  1. XFce4 works for me. on Ask Slashdot: Why Aren't You Running KDE? · · Score: 1

I think that KDE is a fine environment, but, I have an older Intel dual core unit with 2 GB RAM and XFce4 meets my needs on Slackware 13.37. If and when I get a new box I will perhaps give the latest incarnation of KDE a try.

  2. Congratulations, Pat:-) on Slackware 13.0 Released · · Score: 1

I've been Slacking since version 10.0, it is my distro of choice. The only other distro I like is FreeBSD, but, I'm exclusively running Slackware now. I downloaded Slackware 13.0 last night and will install today. I'll be heading to the Slackware store later today to buy a DVD. Congratulations to Pat, Robby, Eric, and the entire Slackware team! hitest

  3. Caldera on What Did You Do First With Linux? · · Score: 1

I started with Linux in 2002, my first distro was Caldera Openlinux 2.3, the company that later morphed into SCO:) I then moved to a variety of distros: RH 9--->Debian--->Slackware/FreeBSD. I'm very happy with Slackware; it meets my needs.

  4. Re:Why is it all about teachers? on Teachers Need an Open Source Education · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am an elementary school teacher, I teach a grade 4/5 classroom. I have a small computer lab (20 computers) in my classroom consisting of a mix of Windows, OS X, and Linux. I've built up the lab over the years on spare, throw away computers. At home I run Slackware and FreeBSD. My students are not intimidated by technology and adapt easily to a variety of desktops, OSs. I've run Linux/Unix for 6-7 years; I'm self taught with no formal IT background. Sadly, many of my colleagues do not understand the concept of open source software. This does not, however, make them poor educators. Universities do little to prepare us for implementing technology in the classroom. The adoption of FOSS is an evolutionary process and it will take time. I'm doing my part to spread the word about alternate ways of computing. We need to be patient.

LMAO, funny stuff:-) Congratulations, Mr. V! I've been Slacking since 10.0:-)

  6. Walking on How Do Geeks Exercise? · · Score: 1

I like to eat too much and on occasion consume too many beers. I'm trying to cut down on the amount of calories I ingest, limit my beer intake, and walk or bike 5-6 times per week. It is slowly working, my gut is shrinking:-)

  7. Congratulations, Pat! on Slackware 12.1 Released · · Score: 2, Insightful

Congratulations, Pat! Thanks for your dedication:-) I'll always be a Slacker!

"I remember trying out suse 10.1, and a fresh install was full of bugs. Various suse utilities seemed to break immediately after running update. Have they made much progress towards more stable releases (marketing blurb aside)? Is it worth checking out?" I'll also be very curious to hear if Suse 10.3 is worth a look. I enjoyed Suse 9.3 and !0.0. 10.1 was garbage. Is 10.3 worth a look? I'm now happily using Slackware, Debian and FreeBSD. I'm rather pragmatic in nature. I'll use a distro if it is exceptional.

"I don't know what the answer is because installing an OS, even as streamlined as Microsoft, Apple and the various Linus distributions have done, is still not easy. There are still questions that need to be answered to configure it that I'm certain your grandmother couldn't answer without your guidance."

As a Slackware, Debian user I'll agree that installing my versions of Linux is something that is probably out of the skill set of Joe average computer user. However, Ubuntu is approaching the ease-of-use zone for average users. It is now relatively easy for an average user to set-up up a dual boot with Ubuntu/Windows.
I'm very curious to see what happens with Linux in the next little while.

"So if I were a company evaluating whether to choose Novell over Redhat based solely on the Microsoft deal, I would definitely choose Redhat."
Agreed. I personally don't run RH (I'm a Slackware/Debian user), but if I was choosing Linux for a company I'd go with the industry standard: Red Hat. Interesting to note that RH predicted that Novell would suffer as a result of the deal with MS. I think it is still too early to forecast the demise of Novell, but the survey results are interesting.

  12. perfect distro on Ideal Linux System for Newbies? · · Score: 1

For me the perfect distro is Slackware, Debian, or FreeBSD. If you're new to Linux some good choices are: Ubuntu, Suse, Fedora, or Mandriva. These distros all have great hardware detection and work out of the box.

IMHO IBM will crush the miscreants from SCO. IBM has been fighting these types of stupid legal actions for years. SCO yer toast! hitest
