteroid Yet Flies Past Earth · · Score: 1, Interesting

If this asteroid had hit the Earth, it would have done a great deal of damage and perhaps killed a great many people had it hit a densely populated area.

This illustrates why we need to work on a system to address hazards such as this. Scientists and astronomers have warned for years of the need to be able to defend ourselves, but regrettably nothing substantive has been done about it.

Many people are rightly concerned about spending too much on defense given the current state of the economy. The threat posed by asteroids, however, cannot be ignored. The best way to respond is with a comprehensive missile-defense program.

Some may object, saying that missile defense violates this or that international treaty. However, it's the only way to go. In fact, it wouldn't really cost anything, since we need to build a missile defense shield anyway to protect against attacks from Iran and North Korea. Asteroids are merely another threat that could be neutralized by such a system.
