I'm not a software dev but is it common for people to develop on a platform different than the one they are developing for? Common sense to me says it would be a PITA as far as testing etc but like I said, I don't do it so what do I know.

While this used to work many moons ago for most positions now, no way. To combat this exact behavior a company I recently interviewed with had two different system engineers grill me followed by the a director. They were very prepared and all asked different questions. Unless you KNOW you can fake it, don't.

While saying any business that wants to use a *nix goes with Linux might be a nice dream, it's not the reality. Many IT shops are going to buy their *nix with the hardware from a sole supplier. I have plenty of *nix here but not a drop of Linux. What is really nice is that a lot of these tradtional vendors are starting to install Linux on their hardware. It's a great inroad into these shops but old stodgey IT Managers are going to stay with something old, troed, and true like AIX, HP-UX, or Solaris.

I think them trying to soak the max out of everything isin't so much greed as they have no idea how to make money anymore so they insist on leeching every idea that they don't come up with right now. I still believe that if they provided the delivery means that the consumer wants and a product that they actually want, we wouldn't have to deal with this crap every 6 months.

Another way they have driven them away, at least in my metro area, is one chain has been building large super stores and closing their local smaller stores. For me parking in my neighborhood is next to impossible at any time of day so having to drive to one of these larger stores begs me to find another option. If it's not easy to walk to then delivery, Peapod is rampant here, is a wonderful option.

I was thinking the same exact thing actually. The drive seems to be towards another monoculture. I have to question how one or another can possibly be any better. Though I am sure companies who are seeking to sell IT as a service, such as IBM, would love to see an OSS future. With developers being a less than autonomous group and direct support being hit or miss for their product it would generate an enormous marketplace for service/support providers, implementers, etc.

I don't think it's any of IBM's concern what YOU do with your data, YOUR backup policy, or how difficult it is for YOU to configure your drive with what YOU want on it. They would offer a replacement, take it or leave it.

Point being that you have only taken into account yourself, not the millions who are affected by such a recall. And let's be honest, any corp really doesn't care how they affect one person. It's a matter of numbers. If you were the only one with a drive issue this may be a little different as there wouldn't even be a recall to comment about.
