Hmm...there is already a browser behaving like that... (but it's not/. darling so no point in mentioning it...)
And while I agree about VMs, gaming and video (those cases basically can take any horsepower thrown at them for forseable future)...
- audio, on consumer level, already has more than enough CPU power
- emulators...hm, on one hand some of them will also take any CPU power thrown at them (MAME). One the other...I notice that in case of many lack of CPU power isn't the biggest problem (PS2 emulation)
The problem with your vision is that as CPUs will get faster, new features/sloppy coding will probably keep the interactivity of UI at the same level...
Ahhh, but OP was talking about consumers beeing mislead, and the types of apps they use aren't CPU limited at all (or rather...they often are, but there's no apparent reason why they should get away with it:/ )
And especially POV-Ray is out of the question here...not only niche software, but also one of few niches that DO consume any amount of CPU power thrown at them.
PS. Really, I dislike the type of sentiment you seem to present, to some degree. Number crunching and updating that don't bog down the machine are possible on single core, I experienced it; we don't need to excuse devs who can't do that/throw them a bone by using more and more cores.
Well, that's why you're supposed to choose PROPERLY CODED PROGRAMS. Yes, we can excuse average consumer (notice I didn't say "user"), but people on/.?
How is that my computer is the most snappy I've ever got my hands on, even if it's only Athlon XP 1700+? Could it be because I choose what I use carefully, and all dual cpu machines I've used had tons of bloatware? Just wonderin'...
Oh, and somehow I even get better funcionality...
PS. Seriously, you can't do anything while antivir is updating? What kind of bloatware are you using, I usually just see "virus database updated"...
PPS. And note that I'm not some sort of "anti-upgrade nazi", just..."anti-pointless-upgrade nazi";P That said, I have to upgrade really soon - I believe right now I see one of the last motherboards with 4 PCI slots available, and I'd like to use my PCI cards (yeah, that "anti-pointless-upgrade" thing) plus beeing able in the future to easily add HDD space and GFX card. Oh, modernisation includes cheapest dualcore CPU that fits into the mobo. WHy dual you ask? Well, at 40 it's marginally more expensive that cheapest singlecore.
I wonder how snappy my computer will be now... (yeah, I'm not planning to change my software habits)
Nice GUI, both for Win and Linux, has similar concept to VLC with "all playing" (it's basically frontend to mplayer engine) but it's more simplistic and seems done better generally.
Oh, and insanelly low resource consuption on my Athlon XP 1700+...I thought such low CPU usage on this machine was only possible with playing music files.
You don't even have to release bombs strictly above the target to be accurate anymore... And actually, I checked, and there's nice photo on Wiki of F-22 releasing bomb at supersonic speed.
And while perhaps current cruise missiles aren't adapted to such launch...I don't see there's anything that makes it fundamentally impossible.
Like Chris Burke, I'm also glad to be of service. The only contact with "real" SciFi prior (and since) watching Blad Runner was Ubik in my early teens. Granted, I might be an anomaly since I didn't have much problems in fallowing this one too...
But I'm definatelly no big SciFi fan (well, I do like BSG and some Star Trek episodes, but that's not true SciFi apparently; oh, I wasn't even able to watch from beginning till the end any of Star Wars movies;) ) And I absolutelly love Blade Runner. No problem following DC. Actually it was kinda obvious that Deckard wasn't human even a bit before the ending scene. And I've never even watched theatrical release (actually I find the whole idea of voiceovers a bit...insulting)
I wonder why would you do that, if you havne't even noticed;)
On a more serious note - that's actually good news to me, I prefer lower speed and longer battery life (I wonder if it's possible to underclock it further to some ridiculously low FSB speeds...).
OTOH Asus made a big marketing mistake, in my case - even before release of Eee they announced second, much better for me model (lower power consumption, longer battery life, no fan...no moving parts at all)
I can think of a few programs (won't mention them by name, they're pet-peeves of many users here...) that feel slow now matter how fast the machine is.
OTOH I use few equivalents which feel much faster even on 5 year old machine...and it would seem that recognising good coding and NOT having to upgrade your machine constantly is quite easy...
It's a bit fascinating how you blow this totally out of proportion... (and YOU again menage, by your standards, to be insulting while trying to prove me not only that I should say something but now that I don't know what I wrote...nevermind the thief analogy (prove to whom? If to me...I wouldn't care if you're right. Rest of/.? They don't care. To you? Perhaps, I don't see why anybody would waste their time for posts like above; at the least don't rationalise everything you see/read trying possibly to convince yourself that the world is just))
Why is it that you so care when the poster didn't about specifics of my first post. Which might have been rather harsch (probably influenced by my irritaion on the state of discussion on "Steam Survey", check my comment to see what I mean...), but again so what, everybody got over it (I believe I wrote good reasons as to "why" in previous post). Well, almost...
I can deal with beeing wrong - sure, I was when it comes to some _insignificant_ details.
However where do you get an idea that I should say "sorry"? There's so many things wrong with this expectation...like I don't actually feel sorry; somebody who calls me insulting repeatedly wants to force me into certain state of mind that matches their expectations; if the initiall things I've said (on an internet discussion forum, no less) are so hard to swallow I'm not sure how anybody could get by in real life...the list goes on.
It's nice for you that you get your "laptop" with specs close to desktop, but where can I get reasonably proced one with ~1GHz of cpu power, rather on the small side (but with comfortable keyboard...say, 13 - 14"), and at least with 12 hours of battery usage?
The whole point of mobile phone is to get reception EVERYWHERE. It's not like in US, where it's sensible to evaluate which operator/network type has range in places often visited by you. Here, if you don't want to be confined to few major cities, you choose any of 3 GSM based operators. So my point still stands; as only GSM is really useable, my country are purely GSM.
Don't spin this other way around; you don't even know that TPSA is NOT a mobile phone operator, and their coverage (ok, so it seems not only one city...few?) is rather pathetic...
Really, cities aren't everything. I don't know the reason why you don't see this (is coverage in US that poor?)...I've had GSM reception EVERYWHERE here for quite a few years. And that should matter to you if you value your customers.
And BTW, every operator I know supports call forwarding, for which you pay. I suspect your customers would be happy if they could get to you cheaper, with much greater probability of you beeing in range. And you would have to carry only one, GSM, phone.
Opera also has "flash default off, turn on for specific sites like youtube", you just need to enable plugins in site preferences.
Hm, renifeers could actually be confused with that...
Santa?...

I believe there's even some "law" for that

It's a bit amusing that most of those are sort of Windows problems :p

It DOES make tabbed browsing a more pleasant experience, at least in Opera.
Maybe SMPlayer is for you?

Concorde, Tu-144 - both around 2.0 on supercruise.
Hmm, F-22 isn't even the first fighter in service capable of supercruise.
And let us not forget Concorde and Tu-144...supercruise in the mach 2.0 range.
You don't even have to release bombs strictly above the target to be accurate anymore...

Supersonic != magic...

But for Google Earth, not Google Maps:

BTW Lenovo and Linux...what's their policy on giving you back MS-tax once you return copy of Windows?

Wait, would that mean you're a cockroach?
/. as it gets?)
(hmm...as close to safely call somebody "cock" on

Things I want simply aren't available.
