You obviously have no idea what you are talking about...
What's the largest code base you've worked on? Ever deployed to 200 servers? 80,000 simultaneous users.... I'm guessing no... and since, traffic wise, Everquest is nearly 1/4 of Yahoo's traffic (and the game logic is much more complicated then a web server) its quite a feat...
And there is no such thing as bugless code. What there is though is the complexity of windows and the relative simplicity of a unix build built to match requirements.
blatant MS loving is as pointless and uneducated as blatant MS bashing...
I'm not at liberty to say how I know this but this is what I know of Everquest (the most popural MMORPG):
They used NT and C (Asm too?) to develop Everquest and they are paying for it dearly.
Everquest has had up to 80,000 simultaneos users which were distributed over 200 NT servers.
These servers are in two locations and they have two FULL TIME employees who walk around all day -- their sole job.... reseting crashed NT servers.... yes, that's right. full time server reset people...
In addition, they've had nightmare situations with patching and keeping these systems up to date.
And another thing I know is that their next game (forget the name) they have started nearly from scratch and are developing on a UNIX derivative (may be linux... not sure) mainly because the costs of running the game on NT are too great...
How did this post make it on slashdot? Ok, 200 bytes compressed to 2 bytes and several bits. Anyone who has studied information theory would know that if you can compress it to x bits then it only has x bits of information... Therefore the 200*8 bits used in XML only contain 2*8+? bits of information.
Perhaps this compression is of just some headers needed? But there is no way to compress data that much. And also, the point of XML is that it is a text protocol so that it is human readable. THere are already protocols available for binary compression of XML data. This is not an example of some algorithm from the past coming to the rescue and blowing today's technology away.
This is a concocted, special case example meant to trick idiots that believe it.
PS2 Computer would never work -- Here's why

That would never work because Sony sells the PS2's for a loss which means that if people stopped by games for them Sony would eventually go out of business.
I attend MIT and I can attest that there are many negative feelings towards Microsoft's encroachment (btw: there is an anti-MS rave tonight... who knows... maybe they will be handing out X11 pills?)... however, $25 mil is $25 mil, even if the person giving it away writes shitty software. One thing that won't fly is any requirement that we start using their software...
you are comical

learn from experience...
You shouldn't report news on slashdot because 1) that's not the purpose and 2) you often get it wrong and spread misinformation.
You can argue that the news sites are down, but that's better than spreading misinformation.
