I realy dig the SEO that's being employed in this headline, considering the recent story of a large great white shark being physically eaten by an unknown (probably a larger shark.)
I used to be like you. "Read my lips, no new taxes!" Taxes are bad, taxes are the devil, they get so much and waste so much already.
Until I became treasurer on my homeowner's board. We are required by our master deed (which is approved and registered with the city, therefore is legally binding) to provide certain services. A new regulation from Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac states that we must take on a certain expense or they will not back loans issued in our neighborhood. If they do not back the loan, then 95% of mortgage companies will not issue it because they can't sell the liability. Therefore, no one in our neighborhood can sell their home unless the buyer pays 100% cash.
This expense represents a 35% increase in our budget. We cannot legally cut services. So we have to issue a "tax" (dues increase to the HOA) to cover the cost. The benefit to the community is that they will be able to sell their homes again--we've already seen a 20% loss in value.
So yes, taxes are sometimes necessary. In my case it's forced from the outside. In the government's case, it could be due to waste and inefficiency but I'm willing to bet that is a very small percentage (and a study I've read of welfare waste backs this up). It could also be due to increasing population, increased infrastructure regulatory requirements, dwindling resources, etc, etc, etc.
What would they do for anyone else? They'd just seize the servers for investigation and be done with it. Not let you give some wimpy cry about your retention policies--hard to enforce retention when your server is sitting in some FBI storeroom waiting to have its hard drives combed over.
This is status quo as to what I've seen so far about this. People who don't know what they're talking about are actually describing both sides with the wrong terms. This happens to be a topic I know a lot about, and I see how they get it wrong; it scares me to think about their reporting of stuff that I don't know a lot about.
There's also what I refer to as the "lone voice in the wilderness" effect. Whereby, whatever the issue, if someone simply states that they have an "inexpressible doubt" in something then they will seem to be the smartest person in the room. This is used quite often in political debates. It's also quite effective for opening up "I told you so" options later, when they never really told anyone anything.
My favorite bit of this is the "rest of the world moves on to take the lead..." (emphasis mine). Who are they taking it from? Oh... I see.
BTW I feel perfectly fine posting this from an American perspective as the poster decided to deride Americans. I personally feel all nations are alike and we are all citizens of the world. But you awakened an inner nationalism.
After reading that whole blurb, I think this is the more plausible explanation. It isn't the movie companies limiting netflix, it's netflix limiting itself. They pay a certain price for those DVDs which become theirs to rent as they wish, but streaming (with no physical media to own) costs a license fee per stream.
Let's say everything mentioned here actually was entirely self-contained to the author's city, as he or she obviously believes. Which it is not, obviously. I pose to you, if it weren't there, it would just be somewhere else.
I'm all for what bitcoin is trying to achieve. But this is just a news story about an exchange which didn't know what it was doing, trading in a currency that hasn't been fully proven, operating in an unknown capacity from somewhere in Japan, and without any oversight at all. That's like millions of people asking my buddy Joe who lives in a trailer to hang onto their money for them. Oh no, bad decisions were made?
Why bother? It's rarely-used, practically useless bits anyway. A quote from John Nash: "Facts are available where direct memory fails in many circumstances." In this context, that could mean use spotify and netflix to stream your dumb music and movies, rather than saving them indefinitely.
I don't see myself ever using it, seems like a terrible idea to me. But I should note that they do require to login to the wifi using your xfinity username and password, so it stands to reason that they have the ability to track your actions online.
Thank you for using language appropriately. I thought "apparatchik" was some kind of phone autocomplete problem, and forced me to look it up. Now I know a new word. Kudos!
I think this is a failure of editing. WIkipedia's database is 9gb compressed and 44gb uncompressed. (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W...) The statement that it is less than Wikipedia's database is a useless comparison.
Because the AC's are hidden, I'll elaborate that tangodropbox existed before dropbox. I'm afraid your comment is indicative of the perspective that candy crush fans will have.
Yes, it should be their prerogative. That's part of the basic foundation of our government, and was choen as the best method of government by intelligent people who had lived under tyrannical absolutes.
As always, if you disagree with your state's laws, you can attempt to push a vote to change them or move to another state. That sounds dismissive, but it's good that it's an available option. If the law is national and therefore pushed from above, you have no way to get out from under it save moving to another country. Moving to another country is probably not appealing or easy.
"The amounts involved are not discussed" because this is a non-story. I spent (served time?) 12 Years in a Tennessee school in a highly populated area and creationism was not taught at all. This article intends to imply that us backwards rednecks are teachin' the chillrens 'bout Jesus, and that simply isn't happening to the statewide scale this fancy map displays.
LOL, parent just said "Hey J.D., love your stuff buddy. So much so that I'll pick up anything new as soon as it becomes available. Oh, but you had a plan that you set in motion for when that material would be available? Well fuck that, because I'm downloading that shit, because fuck you."
The main issue that conservatives (at least in the US) have in their thought process (trust me, I am one) is that they believe "responsible," "capitalist," and "hard-working" actually leads one to become one of those few wealthy individuals.
Unfortunately this is usually not the case at all; the responsible, capitalist and hard-working ones only lead those wealthy few to become more wealthy.
This is a truth I think conservatives should realize and embrace, so that we can actually come up with real solutions to problems.
You had me until the farting into the wind part. The outrage is actually very carefully crafted into election results for the "good guys" who do nothing but continue the same policies, just not as publicly.
"...as Americans drive less"
Isn't the fuel tax meant to cover roads and etc, whose maintenance is at least loosely tied to their actual use? Therefore, if Americans drive less, why is more tax money necessary? This is just a grab for general ledger, nothing else.

I'm biased but for some reason that sounds to me like someone saying they've never had air before, or water.

Let's ask Joy Stewart what she thinks about the undue agony and terror. Oh, she and her unborn child are both unavailable for comment.
But... but... but.... It's google glass, and we hate that! Right? right? glasshole!
Just out of curiosity, how many minutes ago was it that you googled "Ken Ham"?

Why would I want to do business with a company with no clearly defined contacts?
