Way to revive and old thread. I never said it had a primary purpose, though I see how you could missinturpret it. A screwdriver is primarily for screwing in stuff. A screwdriver's only purpose (by design) is to screw stuff. Just because you use a screwdriver to stab something, which you could do, doesn't mean that one of it's purposes is to stab things. So things can have multiple uses with a single purpose. You could use a penis to poke holes in walls, but I doubt you are going to find someone that honestly believes that a purpopse of the penis is to poke holes in walls.

I for one will second this post. JavaScript, or ECMAScript, is a very powerful and flexible language. The fact that it has only been implemented for use in web browsers with HTML (this is not entirely true by the way) shouldn't be a reason to look down on JS as a language. HTML and DOM on the other hand are garbage for writing web apps. DOM has it's uses but really, using a Document Object Model for creating Applications is really ass backward. Now I did recently just leave a project that I lead, which used XUL and Javascript with home grown AJAX (or even SJAX if you will), and that turned out to work out pretty well and is an production application gaining some recognition in the realm of scientific research. The biggest problem with XUL is it's poorly supported (if firefox doesn't need it then it doesn't get built or fixed), is based on a DOM where it should really use a AOM (Application Object Model) and is more or less (not talking technically) a hack on top of HTML (you could do most of the same stuff with HTML and XBL)

Application browsers will some day exist, hopefully in my life time. Oh and XUL better kick it in high gear before M$ and it's XAML comes in and walks all over it.

I guess ICO wasn't for everyone, and SoC won't be either. I personally list ICO as one of the best games of all time (tied pretty close with Katamari). Ico was not entirely original, but it had some interesting puzzels that were not overly complex. It was not bogged down with meaning less violence, tasks that require perfect timing, and long puzzels that you would end up doing over and over again. I walked through it from begining to end having to revert to a save very few times. The look and feel of the game is certainly one of the best I have ever seen , not in pixel/polygon count, but instead in beauty and simplisity. The characters have feeling, and you even begin to feel for them (if you're not totaly devoid of affect).

SoC on the other hand, has an interesting concept. It was very short (yes shorter than ICO) and not as visually impressive. The scale of the colosii was great, but the puzzels were mostly simple (specially when they gave you obvious hints). I had really hoped for a more Ico esque game, with deep puzzels and characters I could care about. SoC is fun and I suggest it, but it is a disappointment to Ico fans. If your not an Ico fan you just might like it more than those that are.

Right now high end software can cost any where from hundreds to thousands of dollars. The average consumer can't aford the latest and greates photoshop every time they want to edit a simple picture or make a simple peice of art. So if companies moved to a per use licensing then the consumers would be able to use the latest and greatest a couple times a year. Imagine you log into your music editing service and only pay for the time used, then anyone could edit a song here and there. Yes it would be come more costly for those that need to use this software on a regular basises but I'm willing to pay for that in exchange for being able to use a product only once with out costing me a weeks pay.

Scientificaly this may be considered anecdotal evidence, but enough anecdotal evidence to convince me that families are important to the up bringing of healthy (mentally and physically) children. When the grand parent poster spoke of marriage, they did specificy staying together for the rest of their lives, he was obviously speaking of something different than a breachable contract. The paper is not the life long bliss, the life long biss should be there long before any papers are involved (which are really only for gaining governmental benifit or appeasing others).

Sex is primarily for producing children, It has NO OTHER purpose. Yes one of the side effects of Sex is good feelings, because if it hurt the human race would have probably died off a long time ago.

Having come from divorced parents (more than one time over) I have a bit of experience and know that my parents lack of commitment to each other certainly played a huge role in my up bringing and has left me with many issues to deal with later in life.

On another note, no one is talking about genocide, or any other version of killing. There is no suggesting that people be stopped from having children based on genetics or any things that would interfere with evolution. What we are suggesting is that people be held accountable for raising children. You can't drive a car without a license, so why should you be allowed to have/raise children with out one. I just think we would have alot less problems with guns in schools and issues over violence in video games if we only allowed attentive people to parent. I'm even all for continued retesting to make sure parents continue to do their job.
