    i didn't realize that EIC would result in more returned than taxed. i was being facetious about the 80% tax bracket. at any rate, even $10K won't get a single parent + 1 child out of poverty.


    take an H&R tax course? ugh. no thanks. i spend one hour per year filing my taxes with turbotax and i get my refund direct deposited into my bank account 1 week later.

    You'd be suprised. People with lower incomes and kids, especially single parents, get huge refunds due to Earned Income Credit. I've seen yearly income W2's in the $5000 range get $4000 tax refunds. That's not a typo. Yes, the refund nearly doubles their annual total income. All part of the welfare portion of our society...

    let me get this straight. you know a single parent who earned $5000 in a year. They paid $4000 in taxes, because people who are living below the poverty line are in the 80% tax bracket, and then they got all of their money back at the end of the year?

    Fascinating.

    I agree. For that type of user the best computer is probably a used Mac. Don't waste money on a machine with a G4 or G5 cpu. Just pick up one of the early Macs for $100 and be done with it.

    it cracks me up that companies like Dell and Apple manage to convince people that they need the latest and greatest hardware when all the average user needs is something that'll handle web surfing and word processing duties

    I guess you could spend the $500 you save by buying a Windows PC on the tech support. Or you could spend $100 of it on basic computer skills classes and put the extra money in the bank.

    I haven't had any problems with my pc since I switched from IE/Outlook to Firefox/Thunderbird, and last I heard they still weren't making any games for the Mac :)

    your examples are rather silly. why would you click on a link in an email that claims that your paypal account was charged when 1) most recipients probably don't have a paypal account, and 2) recipients who have a paypal account most likely didn't have a charge for the exact amount mentioned in the email?

    these 'social engineering' attacks cause me to marvel at the stupidity of the average computer user.

    another /.er made a good point -- it's easier to encourage users to switch to a safer browser than it is to expect them to think.

    and for the record, i don't have anything against firefox. it's my primary browser.

    The offer is for 15 megabits down rather than 15 megabytes.

    And what's the point of having all of that download bandwidth? Unless you're downloading shit from Verizon's local servers, you're still going to be limited by the machines between you and that web server. I've never seen download speeds above 600KB/s, and most average less than 100KB/s.

    Apparently the poster isn't a beer drinker. Red Hook offered a stout brewed with starbucks coffee for years.

    Here is their explanation for why they discontinued it two years ago:

    Sadly, Doubleblack Stout was retired in January of 2002 because demand for the beer dropped to levels where commercial production was no longer viable. We have secured the recipe in the brewers' vault in hopes that one day Doubleblack will rise like a phoenix from the ashes of brewing history to once again slake the thirsts of stout fans from sea to shining sea.

    I'm amazed that anyone clicks on those links. Best case scenario you get an annoying string of web pages; worst case scenario you've just confirmed for the spammer that they've found a live email address.

    Sure it's a small market, but apples aren't. Lets say they sell 10k apple copies. 10k x $90 is a fair few programers

    Computer games on the Mac cost $90?! Well, even if they do, $90K isn't even going to get you two developers with the talent to work on a project like HL2. Maybe not even one.

    I would really enjoy a GTA game based in Europe. I bet they'll get around to it if these games keep selling the way they have in the past. This has to be one of the most profitable game franchises in history.

    OTOH, i don't have a problem with the stereotyping. it's a game. there are bad white guys in these games, though they don't get as much screen time as the other gangs.

    If you read the article you realize that most of the mistakes made had nothing to do with geography.

    "Microsoft employees were questioned by police in China, where it is an offence to refer to Taiwan as country or as the Republic of China"

    How is this a geography issue? Taiwan recognizes itself as an independent country.

    "A game called Age of Empires 2 offended the Saudi Arabian authorities because it showed victorious Muslim armies turning churches into mosques"

    Again, how is this a geography issue?

    I think this article is just bait for the daily MS bashing on /.

    I have an ATI 9800 Pro and I'm running at 1280 x 1024 at Medium detail with no problems. It's not an ATI vs NVidia issue. It's probably a setup issue. -chris
