Except we're not talking about copying bits, we're talking about copying a piece of music or movie. There's nothing immoral about chemically propelling a small hunk of lead really fast either, but if you propel it AT someone, things change rather quickly. Context is key - but by all means, don't let me stop you from trying to justify infringement.

PS. The speed of light is a fact, and as such, isn't subject to copyright or trademark.

Instead of writing pages of snide remarks, perhaps you could admit that while this won't turn a programmer into a graphic artist, it might help the programmer avoid some glaring (and apparently common) blunders. It's not about making programmers create award-winning design, it's about making programmers think about design as a necessary element to a project and giving them a concise set of guidelines to follow to avoid bad design.

Apple also likely knew that any claim Cisco had on the trademark would be tenuous, at best. They also have this other product with a "i" prefix - maybe you've heard of it - so perhaps they wanted to associate their new iPhone with the strongly established iPod brand. Do you really think Apple needed to resort to a trademark dispute to drum up interest???

I really hate to break it to you, but the number of people like Paris Hilton (mentally, if not financially) vastly outnumbers the number of people like you, who demand the ability to install any random piece of third party software on their phone. The only limitation I see to the iPhone being a runaway success is the price - and I'm not even sure that will slow it down by much.

No, Microsoft knows how to cram a bunch of features into a product and tout that as an improvement. More features does not necessarily equate to a better product. FM radio? Really, is that a feature that the portable music player market has been demanding? Furthermore, I'd expect the Zune's ability to share music (but only for 3 days) to frustrate and alienate more average users than excite them. Please don't make the same mistake that a lot of other /.ers do and assume that because you want it, the rest of the target market must want it.

You mean, tell that to anyone like me? I'm running 10.4 on a 400mhz G4 which I bought in '98, 768MB ram, which originally came with OS 8 (8.6 I believe?). 10.1 was moderately sluggish at times. Each new version since has brought noticeable speed improvements. Upgrading from OS 9 to any version of OS X other than 10.1 isn't "painful" as you describe, and with recent releases is actually plenty fast enough for home use*.

I'm going to pick on you a little bit since yours is the first post I've read mentioning battery life. Why is that such a big deal? I could understand if you were literally going to be on the phone all day, but assuming you'd have a more normal usage pattern, why is it so difficult to drop a phone into a dock (which they mentioned the iPhone will have) or plug in a charger when you get home at the end of the day? Sure, longer battery life is always nice, and I don't always remember to keep my phone charged either, but is having to plug in a cord once a day really such a hassle? :)

A more important issue to me would be, does the iPhone have an "offline" mode that turns off the phone while still letting you use the iPod, say, on a plane?
