  1. Re:Excuse me? on AMD Chip Fraud Delays Release of New Chipset · · Score: 1

I assumed the submitter meant that AMD was going to engineer their chipsets to reject remarked cpus somehow- which would require resources from their engineering dept. Remember, these aren't desktop cpus so accomplishing that may be possible.

  2. This is pretty old news... on Enthusiast Hacks WiFi Into Treo 650 · · Score: 5, Informative

We've been discussing this hack over at treocentral for quite a while now. Shadowmite's most impressive accomplishments are the custom roms he developed, stripping much of the crap out and adding a few critical apps (like notepad and DUN support- so you can use the treo as a modem). It's no secret the 650 has some major memory issues and by flashing his bare bones roms you can get rid of buggy apps like versamail and realplayer and instead run 3rd party apps like snapper mail on your sd card. Shadowmite deserves alot of credit for helping make the treo650 a decent product. -BT

  3. Re:What about JFK Reloaded? on Top 20 Gaming Lows of 2004 · · Score: 1

I agree with you, but for a completely different reason....

This game(I use that term loosely) is utter crap. It only lasts about 20 seconds, there's nothing historical about it (as the dev claims), it's not fun, the graphics suck, it's EXTREMELY buggy, the camera mode is horrible, it's virtually featureless, and it's sorta offensive.

With that said, it got ENORMOUS exposure purely because of it's controversial nature. The low point here is that those phenominal games in the 'Indie Games of the Year'
http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/31/ 2137205&tid=206/ aren't getting a fraction of that kind of exposure.

  4. Major video Flaws in the New Hope DVD on Star Wars DVD Box Set Released · · Score: 1

Well, I noticed at least one. When the gang has left the Death Star and is fighting the 4 Tie Fighters, the Tie Fighters have MAJOR masking flaws. You can see a very visible green box around the fighters in several shots. I don't remember this in the original, and if it was it should have been fixed for this release.

Finally, why is the compression so bad for a 123 minute movie!!!!

  5. the ratings are fine, it's you people! on EPA Fuel Economy Myth: Too High, Too Low? · · Score: 1

My honda insight CVT hybrid gets about the rated mileage(58mpg). Here are some important points:

    I drive conservetively (65-70mph highway)
I overinflate my tires by 5psi
I live in NJ (winters hurt milage badly)
    I drive mostly highway
    I use Mobil1 0w-20 synthetic oil
    I rarely use AC

Now, I averaged over 70mpg (15 mpg over rating) in the southwest so location is a huge factor. If people drive conservively, respect momentum and try to work with it, don't use AC much, keep up with maintanance and live in a warmer climate I'm sure they will get well over the estimated ratings.

With that said, people aren't going to do that and will forever bitch about their car's poor gas consumption.

  6. Should Intel be making mistakes like this? on Intel Recalls New Chipset-Based Motherboards · · Score: 1

Should a company like intel be making mistakes like this? It's truely amazing how this company, which excels in committing monopolistic practices, has virtually unlimited finiacial resources, does not have the fastest x86 processor, does not have the best value x86 processor but is still the hugely dominant market leader.

All they have is the best name recognition- which makes no sense because they habitually relase cpu's/chipsets with major flaws, their P4's(which they said would reach 10ghz) has tapped out, they are struggling(along with the rest of the industry) to get their processor on 90mm process technology... Why do knowlegeable people still buy from them? I'd say because consumers/firms want to standardize on a platform, but Intel is more guilty than anyone in making their hardware platforms incompatible.

  7. I don't get this... on Microsoft Changes Tune Again On SP2 Installs · · Score: 1

Don't most pirates use the winXP keygen anyway? When I bout OEM licenses for XP professional machines I had to use it so it would work with my copy of XPcorp. Hardware changes on my machines quite frequently so I would never dream of using xppro and having to call MS for new key codes.

I'm quite certain i'll have no issues installing SP2. BTW, SP1 has some blacklisted codes (the fckgw one comes to mind) so i'm kinda trying to figure what all the fuss is about.

  8. Here's the best solution to go with... on Large-Scale Paper-To-Digital Conversion? · · Score: 1

I think this guy needs a scanner like the Xerox DocuMate 510. It's only $350 and pretty much does what he needs. At 10 pages per minute it's definately not a speed daemon, but it doesn't really sound like he's going to be scanning 10 of thousands of documents anyway. The only pain is going to be dealing with those multi-sided pages.

I think this scanner plus a summer temp should be enough to get all those prof notes scanned and organized. Definately not an unrealistic request.

  9. SoBe Adrenaline rules on 13 Energy Drinks In 3 Sessions · · Score: 2, Interesting

I experimented with a few energy drinks prior to my trek out to new mexico from new jersey. I found that SoBe Adrenaline worked best for me. I never drink caffine and always get at least 8 hours sleep so I knew this would be system shock. My brother, on the other hand, who has ADD could find nothing that worked.

Just on Adrenaline I made it out there in under 40 hours only stopping for gas/bathroom. Not a huge accomplishment for most, but a triumph for me. When I got to the pan handle I was downing one almost every 30 minutes.

I did try Red Bull and some others on the way back but they didn't have close to the same kick. I really think the effectiveness of these drinks depends on the person.

  10. Re:One thing on Opera Settles $12.75m Lawsuit, But with Whom? · · Score: 1

Well, opera does have the pop-up blocker, and it's super easy to "Turn off Plugins" which will disable those annoying flash adds (I have it set to a shortcut). I turn plugins on when I'm at a site that functionally requires flash. Not sure how mizilla's works, but this solution eliminates like 90% of adds I encounter. You can also turn off animated gifs.

  11. Re:Great on Opera Settles $12.75m Lawsuit, But with Whom? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I use Opera at home and installed firefox on all 50+ of the work machines I administer (because it's free).

I find opera, by far, to be the superior browser for these reasons:

    1. It's faster
    2. It has a much better UI out-of-the-box
    (I mean features, not visuals)
    3. It has a hugely useful hotlist menu
    (file transfers, personal notes, dictionary,
and finally links to newest slashdot articles)
    4. Tabbed browsing is 10x better
    5. User Profiles are organized better
    6. Ultra customizable

I don't find the UI confusing at all. Albeit, I do adjust it to look nothing like the default settings. Version 7.5 is very stable, unlike some of the earlier builds and site compatibility is as good as firefox.

Bottom line is, you start depending on the features unique to opera and you WILL become dependant on the browser.
