Duke Nukem Forever Teaser Released
smithtuna33 writes "As of today there is a teaser up for Duke Nukem Forever at 3dRealms. It's up on Youtube as well, since the site is already slow. Not much actual game-play, but still ... might this game actually see the light of day after so much talk?" 1up, GameTrailers, and Voodoo Extreme have it too.
LIES!
Does anybody still care about that game?
Now if only there were an actual GAME to go along with it. Maybe they can cobble together a direct-to-DVD movie instead?
...Four horse-like aircraft seen flying across night sky.
If they actually release the game how can I continue to classify certain projects at work as 'Duke Nukem Forever' priority!!

Seeing the words 'Duke Nukem Forever' and 'released' in the same sentence almost made me choke on my toast. Next time, try to break the news lightly or you may end up with a slightly reduced readership.
Extremely low temperatures have been reported in hell today. If the drop continues hell is actually in danger of freezing over...
yeah
:D
but... wait this is just a video!!
wait until 1st april to the release
That trailer on YouTube was horrible!
They're totally boned.
This isnt the first trailer for the game, and in comparison, the first trailer back in 2001 was MUCH better.
"Slashdot, where telling the truth is overrated but lying is insightful."
Is it April 1st already?
This is all just CGI. I didn't see anything in that badly edited cutscene that even remotely looked like in game footage. Plus, Duke looked stupid.
We STILL haven't got anything to show you. So we slipped a CGI artist a few hundred to knock up something very contrived and put a bad voice actor (who doesn't sound like the original Duke) over the last few seconds of the vid. We can't show gameplay, cos there isn't any. We can't show anything "new", cos there isn't anything. We can't even "hint" at what's coming, cos there's nothing. But if we release a trailer of CGI we'll still keep the Duke name going and make it look like we're actually doing some work on the game.
Not only nothing to see, but yet another nail in the Duke coffin. Just cancel the game, for god's sake, and get on with some real work.
...because my clock says December 19, 2007. Is it April 1st already???
No wonder the malls are dead.
Where are the strippers? Why all the muscle shots? The pig cop was good though.

Jokes about DNF taking "forever" were common seven years ago. At this point, you almost can't even joke about it anymore.
Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum sonatur.
I would consider my reality to be shattered if this game ever came out. Can anyone even imagine what a "Top 10 Vaporware" list would be like without it?
I'd feel the same way about Spore, except that I actually want to play that game.
I'm pretty sure it's mentioned in some prophecy or another, but if they ever actually finish this game, expect a few horsemen to come knocking at a lot of doors. Probably some plagues, too.
This sig isn't original enough, it's time to come up with something witty...
Looks like Rocky, Rambo and Duke have a lot in common these days: Comeback kings of the steroids circuit!
Look at the games or the mega release just this year. All the innovation, the spectacular graphics. The new ideas in gameplay (Portal, Timeshift, etc). What the hell can Duke Nuke offer? Serious Sam has the crappy "Kill everything that moves" so what space will Duke Nuke offer with a one dimensional character and "wacky" characters?
Hell, even when Doom 3 came out, it had the novity factor of being to powerful for the systems of the day. What will Duke bring to the table?
Did the old venture capital dry up? Instead of releasing another teaser at this point they should be maneuvering to be acquired by another company which could then quietly bury the project. Or maybe they're maneuvering to be acquired by another company with this thing...
I'm trying to teach myself to set people on fire with my mind... Is it hot in here?
This is 3D Realms usual spin job. This isn't even something you could call a teaser. It was video they made for their Christmas party then George Boussard decided to release is publicly with moniker of 'teaser' to get their names back in the headlines. With recent new FPS releases that are making headlines, just like so many times before, they feel the need to remind people that they exist.
This is no indication of them being anywhere near release. It is still pure vaporware.
I had so many hopes that we'd have solved so many of the world's problems by the time DNF was released! I was expecting to bring the game with me to my summer timeshare on Mars!
So many dreams shattered. Oh wait, it's just a trailer, not the real thing. Dream on, then!
... Is Duke Nukem Forever considered to be the high or low water mark for vaporware?
Damn_registrars has no butt-hole. Damn_registrars has no use for a butt-hole.
Why does your link go to a sim city game? WTF?
I will refuse any release unless its Duke Nukem Forever on a Phantom Console running on an Atom Chip. Otherwise, you can forgettaboutit.
All I'm saying is this game had better redefine the first person shooter genre. It has to make every game made to date look like garbage. Literally, when I finally play Duke Nukem Forever, I had better have to look at my other games and seriously consider throwing them all in the garbage. This is my expectation of the game. As it stands now the teaser hasn't shown anything remotely impressive. It's just a lot of generic looking monsters swiping at the camera. The old 2001 trailer still looks better than this teaser. I suppose it's better to wait for an official trailer
I have nothing compelling to say
Walk into our favorite video game store during the holiday season, excited and bouncing off-the-walls about the great game that we MUST HAVE on launch day; then walk up to the counter and ask for a pre-order for Duke Nukem Forever. It's worth the $5 bucks, just to see the reaction from the store's sales staff and PC gamers.
might this game actually see the light of day after so much talk?
Well if it does then we won't have to put a stake through this undead thing's heart, will we? The question in my mind, though, is "are they still planning on using the Quake II engine?"

They've changed his voice to a higher pitch (he used to speak in a much deeper, sleazier voice, kind of like Macho Man Randy Savage) and they've made him look like a homosexual. No offence to homosexuals, but that's not the right look for Duke.
You would kind of think they'd want their teasers to be good considering we've been waiting more than a decade for the game.
Ok, I remember being in college when this guy was in his late twenties, maybe early thirties. This was in the early to mid 1990s. Duke's gotta be pushing Stallone age in video game years! He'll be doing first person shooter from a walker for crying out loud. Didn't he die and get resurrected since then, too? Sheesh!
It's not even a trailer, it's a teaser. And aptly named.
You know, I'm actually all out of jokes for this topic.
From 3D Realms' George Broussard (as seen on Shacknews): "All the footage apart from the start and end logos was captured via Fraps in game and real-time."
...is that it's implemented in Perl 6!
Was I the only person expecting to see a video of Rick Astley under that YouTube link?
I heard that GNR was going to have a new song on the DNF soundtrack as well!

It's my Sig and you can't have it. Mine! All Mine!
If it's anything like DN3D, it won't be about a particularly innovative engine
It'll be about details. Mostly humorous.
There will be strippers you can pay, and rob. There will be pool-tables with semi-realistic billiard ball physics. There will be sinks you can smash and urinals you can piss in (and you'll gain health for this for some reason).
You won't be stuck some place with a 2-inch curb you can't climb over to keep you in. Instead, the map boundaries will seem reasonable. Or at least, physical. You might still question why someone built a building across a four-lane street...
And there will be genre-jokes. Perhaps there will even be an arcade with a working version of Ms. Astro Chicken or something, to which Duke makes some comment about it taking so long to come out and not being worth the wait.
Can you be Even More Awesome?!
Do you think that the ESRB would give Duke Nukem Forever a chance? I mean, a game where you kill pig cops and get strippers to flash you... has pornos as easter eggs... no way. I don't think so. On the upside, were they to give it the dreaded AO rating, unlike PS2, Wii and X360 they'd still be able to release it since no one does the licensing for PC.
"Is it getting cold in here?" - Satan
Maybe I look forward to a new versoin of Duke because the old one was a lot of fun.
I remember about mid 1996 I believe, I was in the Navy and working shore duty at the computer repair lab in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. They had a coax network back then and we were only assigned two ip addresses for our office. We attached one of them to a hacked together Linux box running some floppy version of Slackware and installed an old ISA SMC card so we could provide NAT for a local network. That Linux machine ran Samba and had the full version of Duke3D and some maps we had made on it. We also had some IPX tools I believe. We would piece together whatever parts we could find to make enough computers to play 4-8 player death matches. If the HD you had did not have Duke installed, we found some IPXTRANFER program that allowed you to copy from one machine to another but it was really slow. Had to modify the autoexec.bat for the sound card settings, manually fire up the IPX/ODI drivers for the specific network card in the DOS PC (odi.com and smc.com?) to get on the local network and away we would go. Some of these computers had no case, just a PS, MB, mouse, KB and monitor laying on the table. Just enough to play. Some people had DX33 with 4 MB ram, the lucky ones had DX2/66 or a P60 and a soundcard. It was a blast. I learned more about setting up hardware in DOS, networking, Linux, DOS boot disks, and computers in that 6 month period messing with that game then I ever learned in a equal period before or after that. Yes, we were playing games but I learned as well. Okay, none of that knowledge directly applies to anything any more but it was something that hepled me understand and build on, not like the test and book people with no experience at all that I seem to see around here now.
If this is nothing but Duke Nukem 3D with an upgraded engine, it is quite frankly going to be more interesting to me than most of today's FPS games. Last time around, we got laser trip mines, jet packs, freeze guns, shrink rays, holograms, interactive environments, humor, cool music, cool monsters, and fun levels. Shit. I'm going to reinstall it tonight.
... and here comes the next wave of DNF jokes ... i do hope my comedy airbags are working.
Naked women?
I mean really naked... as in "we don't care about having an AO game, it's what we're aiming for" kind of naked women... in a videogame!
That would be the first of it's kind in American gaming! Everyone is scared shitless of doing it because they're scared no one will sell the game... Everyone knows Duke, demographics shows that most of the gamers can buy adult games without any problem, all they need is to release that legendary game and show the reality that we don't mind naked chicks, we like naked chicks, we want naked chicks, we're tired of almost-but-not-naked-enough-chicks from the "M" games! We want real Adult games, not the kiddie stuff!
Come on Duke, the future of gaming is in your hands! let us see some titties! Not yours, off course ^_^
I wonder if it'll run on my Indrema L600 console, modded with a Glaze3D video card.

I can't wait for this release to play it on my Phantom game system!

Come on, 3d Realms has had a hard time of it.
I hear Duke is written in Perl 6, and until the language is done, the game's just gonna have to wait.
Don't you get it they were waiting for Christmas!

Obviously they are holding this as one of the launch titels for the Phantom console.
Quick, lets start an open source Duke Nuken Forever workalike and see if we can get it released before the real thing.

I think Epic is going about this the right way. You see, they're waiting for everyone to stop making video games so that they can take the very best the art has to offer and put it all into DNF. It will be both endearing as the pinnacle of interactive entertainment as well as the epitome of the content development model. I can't wait for Beowulf Forever.
Ready your tinfoil hats !
The little details like seeing a toilet, and not only being able to use it, but being able to blow it apart, and then drink from the water shooting out of the broken pipe are what made Duke Nukem 3d memorable. Those extra bits of personality and interactivity helped make it stand out from the generic "walking through a drab and static series of corridors shooting monsters" style that other fps games of the time had.
Heck, most fps games since then haven't let you interact with and/or destroy as many objects in the environment as dn3d did. I'm always disappointed when despite the shiny new graphics in a new fps, the toilets are unflushable and invincible.
Fortunately, with physics being the current big thing, interactivity with the objects littering the levels is becoming more common.
Honestly though, I'd be surprised if they managed to keep it that fun after all these years in development. I suspect that it'll turn out to be just another shooter. Which is a shame, really, when the original was so much more interesting than "just another shooter."

When did the last Duke game come out ?
Kids today won't know the history, or what made Duke so awesome !!!

DNF has been a long time in the making, and is indeed the biggest software development undertaken in the world to date. Some of the main features we've been looking forward to in DNF have been removed due to time constraints, but may be included in future releases. In fact, they've decided to change the name from Duke Nukem Forever to Duke Nukem Vista. "Forever", they say, is more of an ideal - a road map to the future - than a physical, tangible release.
Some of the notable upgrades since the previous Duke Nukem include:
- DNV will be very very pretty
- DNV will ask you for a password after every level. For security.
The most notable feature missing, however, is that Duke Nukem himself does not appear in his game.
Despite DNV not being released yet, there is already talk of Duke Nukem 7, which may herald the return of Duke Nukem. If not, then surely it will be in DN8. In any case, the development team decided it never actually promised Duke Nukem would be in Duke Nukem Vista (he was part of Duke Nukem Forever, which is just a fuzzy warm feeling and not a real game).

I'm concerned... Isn't this one of the signs of the coming apocalypse? When hell freezes over, pigs fly, and duke nukem forever is released...
Fear the penguin.
Hasn't the game always been a teaser?
Not Duke's man-boobs of course. The genuine fleshy, wobbly awesome kind connected to a female exotic dancer. In fact, they should be the best ever - why, the time-billing records show that over 80% of the development time so far has been spent on them!
What will Duke bring to this table?
:D
It will bring us time to kick ass and chew bubblegum
But no, in all seriousness... We can all laugh at how long it's taking to make this game, but in the end it's still a game and it might or it might not be fun. Isn't that what counts?
The problem here is that we're expecting something huge (at least most of us used to) because this is Duke and its been hyped up forever and ever. The slightest news about Duke Nukem Forever quickly spreads to every gaming site you can think of. Do you think 3d Realms does not know this? In exchange they want to make sure that the game they deliver will meet the expections of gamers.
A new Crysis, Unreal, Doom, Half-Life, or something else will come out that will steal their thunder. Any existing work will be thrown out and an announcement will be made that DNF WILL be groundbreaking when it comes out.
someone will do that, sell it through the internet and make millions.
Then they would start showing up on shelves again.
Anything that depends on the retailer is no longer needed.

Next you'll be telling me it's going to come bundled with Duke Nukem Forever. Wait..
Whoa...
Duke Nukem fans have been teased for some eleven years now about this game with cameo screen shots or video clips popping up every few years of our beloved Duke kicking a little alien butt. I for one gave up waiting for it's release in 2002...
I grew up playing the shareware titles that were downloaded from local BBS systems with the rest of the Duke fans. We've all grown up now and have had a healty dose of 21st Century gaming. 3D Realms has taken so long to get the product to market they have had to rewrite it several times just to keep it up-to-date. If this thing ever does finally get released, it's going to be just like the scene in Back To The Future where Marty is in the Cafe 80's and when he gets the Wild Gunman game working, the kids take one look at it and say "You have to use your hands? That's a childs game!"
Note to 3D Realms -- Either relase it or shut up!
Sounds kind of like Grand Theft Auto, a game series that has released 8 different games (not including expansion packs) during the development history of DNF and is likely to release their 9th game before we get a full trailer for the current iteration of DNF. Never mind that the last FPS to really go for funny and strange minor details was Postal 2 and was just fucking awful.

I was a sophomore in high school when this game was announced. I didn't even have a drivers license. I am now about to finish law school, and (probably) will take the bar before this game is released. How's that for perspective.

Sorry for the commas.
None of the games after Duke3D offer this kind of creative weapon usage.
It's just more viral marketing for Cloverfield.
I'll be able to play Duke with screen resolution set to "Outside" man!
What it brings is familiarity to many people. The same game engine with unknown characters wouldn't make the money.
A great name for this game should be Duke Nukem Chinese Democracy! The real question is which will hit the stores first.. the GNR album or this game!

This is great news for web developers; Finally consumers are getting what they are paying for! But we still have a long way to go.. :)
I feel that the implementations must emerge concurrently with the drafts, we should not wait a few years for it to arrive on mainline usage. I also think that everyone's trying to rise the bar so high that nobody can pass through quickly enough, giving everyone else a chance to work it up, but leaving web developers in limbo.
Why not raise it only as high as to encourage most people to rise above it quickly enough?
...right after Axl finishes Chinese Democracy.
With thanks to Duke Nukem Forever the creationist have finally given in to the pure fact that not even god could make the entire universe in 6-7 days. Nor could he/she get Duke Nukem forever to the box ready stage no matter how many people prayed.
Maybe in another 100 years we will see the fall of religion because people just don't believe anymore.
Thanks Duke Nukem for another great service to humanity.

The game will be powered by Perl 6, but the UI will actually run in bytecode compiled Ruby. It'll run on Linux, as it's scheduled for release in the year of the Linux desktop. I suppose Kubuntu Linux with KDE4 is going to be a standard setup. The website is expected to be awesome, as by that time Firefox will pass the Acid2 test. I believe they're running it on PHP6.

the trailer they released around 2000 that showed Duke in all his shoot-em-up, explosive, flying through plate glass, motor-cycle driving, one-liner glory? I seem to recall it was a couple of minutes long, and back then it took me an age to download over dial-up (didn't have cable yet). This game looked miles above what I was playing at the time (that would have been Halflife and Quake 3 I think), with real, destructible environments and an action-movie paced storyline.
I haven't seen the new release yet but I'm wondering if that theme is still there. I remember getting chills from that 2000 trailer...
There is simply too much glass..
--- Do you believe in the day?
Try the European release of The Witcher (if you're into story-oriented RPGs, that is); I believe you can order it online from European sites and it should work in the US just fine. It only has a few fully nude character models (namely the one used for various female vampires and the dryad model that is also used for the water nymph) and some artwork showing nudity, but in general it has been made without worrying about making it AO. It's also fairly bloody, but not exceptionally so for a modern game. The dialog is sometimes a bit awkward (due to translation), but hilarious.
The American release is censored to bring it down to M...by cutting down on nudity, I'm not sure if anything else is changed. Doesn't M imply that the age recommendation is 17 or something like that? Do Americans really think that means no boobies? Where I come from, full nudity (including soft porn) generally gets an age limit of 16, to get an 18 limit due to sexual content there needs to be spreading or erect penises.
With all the time zone changes going on this year, probably someone set their calendar to April 1...
It would also be about the spectacular areas you can visit, the clever puzzles, the awesome bosses...
Of course it will ship (sometime), they will sell a million units just from the people who loved the first Duke Nukem.
I reckon it will make it out before next Xmas.
And I agree with a lot of posters here, despite the fact the first one didn't have the greatest engine at the time, it had the most character and I still think it is the most fun I have ever had playing an FPS - and I have played everyone before and since.
Shrink ray, jetpack, trip wires... Multiplay was an absolute hoot, not to this day recaptured in any other FPS.
I strongly recommend that you go back and check out the 2001 trailer which not only was ten times more interesting but in my opinion it actually LOOKED better. This Doom3 engine look is terrible for any game its used on.
Actually, IIRC VGA only supported 16 colours at 640x480 resolution. It was 256 colours at 320x240 (Mode X) or 320x200 (Mode 13h).
From the Duke Nukem Forever FAQ: 1.12 - Why is DNF taking so long? While this question constantly comes up from concerned fans, the fact is that the game is not taking as long as it may seem. As stated by several 3D Realms employees numerous times, quality games simply take time. What has been taking the most time is all of the optimizations and additions 3D Realms has been making. In the words of George Broussard, "The fact is that we're not massively delayed. Going to Unreal did set us back, but mainly because we refused to be a TC and not advance tech. We added LOD, skeletal animation, motion capture, and tons of other little enhancements to the Unreal engine to make it more interactive. That all takes time." Level designer Stephen Cole has also commented on this issue: "If DNF was a TC, it would be done by now. Levels, art, models, all are easy and quick to produce. If you want a rehashed TC, that is. If, however, you want something you haven't seen before, it takes time. If you want something that won't be outdated when it comes out, it takes more time." And also some comments by Joe Siegler: "If we had wanted some quickie piece of crap, it would have been out ages ago. It takes time to innovate - it doesn't take any time to shovel any old crap out there. Since we are not a publically held company, we aren't beholden to the same things that some big companies hold their development teams to, hence we can afford to take the time to make a quality product. Besides, once it's released, no one will care how long it took, they'll care that they have a cool fun game."

Hopefully being as insanely fun of a single player experience as Duke3D was back in the 90s. Much like another poster here, I have yet to play a single player FPS that was as much fun.
because they're going to use G'n'R's "Chinese Democracy" album for a soundtrack...
The ability to lay traps for your opponent, and kill them with no further action on your part, were excellent for multiplayer fun. I had more fun playing Duke Nukem with friends than I did playing nearly any other shooter. Being able to play mind games and mental one-upmanship with friends adds a lot to the shooter experience. It's suddenly not merely a test of reflexes and accuracy, and allows a more cerebral gameplay. ("Hmm, I know he's going to want this super-spiffy weapon or healthpack. I think i'll put a laser trip mine above the door and line the room with pipe bombs!")
:D
The mine + pipe bomb interaction was stellar.
Yes, I'd love to be able to rocket jump (rather than just my gibbed bits flying all over). I rather hope they fix that. Even so, being able to play pinball, arcade games, and actually have level designs that seemed semi-believable ("Oh, wow, a bathroom!") are something I don't often see. FEAR kindof did that, I think, and Half Life 2 did as well (now that I think of it), but Duke really pioneered that in the shooter genre. I'd be down for playing DNF, most certainly.

1) The possible release of vaporware that was thought to be doomed to the eternity that is "Duke Nukem Forever"
2) Jack Thompson.
You have NO idea how long it took to come up with this...so enjoy.
I was thinking this morning that if (playing as Duke) I could grab a wounded pigcop by the neck and then proceed to bash his face in with the butt of a weapon and then kick the dying corpse backwards and shoot it again to finish it off, complete with appropriate spasming, then that would almost guarantee sales - daikatana-esque failings or not.
oh oh oh - and if there was a corny dialogue synced to the smashing of the face that would be awesome:
"Hail."*smash*
"To.
*smash*
"The."
*smurch*
"King."
*kick*
"Baby."
*gunfire*

Seriously, just sit back and watch it like it's not a Duke trailer... I didn't find it to be all that great, personally. The graphics (which, really, that's all the teaser was, since there was really no gameplay) were subpar compared to some of the games that are out *now*.

I wonder, if there was a fake DNF torrent, would people actually download it?
