  1. A rehashing of Cass Sunstein's ideas? on The Rise of Filter Bubbles · · Score: 1

This seems rather similar to the ideas presented in Cass Sunstein's Republic.com, published in 2001, at least insofar as people end up surrounding themselves with what we want, rather than need, to see. Quoting the book description: "What happens to democracy and free speech if people use the Internet to listen and speak only to the like-minded? What is the benefit of the Internet's unlimited choices if citizens narrowly filter the information they receive? Cass Sunstein first asked these questions in 2001's Republic.com." I'm not sure that this talk expands much on, or even acknowledges, Sunstein's contributions to this topic. Perhaps his ideas got filtered out.

  2. The burden of proof is reversed. on Nation-Wide Internet Censorship Proposed For Australia · · Score: 1

You can't just cast aside false positives, though. It's as if you're asking what's wrong with murder on the presupposition that nobody is ever hurt.

This particular method of censorship also reverses the burdens of proof. Rather than the government going to court to prove that a defendant has something illegal or that a site should be blocked, it appears that the government has carte blanche proscribe access to sites; presumably people will now need to sue to have their material unblocked, rather than the government suing them. This can be rather burdensome, particularly for people who are on the margins of society.

  3. the quake wars screenshots indicate otherwise on Doomed: How id Lost Its Crown · · Score: 1

well, it may look like the engine is only capable of doing dark well, but from these screenshots, it looks as if it can do light outdoor environments: http://www.shacknews.com/screens.x/et_quakewars/En emy%20Territory:%20Quake%20Wars/1/thumbs/051705_et qw_1.jpg

  4. heretic and hexen do run in a newer engine on Red Orchestra Mod Released For UT2004 · · Score: 1

check out http://www.doomsdayhq.com/; the engine not only runs doom, but also heretic and hexen. check out the screenshots for doom, heretic, and hexen. though i'm not positive, i think the engine is currently being ported to linux as well. joy.

  5. Re:Yet another WWII game? - mod parent up! on Gearbox Readying WWII Shooter For UbiSoft? · · Score: 1

first, Randy Pitchford works for gearbox, second, it makes a good point about other fps games in other genres. i too don't understand why people seem to lash out when they hear an fps taking place during world war II. it's hardly as if they are all carbon copies of each other--rtcw and moh:aa are both ww II games, and they certainly differ a great deal (within the fps genre) finally, it answers the 'Where's the story here?' thread. 'gearbox is telling this particular story because it has wanted to for many years'--just hearing 'telling this particular story' is enough to get me exicted about the prospects of this game (the screenshots don't hurt either) -stock

  6. Re:Where's the story here? on Gearbox Readying WWII Shooter For UbiSoft? · · Score: 1

well, it appears there are screenshots (albeit small ones), so it seems as if it is in development. plus, it looks pretty neat--could this be another Source engine game? gearbox has worked closely with Valve in the past, and Source is supposed to be familiar for people that already know the halflife engine, which gearbox does. in any event, i think it's something to at least keep an eye on. -stock

  7. Re:Not surprising on Only Xbox Port of Doom 3 Will Have Co-operative Play · · Score: 1

I'm not entirely sure what previous Mac releases of id games has to do with this issue. id will still release Mac and Linux binaries, and they will have the 'full functionality' of the pc game I'm sure. It's not as if id were developing the Xbox port in-house, and deliberately leaving co-op out on every platform, save the Xbox. Rather, Doom 3 being designed as a pc game, and the company that is doing the port from the pc to the Xbox (Vicarious Visions) has taken it upon themselves to add co-op. Do I wish that id would include co-op in Doom 3 on the pc? Yes. Does this bit of news do anything to suggest that id has 'sold out' to Microsoft in anyway, or mean that there will be no Mac or Linux binaries? It seems not. -stock
