I would have personally killed many people over my lifetime if there were no legal consequences in doing so. Its way easier to diagnose than most things. When in doubt, ghost it and see if theres a performance improvement with the new drive.
That said, ive had flash drives go from working fine to dead in a few short static induced moments. As these drives will be inside the PC and far less likely to be treated like a portable drive, hopefully it won't have those over handling issues.

This could be a system for resolving ips on a local machine (service) or a system for resolving them over the internet (servers). No one said it was a technical problem with the root servers. The registrar part of the domain name system is being stressed.
You could exchange the same level of "useability" for security by disconnecting your machine from the network as well. As in your solution, dumbing machines down, are not solutions. All that would happen in this case, is that there would be some kind of firmware exploit. It could be as simple as a ddos. If the machine isn't updatable, then how could an exploit get patched? Catch 22.
The solution to this social engineering problem is to teach people that email lies constantly ( a social solution for a social problem, how revolutionary!!). If something comes over the email and its the LEAST bit out of the ordinary, delete it.
