I don't see mono helping Linux compete with Windows in the server market. Novell will do more for Linux, Sun will do more for Linux, Java will do more for Linux.
Linux is strong in the embeded and server markets, both which are competiting with Microsoft just fine on price value alone. Why do we need to copy everything Microsoft does? Compatibility? Thats the exact same mistake IBM made.
Mono is unless improved on is going to be a waste. Anyone who cares about compatibility with Windows will most likely use Windows and people who care about price will most likely use Linux.

Sun's Linux Desktop is actually catching up to Microsoft in certain countries and even surpassing them. Microsoft is King only in one specific area, the USA PC gaming desktop PC.
For laptops people don't care if it runs Windows,Linux or OSX, For media centers people don't care as long as it works well with their Tivo. For their PDA they just want it to work.
The era of Microsoft is coming to an end, Microsoft knows this, most people on the inside know this. Microsoft simply cannot sell another version of Office and another version of Windows. Most people who use Microsoft office have no reason to buy a new PC. Most people who buy new PC products who arent gamers are doing so to do new things which Longhorn currently is behind Linux at doing, like running servers, or hosting a media center, more sophisticated uses which are appearing now that people have more than one computer in the house.
Oh and by the way, Java is already standard(most widely used) for what mono and.net are aiming for. Looks like Microsoft's enhanced version of Java is too late.

Longhorn will have nothing over Linux, it will almost obviously be less secure than Linux, it will almost for sure have more game and driver support. The last thing I'm sure of is it will cost more.

So even if somehow Longhorn is great software, no one really cares at this point because most of the PC sales are in markets where price is everything and where Microsoft has little to no influence. We need a way to patent the ideas or protect our ideas from being patented.
Otherwise a site like that is useless. Currently it costs too much money to patent anything, so only the rich CEO can afford it.
The US Gov is pro censorship just as much as China. We censor kiddie porn, snuff films, any digital intellectual property.
For us to preech anti censorship we actually need to follow it ourselves in our own country. Look, I'm not for having kiddie porn and snuff films all over the internet, but if we are going to be anti censorship we should start with ourselves.
The problem with the USA and why every country hates us, we never practice what we preech. We are like the pedophile priests who go around telling everyone ot follow the lord when they break all of the rules we tell them to follow.
If we are truely anti censorship would we really have had a fit over Janets breasts? Would we be censoring Howard Stern? Would we be trying to ban kiddie porn, or bomb making / hacking sites?

Karl Marx was right Capitalism does lead to either Communism or Socialism. However if you try to go straight to Communism before building up your society via Capitalism it just won't work. Just like you can't really build up your infastructure for Capitalism without slavery or some type of unpaid or cheap labor.
All of these systems work when applied at the right period in a nations history. When we have enough technology where it makes no sense to compete for things like food, shelter, water, etc thats when Capitalism will cease to work as no ones going to choose to compete when they can live for free off the technology.
Progress leads to technology which leads to higher productivity and this ultimately leads to Socialism. More productive = less labor = less jobs = cheaper products = free products = no need to work.
If we do work, I don't think most people will need to work 40 hours a week. There will eventually be enough people in this country or in this world that there will not be enough jobs for all of us and temp jobs will be the norm.

Freenet runs fine, and Limeware is java too if I remember right, along with lots of other p2p apps
