I am a former contributor to Wikipedia, making over 10,000 edits before giving up and becoming a vandal. Protection is easy to bypass. The easiest way to bypass it is by registering sleeper accounts, where you create a account, then come back a few days later to vandalize the article. Even better is by making credible edits before going on a vandalism rampage.

Wikipedia's vandalism methods are very ineffective. Wikipedia gets over 200,000 edits a day, around three a second. Even with bots and hundreds of patrollers, lots of vandalism gets through, sometimes for months. The vandals know it, and they make fun of Wikipedia. Like Willy on Wheels, Wik/Gzornenplatz, North Carolina Vandal, etc.

The trouble is Wikipedia is now one of the most visited sites on the web, no thanks to Google bombing which means Wikipedia shows up as the top result for many searches now. Over 60 million edits have been made, a lot of them vandalism. My advice is, get out of Wikipedia as fast as you can, if you are an administrator, resign. Remembmer that many colleges and schools will now fail your assingments for citing Wikipedia. People have been harrased and libeled on Wikipedia. It is only a matter of time before someone really gets hurt.

Wikipedia is basically dangerous. Many of its top editors are ex-usenet trolls. The worst section of all is Userboxes, which were invented by a vandal and is a constant source of vandalism by admins.

Wikipedia, it is not as free as you think. Remember, this is coming from a former editor of over 10,000 edits. I know the system better than many admins do. Type in special:log/block on the Wikipedia address bar to see how much vandalism Wikipedia gets. It has to ban over 5000 accounts/ip addresses a week!

10 Years ago, I worked in a small photo development business as a darkroom technican. Kodak film was 90% of the film we developed, but unlike most film, Kodak film was more expensive to develop because the propreitery technology used in it. Also that year our photo lab had bought a Macintosh running Mac OS 8 to help us manage our film database. Part of the special offer was a 28.8K modem connection and a Gremlin TZ digital camera. This camera could take 640x480 pictures and used a AMC (Now known as firewire) cable to connect to the camera. We were amazed for just the cost of a floppy disk ($0.50) we could take 40 high quality photos instantly!

I was so impressed that I set up a website about our photo service using pictures from my digital camera. I had over 1000 pictures on that site and it was being hosted by a Slackware Linux box with Apache 0.7 and Kernel 0.95 (Yes, the linux dark ages).

We got in contact with Gremlin Technolgies INC and we decided to sell Gremlin Digicams to our customers and for 1/10 of the price of ordianry development we offered our customers prints. The service was so popular that we made $600,000 profits in 1994.

We completly ditched kodak in 1995 and now we are a huge photobusiness that has 40 employees and makes over 1,000,000 in profits a year.

I am no longer an employee as I am now a freelance Debian on Mac technican, but it just goes to show that digital cameras can be a lucrative business if you ditch the analog monoliths!

As someone who runs Debian Gnu/Linux on thier G5, i can give my view. I can't RTFA because its slashdotted. Keep in mind that "Linux" to the end user often means KDE/GNOME.

First of all, The Aqua GUI can get in the way after a while, and there isn't really a good option to turn it off. KDE lets you terraform the GUI quite a bit. You can emulate the Aqua look with the "Liquid" style, but most KDE distributions use "Keramik" by default. Kermamik uses rounded, gradiented buttons, along with the "Crystal" icon set by deafult, but it can be turned off and switch to more flatter and simpler styles like .net and Plastik. The gnome styles are also quite simple, with Cleanice and Smokey being the simplest. Not to mention that KDE 3.2 and Gnome 2.4 have cleaned up their act, you will never have to touch a text file again. Also the hardware dectection has become top notch excellent. Forget having to edit textfiles, forget about cdroms that don't eject, forget about modprobing, its all automagic now!

Also there are THOUSANDS more apps for linux, in Debian there are 13000(!) different packages, offering a ploethera of software, The new GIMP with a easy GUI and CMYK support, the Fast OpenOffice 1.1, the sleek totem movie player, plus much much more. Not to mention you can run more with Wine, or MacOnLinux if you use a Gx processor.

Mac OS X on the other hand has broken binary compatibillity, fries Firewird disks, Costs $129 per point release, where linux is just a simple click of the "dist upgrade" button.

I am a apple zealot, but I don't like their OS, their OS has gone down hill ever since Mac OS 8. I have ran Linux on them ever since, and after trying MacOS Jaguar and Panther, I'm glad to use Linux.
