    At least that Jamie Zawinski ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Zawinski ), heavily involved in Netscape/Mozilla during early years, seems to agree...

    Well, while I disagree with you when it comes to personall preference (I find trackpoint much better than trackpad or small trackball of past laptops - though Logitech Marble Mouse is really nice IMHO), we can certainly both say that its frustrating nobody gives us a choice...especially since miniature trackpads those minilaptops have are sub-optimal even for people used to trackpads...

    At this point I think I'll have to hunt for some old X series Thinkpad... :/

    Even though their survival depends solely on our good will.

    Somehow I find this to be symptomatic of whole humanity. And I don't doubt even for a second that we, supposedly "civilised" people, would do the same in similar situation...

    The way I see it: paraphrasing you, distributed operating system should concentrate on providing EVEN MORE abstract interfaces to hardware.

    As in...I don't really care where the hardware/neccesary horsepower/storage that I have are, I just acces them from any device.

    I didn't really mean syntetic tests...all major browsers can comfortably handle, even when running on 5 year old computer (as I'm doing now), practically every webpage (minus those that, as I mentioned, still hold on to "works best in..." mentality).

    There ARE huge differences when one pushes limits, for example, having 259 pages opened (as I'm doing now) in a browser that has been running for two weeks. No other browser than Opera is even CAPABLE of handling that gracefully (Seamonkey comes close) on this hardware. For me that tells how efficient/fast/well coded Opera is.

    Perhaps you should ask other way around...why people in many places don't care about flaws of FF?

    Because in this ex Warsaw packt country of mine Opera popularity is on par with Firefox...might have something to do with how well it performs on slower machines, for example.

    I should know better than answering to AC, but...I'm sorry, what?!

    Opera is, and always been so much faster than Firefox (which is actually beaten by Seamonkey in that regard...) it is absurd.

    The only two explanations:

    a) something is messed up in your system in a way that affects Opera but doesn't affect Firefox

    b) sites you frequently visit are holding on to "best viewed in IE" mentality (only now it's replaced by "...in IE & Firefox"... :/ )

    That's more or less my point - not everywhere fast GFX matters, and Nvidia _does_ have integrated GFX chipsets with "performance doesn't matter" mindset (just few months ago I built for somebody PC on the cheap (vey cheap) based on GF 6100 chipset)

    But OEMs that build cheap laptops supposedly want not only that, they want integrated package, with everything (not only chipset/chips but also CPU) included in one nicely tested/supported solution.

    The whole point - I wonder/suspect that Isaiah and its refinements would be good to fill this need.

    I'm thinking more about cheap 15,4" "desktop replacement" laptops with pathetic/"doesn't matter" battery life that, from what I see everywhere, dominate the sales

    (nvm that I absolutelly hate them - I prefer something more portable, but economy of scale doesn't work for my advantage)

    There are other ways than acces to source code to discover that app is doing something suspicious...and I imagine some number of people keep an eye on what uTorrent is doing, considering how popular it is and so on...

    As for the rest of your post...well, let us just agree to admit that we have different approach to minimalism ;P (in my case it's efficiency of apps and how well they behave that matters - but I don't mind if that involves registry (as long as usage of it is well behaved...))

    PS. Why you're not on Linux if FOSS is so important? Occasional game without willing to restart? (as is in my case, usually due to p2p running in the background and Opera with hundred or two tabs open; reopening would take way too long for my liking). Skype for Linux can now do basically all of what Windows version can, and on Linux you have probably the lightest & most efficient bt client http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RTorrent

    I wuldn't know; yeah, TBH I haven't actually tried it, I'm just aware of its exisrence "just in case" (as I wrote I see no reason to be unhappy with uTorrent...for now (although latest beta seems to eb taking it in the wrong direction IMHO))

    Nvidia doesn't target solely gamers, otherwise GF 6100/6200/7300/7600/8200/8300/8500 wouldn't be available at the moment. Add to that that possibly the most profitable market segment now consists of cheap laptops, where it's certainly better to have full platform available to OEMs.

    suggest that Isaiah, when it comes to performance per clock, is finally comparable with AMD/Intel. Who knows what we'll see later...

    PS. Games are _the_ only thing (and not that many people play them...) now for which you'd need faster CPU than cheapest one...plus it's still better to have slower CPU/faster GPU than other way around.

    I was wondering about this...now that nVidia wants CPU to loose its importance _and_ they started to cooparate with Via on chipsets for Via CPUs (which perhaps aren't the fastest...but I've hard the latest Isaiah core is quite capable), will we see some kind of merge?

    But I'm not sure why you're so opposed to the idea of using closed source software on...Windows. Especially if uTorrent is extremelly good software (and I think we'd hear by now/somebody would discover it if its closed nature and deal of Bittorent would pose any threat to users)

    BTW, seeing as you greatly prefer light software I'd suggest Opera instead of Firefox/Thunderbird, Abiword/Gnumeric instead of OpenOffice, Miranda instead of Pidgin and smplayer instead of VLC ;P

    ...because it seems it definatelly can be used as laptop, thanks to dual touchscreens. (and calling it E-Book reader...hm, I think we settled what that term means and XO-2 isn't exactly it...)

    I wonder what OS will be there...

    Well, I can't read TFA ATM (limited connection via mobile), but the idea behind claymore mine is more about "sinlge use big ass shotgun" than explosives per se.
