If you create something and sell X copies, and in the meantime I "steal" a copy, that doesn't mean you have now sold X-1 copies. I didn't plan to purchase the copy in the first place, so there's really no lost profit.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with that entirely. If you pirate software, then true you're not paying the producer for it. However, if you never would have purchased the software in the first place, then the owner can't claim lost revenue because that revenue would never have happened. Pirating software doesn't deprive the producer of revenue unless you would normally purchase it (in lieu of pirating).

Well of course that would be stealing, taking something that doesn't belong to you. Normally when you steal something, the original owner is no longer in posession of it. Now if it were possible to replicate something (think Star Trek replicators) would it then be stealing if you scanned that pet rock and made your own replica of it?

If you enable Program Launch Monitoring then Norton will tell you about absolutely every little thing that accesses the internet. This is a good thing, but from what I can see, they've taken out the damn option to "Don't show me this bullshit again, of course Firefox is going online!" and it keeps happening.

I've heard different people say that they will always install programs like zone alarm or norton internet security on "any" system they are called to fix. However, I don't think these programs are that good for an average user. True, those popups tell you that "something" is trying to access the Internet, but if the user doesn't know what "something" is, and wants his activity to "just work" he'll click "allow" because "yes of course I want to buy that book off Amazon." I've told some users of these programs to just block everything that they don't know what it is, and if it "breaks" something, we'll easily fix it later. But they'd rather allow every single thing than to break some type of connectivity so they can't do what they were trying to do.

Those software firewall programs are really only good for more advanced users who know what they are doing. But the more advanced user isn't going to do dumb things the average user would (like installing the latest "smiley" set called "breakmycomputer.exe". :)

Ah, but I can't start into the distro because the bootloader is screwed!

Well if the bootloader is not configured in ANY operating system, you won't be able to boot into said operating system. I've installed several different distros of Linux and the only one I remember installing that didn't automatically configure the bootloader was Gentoo. The rest of them did it automatically and rebooted. The case with Gentoo isn't a problem though because when you get to the "configure bootloader" section of the install, you're inside the liveCD OS so you can still get into the config on your hard drive.

If a linux bootloader got screwed up, you can use a LiveCD to boot, mount the hard drive, and fix it. Similarly, if a Windows bootloader got fried, boot with the recovery console, or a boot disk (aka livecd) and "fdisk /mbr". I'm not sure about Mac OS X but I'm sure it's similar. So I'm not sure what the problem is.

How do you configure a network connection on linux. Explain in one paragraph.

I think it's a bit unfair to compare configuring a network in Mac OSX to the same in Linux because each Linux distro has different utilities. I'd imagine linux network config would be similar across distros on the commandline (use ifconfig...) but if you're talking GUI tools, there are so many different tools (and different GUI's) so keeping them all the same would be difficult, and defeat the purpose of different GUI's.

in cmd.exe, the '/' character can be used to separate folders in a path, but it doesn't work with tab completion.

Say I have a folder called Folder1 that contains Folder2. If I type 'cd Folder1/Fold[TAB]' the CLI does nothing, just beeps at me. Even though I typed the path delimiter, tab completion is still looking in Folder1's parent folder to complete the command. If I used '\' instead, tab completion would look inside Folder1 and be able to complete the path as Folder1\Folder2.

So yeah you can use '/' but it doesn't work too well.
