Apparently you don't work in a job that provides service to the general public. I do, and 90 percent of the people that come into the store don't even feel comfortable installing software. How hard is that? Press next a few times and you're done.

I'd say you give the vast majority way too much credit. I'm not sure whether it's fear, lazyness or true stupidity that makes end users the way they are, but they definitely can't figure computers out.

Now, I agree that people do care about DRM, but they need to be told about this stuff in ways that aren't specific to computers, just like your example shows.

An interesting idea... Actually, the type of machine that would be needed in that sort of application doesn`t really need to be that fast. Something with an ARM or similar processor running linux would probably do and that can be made even smaller. Add a custom interface for keeping recipes or whatever your need is and I`d say that`s a pretty sweet machine.

It just wouldn't be worth it in the end.

Well, if they want to keep their traffic up and keep people from moving over to Digg maybe they should think about actually doing their damned jobs sometime. If this was a non-profit site or something I could understand the slack, but they're making money here and they need to step things up.

Honestly, I'm getting pretty sick of slashdot lately. I'm finding a lot more interesting articles over at digg. The only thing missing is the witty satire of the slashdot crowd.

No, I'm referring to the "Optional Hardware Updates" section which, for me, shows an update for "Nvidia NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600."

I've installed it before and device manager showed the publisher as Microsoft. Now, I'm not sure if they actually wrote the driver or not, but I know it messed a lot of things up and I had to go download an official version of the driver later on.

Actually, if I recall correctly, Microsoft puts out some bigger drivers too. If you go to windowsupdate.com with an Nvidia card, you'll often see a driver published by Microsoft for that card. Be very careful about using it, though, as it can often cause problems.

Do you mean the DNG converter? The camera raw plugin is only supported up to version 2.4 in CS1, Sone of the newer cameras, like the Canon Rebel EX need a higher version of the camera raw plugin, hence an upgrade to CS2 is needed.

For one thing, Jobs seemed quite pleased that most developers out there are already using XCode. Also, XCode is free. That scores it some points and makes convincing the accountant that the switch would be good much easier. Lastly, you say Metrowerks is not planning on supporting universal binaries? I think that's going to hurt them more in the long run than it will hurt people buying macs. Mac developers need to support both platforms for a while, otherwise they're going to piss people off. If they can do that easily just by switching to XCode (assuming they already write cocoa apps) then I think we'll see more developers migrating to XCode in the future.

It frees up screen real-estate and makes a bit more sense, imho, because any time you're moving to an application (open or closed) you're still going to the same place. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that you can't have a all your applications there and still have it work well. Fortunately, it's easy enough to go into the applications folder for more seldomly used apps.

I'd very much like to see something similar on linux, but unfortunately I have a feeling the idea's been patented.
