Wrong. Google refuses to release their own app for Windows Phone which is on par with the apps they release for iOS and Android. So it's up to Microsoft to write their own app.

WCF with a Duplex Contract comes to mind. Or just sockets (as somebody above mentioned).

Fact is: Java and .NET can do pretty much the same things and it mostly comes down to prefference. I prefer C# because I still have nightmares from Java 1.3 (not to mention making GUI's in AWT/Swing ... *shudder*). Java 1.5 looked like a big improvement though with some nice stuff I felt was missing.

Well good thing it's at least two specific vendors then.
Apperarently our legislators are also bought off. If you as an elected politician get your salary from Microsoft Corporation or Apple Computer inc, ...
I really doubt any EU politician has any say in what their IT department is doing. Did it occur to you that maybe, after evaluating all their options, the web team decided that WMV was just the best/easiest/least-sucky tech for the job all on their own?

If you want such networks to develop, you will have to give the access for FREE (as in Beer).

Because everybody knows that developing such networks costs them nothing.
Ok so $25 is a bit on the high side, but I don't see why they couldn't charge a small fee dor the service they provide.
