I understand the need for good C/C++ tools to check for memory leaks, performance bottlenecks, profiling, et cetra, but the idea of using garbage collection/memory management libraries in these languages seems a tad silly.
Java has come a long way but there's still a reason Java programmers cost about 60% of the cost of actual C++ programmers (curse them).
Not trying to be a pain, but I don't understand the cost observation. What are you implying? I've been working with Java extensively in my profession and my pay is the same as any programmer with my education and experience. Just curious.
I thought impeachment was just the House of Representatives bringing formal charges against a government official? Similar to an indictment in a trial case. It would take an additional vote by the Senate to establish conviction. Here is the Wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment
It's more complicated than "just" recompiling, but probably not impossibly so. There's not enough PowerPC demand for some organization to do the port and make a profit. If there was a market that could turn a reasonable profit, then it would be done already.
I don't think 75% of Windows users could manage to open up a terminal window and find the value of an environment variable in Linux, but I've been suprised before.
Good info, but I think this brings up an issue with Linux on the desktop. Indeed the home directory is analogous to My Documents in Windows, but it could be anywhere on the file system. (I know it can be anywhere on Windows, but most of the time it will never change for normal users) I guess my point is that Windows is Windows. You can pretty much expect to see the same thing from box to box as far as the OS goes. Linux on the other hand, you never really know what to expect.
Haha, that's funny. Automatic consention on/., that's rich. The View? Is this a show about trying to bring other conservative away from "the dark side"?
When is the My Super Sweet 16 episode airing?! Who will be the totally awesome special guest super star?! Will daddy spring for the 600 baud modem or will be stuck with a measly 200?! OMG I can't wait to ditch my middle income friends for this party.
When your country of origin comes up with a better way of getting information through all those tubes and puts up the majority of the money to make it happen we will make all/. posts your-country-centric.
Now imagine if Verizon FIOS was operated like Verizon Wireless. You would be required to sign a 2 year contract and pay $1000 for a PC that can barely take advantage of the basic features of the service. If you wanted something that could give you the full experience that would be a 2 year contract plus $2000 for equipment.
My dad is a manager at Verizon in the Tampa Bay area. The company has been trying to get their employees on the FIOS bandwagon. He decided he would try the service to save some money on internet service and cable television. After reading through the details he found contractual agreements that made him decide not to use the service. Not only do you have to sign your standard service agreement, but there are some other rather nasty details they don't advertise.
The biggest gripe he had was that Verizon requires you to give up your local phone service (which is through Verizon) and use the FIOS to handle your voice traffic. If you decide that the FIOS service isn't for you, Verizon will not give you local phone service anymore (and there aren't any other options in Hillsborough County). Here in Florida, a POTS line is a nice thing to have with all the power outages during thunderstorms, the occasional tornado, and the hurricanes.
Secondly, you have to have this rather unsightly battery backup system installed on the side of your residence. The responsibiliy to replace the batteries, which only provide backup juice for a few hours and are not rechargable, is up to you. At $40 a pop, its another expense that is not included in the service agreement. The service is also in it's infancy so your usual startup glitches are there, too. One of his coworkers had already signed up and within three weeks became so fed up with no/bad signal that he canceled the service.
I don't know if these issues will be standard across the board for all areas, but they are certainly something to think about if FIOS in your neighborhood is run by a private TELCO.
This thread, and any on global warming, is hilarious, in a bad way. If you believe the "scientists" you are a liberal academian? If you don't believe them you are in denial? WTF is wrong with people these days. Why does everything have to be so damn hyper-partisan. It shouldn't make a freakin' difference what American politcal machinery you are affiliated with.
It doesn't take a stretch of the imagination to conceded that humans could be affecting global temperatures. On that note, it can't be said with great certainty that global temperatures would be any lower if humans never evolved (or were created, whatever; I'm not even going down that path). What we do know that greenhouse gases are being emitted in ever greater quantities and it is overwhelmingly do to human actions. So instead of sticking our collective heads in the sand (looking for more oil to burn), let's do something proactive and fix it as a precaution in case the "liberal academics" weren't actually promoting an agenda.
You won't find (m)any benchmarks showing drastic speed improvements moving from Intel to Athlon 64-bit architecture. If you look purely at how fast does this program X run on these two systems you aren't going to see much. As has been suggested, though, is that AMD systems have a better 64-bit design. The Intel design lacks a true 64-bit IOMMU. This means it cannot use DMA on anything higher than 32-bit address space. Not a big deal unless you have a gigantic amount of memory. The Intel design is closer to 32-bit with 64-bit capabilities, where as the Athlon would be the reverse. Also, most benchmarks I've come across are for Windows apps, but Linux/Unix is where all the real 64-bit progress is being made. What is absent in the whole discussion is SunMicrosystems, which have been making 64-bit chips longer than Intel or Athlon.
I understand the need for good C/C++ tools to check for memory leaks, performance bottlenecks, profiling, et cetra, but the idea of using garbage collection/memory management libraries in these languages seems a tad silly.
I have a far more entertaining idea for spinning silicone. It mostly involves cheesy stage names and tassels.
All my free shit is gone!!! ZOMG!!!

Shhhhhhhhh.....the corn lobby will rip out your innards and make you a scarecrow if you keep talking like that.

Just...wow. What a about the noise of a 1000 kittens farting? How loud are they?
where are the new age boob animation/physics I've been waiting for?

Pfft, your distribution comes with a kernel? =)
Write it in Java.

So now the same cell phone that caused the traffic jam can help me avoid the mess? Brilliant!
I find it very telling that the first /. discussion I open in IE7 was totally garbled and required to reloads to get it looking right.

You sir/maddam, should run for Congress.

If I had mod points, you sir would get +1 interesting.
