"What the public wants in desktops is shown by what they buy in the Windows world--a reasonably priced box (color irrelevant) with modest features but easily customized to suit."
What they want? Or, what they've been told they want and need in order to be "compatible"? I believe you give the buying public way too much credit.
I'm not sure anyone is saying that the slashing price of music downloads is a bad thing. You obviously haven't got a clue about this, so why do you comment?
Whatever, dude! Real can't support those low prices for long. I'm sure they're taking a heavy loss on that. Then what?
My guess is that most iPod owners are perfectly content buying from the iTMS since it is the only one that works seamlessly with the iPod. Plus they're nearly have twice the content of Real's offering.
"Keeping a business like Apple alive simply by running a "music" store seems like a flawed way of operating a hardware/operating system business." Save your money and buy a clue!
Well, the key word here is "if". As in, "if Dell had". Well, Dell didn't and wouldn't, because, as we all know, Dell has absolutely no design sense whatsoever.
Geez. Give it a rest already.
Oh wait, I got one. Linux is a ripoff of Unix!
Sort of like your post.
Obviously, you are not familiar with Apple's excellence in industrial design. You won't need an optional nut and bolt.

How many times have we heard that one? The only problem is, bob670, nothing is equal to or better. Not even this ugly new thing.
Give it up already! The iPod is cultural phenomenon. Nothing Rio or anybody else does is going to change that.
WTF? It IS ugly. Open your eyes, man!
The very reason Windows is, as you say, THE OS is because of attitudes like yours.
I guess it depends on your definition of failure. Just because a product isn't popular (Cube, etc.) does not mean it's crappy. Get a clue, please.
Yep! It is all Clinton's fault.
Hey, Performer Guy (wow, what a cool name...not) are you clueless or what? There is absolutely no vendor lock-in associated with the iPod.
Wow. You're a genuis.

Wow, how profound!
What a ridiculous assumption.
I believe you are correct. It is about QuickTime.

I've got a better idea. Why don't smartasses like you develop your own digital music system. Then, you can do what you want with it.
Hmmm. Must be a Real employee. The iPod/iTMS combo is sooo smooth, why do we need Real?
He writes better than you do.
I think it was an SGI machine in Jurassic Park

Me too!
Don't you know any other tune?
