What is Java GUI????? Something like Linux GUI, or Windows GUI??!?!?
We all know that Swing is slow and does not comply to common HIG. But there is also swt, and anyone saying JAVA is slow, just shows he doesn't know what he is talking about.
But this undermines your freedom of doing whatever you like. If you install a shareware with spyware attached, and they inform you with the EULA, it is your own freedom to do so. In fact "You wanted the Software".
Do you _really_ know how much effort you have to take to keep an XP-Installation clean? That means that _only_ IT controlls the machine, and not claria, ms or doubleclick.
There is a bunch of crappy software you have to use. Anti-Virus, anti-spyware,personal-crap-firewall and so on.
Just _one_ of the recent Anti-Virus Kids _double_ your startup time and _double_ the workload on the machine. In fact it is _impossible_ to develop on such machines. Just when it gets to all the ports this auto-update crap needs to keep the clicky-fucky crap up to date it gets ridiculous!!!
The only way is to turn that fuck of completely. Switch to more reasonable Software and do what you are paid for.
point 1 is valid. but not to forget that we talk about software you eventually don't even need, but get anyway (like the rest of the crap in xp)
2. just a waste of hdd space. that's all. the user musn't muck up his system! how's that gonna fit to point 7??!?!

in fact XP ist just a 2k with a lot of crap and shit and useless -and dangerous- stuff (like the desktop firewall).
there is in fact a reason why people ask why they should switch anyways. Additionally you have to mention that windows 2000 knows directX too.
In the last months i had several Situations where to decide which distri to take.
In a larger project i was at, we took sles8 and rhel. There had to be setup several small machines with "standard installation". Allthough we didn't need X or such, the machines where full with unneeded software. And the packages we really worked with had to be built by ourself anyway because the pre-packaged versions where fairly old.
So where is the clue now?
I get Distributions rather inflexible with no packet management at all (as mandrake or debian) and too old Software so i have to build and package it myself anyways.... If you start to build your own stuff, you fall out of the supporters update cycle anyhow, so what is the right descision here?
Next Project i had was getting smb-Servers to authenticate to an ADS Domain. I needed a very recent version of samba/winbind/kerberos so i took a sarge hoping it will be declared "stable" somehwen in the next few months.
I hope you get the problem;)

First do not forget Software is used by _many_ more people than it is written by. And second the Software with the most users is often the one with the most developers attached.
Think about it.
this discussion is getting soooo boring.
first of all. When talking about software installation in linux. I exclude all distributions that do not have a built-in default packaging system with huge online repositories.
reason is simple. Without this system you never get the job done. Wether you want to install "stable" software, or install new software, or want to install dev packages for compiling software, there is no way to get the job done without these systems.
So two distributions drop. Suse, fedora -> bye bye.
Even if they do have uprmi now. It doesn't mean someones gonna take care about the server side, which means fewer people will install it, which means fewer people take care on the server side.....this will never change if a distro does not make it mandatory.
and i can hear the people saying "but you may do this and that". i will tell you something. Visit your suse or fedora neighbour and look how he is handling his software. You can see his blinking eyes when ne suse boxes show up....
this is reality, not some sort of theory-discussion.
Now to the terribly broken packages in debian and co.
I had a problem last week. My Lotus notes didn't work because i was using a bleeding edge version of wine. so ?
I took the version from the stable repos and my problems where solved (mandrake here). I don't get the problem here. You say there are (in your opinion) terribly broken Packages which makes your point refusing _any_ packaging system ? ok, i had to look for "libwine" and "wine". And nobody's gonna tell you you need both if you don't know yourself. This is a flaw. Yes. But for gods sake, it's no reason to fall back into manually installation (as in suse). And in fact it is not that bad as you describe it. Most of the packages i came accross where packaged quite ok. And the two or three not so ok, does not make urpmi and/or apt way ahead of even windows software installation.

it may be offtopic, but in europe xbox1 gets modded a lot. And IMHO it's about 5% modding it for playing "pirated games".
Again: In general you mod xbox'es _not_ for playing pirated games.
You mod it for this:

and for this
