  2. Re:Business or Personal? on What Do You Charge for Tech Support? · · Score: 1

I never charge friends or family, and in fact usually enjoy helping them out, since even reformatting is usually only a couple hours work. However, if they offer compensation I am not going to turn it down. Usually with my friends this comes in the form of other favors such as transportation or food, especially pizza which at College pizza is practically as good as currency. Since a good portion (roughly half) of my friends are also techies anyway, this is not too much work, and when I do help out a friend I use the oppertunity to educate them (none of my fiends use IE any more, for example). As a result I rarely see the same problem twice with the same person. YYMV, of course, depending on who your friends are.

Friends of friends, on the other hand, are a different matter. Simple verbal advice is almost always given freely, but when they want someone to come over and help, I usually refer them to someone/company who does charge for their time. There are a few exceptions to this of course, especially if the person is female and attractive.

There's no such thing as a not slow day here in Maine. I've lived here my whole life and quite often something like a lethal car accident will be headline news across several counties because nothing else ever happens.

Yeah I think this article is absolute crap. The information on my school (University of Maine, which despite being in the middle of nowhere, is a decent engineering school) has a couple of inaccuracies. The first being that we most definitly do get web space, and quite a lot of space at that. We also do have a computer ethics policy, and I am positive we have more computers than 520. Those things would put this school just outside the top 25. I think most likely wherever they got this info from is really really out of date.

Also, I wonder do they take into account how much of the campus is covered by the wireless network? 100% of all non-dorm buildings on this campus have wireless net access, but does that count any more than a school with only a few buildings covered? It doesn't say.

I wouldn't exactly call it a bad imitation of MS Office. For light Word, Excel or Powerpoint usage, most users in my experience can barely tell the difference. And light usage (an occasional report, paper or presentation) is exactly what most people use an Office suite for. I've converted my entire family and most of my non-geeky friends from MS Office to OO.o, and not one of them has had a single complaint.

Because you have to install something like 15 extensions in Firefox to make it as functional as Opera? And reinstall them after every minor Firefox update, that is after you wait for them to be updated to work with the new version. Not to mention that I have had extensions break Firefox. And yet the download for the (non-Java) Opera is a full 1.1MB smaller.

But after 1.0 is actually released, I will switch back to firefox, at least on a trial basis, simply on the principle that it is free and open source.

  12. Re:bans on Cellphones Usable on Airplanes in 2006? · · Score: 1

Cell phones are banned while in the air because communicating with that many towers in so little time can really mess things up. The picocells should take care of that.

Cell phones and other devices are not allowed during take off and landing because they could theoretically interfere with some important electrical signal. It's not such a big deal if one instrument in the cockpit goes haywire for a few seconds while cruising, but i wouldn't want that happening while taking off, or especially while landing. I don't think this has actually been proven, but shutting off your phone during landing is a minor annoyance, and better safe than sorry.
