  1. Re:Phantom Console? on Warshaw Awards Celebrate 2003's Gaming Missteps · · Score: 0

The more that comes out about it, the more it looks real. Big sites and mags have been interviewing the creators (forgot the name), and it seems it might not be an investor scam after all.

Personally, I believe that the developers are sincere in there hopes. Unfortunately, the idea of the console is pretty worthless. It will never reach production, much less make it off the ground.

When your overhead will be outrageous, and you main demographic is used to bootlegging all of their games, there's no way to win.

  2. Re:Why an iPod? Seriously on Christmas Gifts for Geeks · · Score: 0

I've been doing some research on which MP3 player to get this holiday season (last year's MP3 CD player's skipping is driving me crazy). I've looked at the various Archos (RockBox is very cool), iPod, and Rio players; with cost as a key issue. I've decided that, for the price, the Rio Riot is the way to go. I intend to get one for under $100 on eBay. I've been monitoring the prices for the other players (20GB models, when applicable) and I doubt I could get one for under $150. Allot of people complain about its battery problems, but those seemed to be fixed with recent firmware updates. It also has some great options for sorting and making playlists. You can view songs by artist, album etc., as well as have it dig up your neglected tracks, and other things like that. That's a great feature in my mind, and outweighs the players size differential when compared to the iPod. The biggest problem I expect to run into is transferring 10GB+ of WMAs over to it, which I will do as soon as I get it. Since it uses USB (as opposed to firewire), I'll have to let it do so overnight. Not a big deal, because it IS easy to just let it sit while you sleep. I suppose it might be a problem if you want to quickly add an album to your library or something, but I doubt I will run into that. Regardless of price, I think I'd take the Rio Riot (or Karma, and especially a few of the Archose models) over the iPod. Besides design, it's really not that great...

  4. Re:The Geek Xmas Connundrum on Emachines 64-bit Athlons Now On Sale · · Score: 0

I like eMachines, as well. I have one (too lazy to check the exact model) that came with a 2gig P4, at a price $400 less than the only other 2gig in the store. Granted, I had to replace it's vid card, RAM, and add a DVD drive. Then again, it came with a respectable monitor and speakers, which the other didn't. Still, it ended up being several hundred less, and a better PC than the expensive rival (which I also don't remember the model of) in the end. For those of us too lazy, or too uneducated, to build a PC, eMachines are a great deal. I've had to use their tech support a few times, and they've been very helpful, even when it was out of warranty. I can't say that about other manufacturers I've had to deal with (namely ::shudder:: Dell).

I agree with what a bunch of you have said. Computers are valuable educational tools that can even save money in the long run. They can teach things traditional educational tools (books, experiments, what have you) never could. Of course, having more teachers will help even more. If the government is going to grant money to a school disctrict that can't afford to keep its staff, it should go towards rehiring. We shouldn't dismiss modern teaching aids, but we shouldn't forget about standard ones either.

  7. Re:Windows in Movies ?? on Linux in Movies? · · Score: 1

The movie being fresh in my mind (I was talking about it with someone today, as it was parodied is SM3), the Ring showed Windows. I don't remember it ALL that clearly, but I believe the girl (main character) was surfing the web for information on... something. Anyway, she was using IE, and what looked to be Windows 95 (could have been later, but didn't look to be higher than 2000). I remember this scene in particular because she happened to have opened a web page on her hard drive, not the internet. The adress bar (IE) showed an adress on the C drive... I can't imagine a problem easier to erradicate before shooting...
