while they have trouble with calc 1 and other liberal arts courses
since when is calc a liberal arts course?
i certainly agree with the spirit of your post, though i don't agree that "just about anyone can learn how to do most of the crap that we know how to do." there are just too many people out there who are still afraid of their VCR, er, DVD player.:)
You can pick up a GF4Ti4200 card for about $70, or a (much slower, but fast enough for most modern games) GF4 MX440 card for about $40. You should pick the card up through an online vendor, since storefront retailers don't stock these cards now.
if your brother is going to be playing half-life 2 when it comes out, then make sure you get a directX 9 card like the ATI 9600 card.
I think the biggest problem with windows "worms" is the windows user. 99% of windows worms are simple VBS scripts. if the average windows user took a look at an email attachment with a.vbs extension and simply deleted it then there would be very few issues with microsoft "security". the problem is that the typical windows user is much less computer savy than the typical linux user.
it is just as easy to write a shell script for linux or an applescript (do macs still use this?) for the mac, but the typical linux user wouldn't execute a shell script sent to them by a stranger, and there aren't enough mac users for anyone to notice if they ran a dangerous applescript script.
i personally use win2k because i play lots of games on my computer, and i'm not patient enough to wait two years for some geek to port an outdated game to linux before i can play it.
i have *never* had a computer virus or worm on my win95, wind98 or win2k boxes, and i don't bother with antivirus software.

The difference being that one *chooses* to be a moron, er mormon, so it's perfectly acceptable to make fun of them. ;-o
