Here at work we have this HP laser printer that's always complaining about low ink. It just so happens we found an "emergency" option buried in the menus that allows us to keep printing until the toner actually dies.
It's not a Microsoft problem. Rather, it is a cultural problem. Nothing that belongs to corporations is looked upon as "cool," usually because it's something everyone has or uses. People just regard it as a commodity item, and move on. Toyota won't have a cult following like deLorean. Likewise, Microsoft will never enjoy a fanbase like Apple, or Linux.
I feel this first-hand. I'm fascinated with cell phones and the technology behind them, but a seach on any search engine only turns up sales stuff.

To some consumers, yes Microsoftware (boy, I love that) is expensive, but at the enterprise level, it's like shopping at Wal-Mart vs. Gucci.

Because Apple slaps a royalty fee on every Firewire device made. Something to the order of $1 per unit, or so I heard...
