  2. 2 fold job on How Do IT Guys Get Respect and Not Become BOFHs? · · Score: 1

'IT Support' is at least a two fold role. First, you have a psychological problem (the user's distress at their unknown and scary tech prob). Secondly, you have their technical issue. You can probably tell which users really need the psych-work up front but when someone takes the time to contact you because their ${life:+internets} isn't working right, that probably means they are afraid and fear = defensive asshole. The additional problems happen on both sides but there are total BOFHs out there and do ruin it for the rest of us...

Necessity is the mother of invention. The feature must come after the need for it.

Discovery is sometimes the pre-need 'invention' but probably helps more in the hardware industry than GUI stuff. Like how to make silicon do something different..on accident or that we learned protons do such and such...

Proof: If you have it installed, what IP does it go to when you search your files? 127.0.0.1:4664 Oh snap, what a concept!

That would be the Google Desktop Search redirect-proxy? Where a connection goes from there can be anywhere they want. It's just like any other IP tunnel.

Turn on Windows Indexing service? It works just like updatedb (locate) in Linux, which was listed above but not the updatedb part. If updatedb doens't run on a schedule, then locate is not up-to-date. Windows Explorer's search is more like 'find' in *nix. It maintains no index and is fairly quick for short recursive searches (sorta).

    So:

If you run Windows and want quicker searches, turn on the freggin autoindex.
If you run Linux and want quicker searches, add updatedb to your crontab.

Done. Quick searches for free! (or you already paid for it with Windows)

    Think disease.

You don't want people to catch influenza because it reduces the chance of you getting it...Even if your enemies get the flu, it still increases the chances of them passing it on to your or your family or your office, etc.. The 'safer' we all are online decreases the odd's of something bad happening to each of us.

The indirect reasons are usually as good as the direct ones.

I do agree that 'pushing' some brand of software seems silly but I'll bet you are indirectly advertising for Nike or Old Navy or someone the moment you put on your shoes or a shirt. That indirect advertisment is as good as a paid commercial...If not better.
