First I'll attempt with counterpoint by citing (a) the usefulness enemies to retain power, (b) similarities with extremes in both jewish and christians in principles and means (and examples), (c) that the parts of the elephant you blindly touch is as fractalized as the Maine coast, (d) the general public apathy/tepidity to act juxtaposed against oppressed minorities struggling to survive, (d) that terror will always be a tool both by the little (the rebels) and the big (e.g. RioTinto, Standard Oil) until people wake up to the lie. (e) there is no difference dying in an bang or in a breaking levee
Here's another tack:
Global Reporting stimulates Global Opinions about shit that almost everyone, in some way, is totally clueless about in trying to explain.
Either you were there, or not; either you were a detatched witness or you were biased. When it's eye-opening, pucker-uping shit then its usually about grunts/expendables looking in the mirror one day and seeing someone who can't go home again.
Not the same anymore from experiencing some insane, mis-guided, self-delusional bullshit they said "i can't do this anymore; i just aint me". "No Mas"
So: to respond to your queries about muslims by who knows less of them than their digits on hand implies that (at least) I have no god in the fight.
One: They are speaking out. They are a minority, sure, but they decry what is happening as much as you do. As a minority, like OWS or the TP even, their voices do not gain any mainstream media attraction. Unless you search you will not hear them.
Two: To the larger group of StatusQuo, don't rock-the-boat, there-you-have-it/there-it-is majority who prefer feeling over fact, don't like to have to think a whole lot and have difficulty communicating in words - that muslim minority (as vocal on rights and injustice as on violence) like all the other fringes who just want to stir up trouble, are percieved as a nuisance to infiltrate, mis-guide and, if caught, serve as a warning to others not to trust the resolute when it comes to making plans.
Three: Have you entertained the possibility that your understanding, the aggregate assembled or compiled from collected stories, might be tainted by information (often deliberately) ommited, or otherwise FUBAR from the 'boots on the ground', 1st-person, actual experience?
Four: Understanding is a more difficult path than letting your ego latch onto the emotional response of the sensational. It's what keeps the charade in play.
Five: when/if you realize your post has become recursive, that's its also become your "GODDAMN FUCKING BULLSHIT" as well as same of countless 'programmed', manufactured, well-spun, pawns in the game of the System; then you will understand and your questions closer to real targets.
TC: I've been on this board a long time and hold you, docruby and and fistfull of others in both respect and regard. Get over this before this, or the next-big-thing makes your head ASPLODE!
So, corpo-food processors provide more affordable food that just happens to have little nutritional benefits and also be hazardous to your long-term health. Instead of unhappy customers rioting, they're squatting at home with diabetes and/or a host of other ailments and the corpo-food chain has successfully passed their risk onto the public health system.
Diners at Le Circ fawn over the newest taste sensation du-jour, while the science of flavor has turned what most people eat into dog food.
There will never be a lack of cheap food, only inexpensive good food.
I wonder if you are perhaps missing a larger reality though. For the politically and nationally agnostic, the larger forces at work that your family was subjected to was, essentially, industrialists and bankers squeezing wealth/capital in ways that enriched them at the expense of everyone else (the 20-odd million victims).
You appear grateful that obesity is an option for you, without acknowledging that obesity is a reflection of corpo-food systems squeezing profit from every calorie produced through processing and filler substitutes for real nutrition. All under the guise of 'feeding the world'.
e.g. what makes one obese is not the ability to overeat as much as the value of the food itself. Fast-food has little if any caloric value, fat people are not healthy and generally cannot afford to eat more healthy foods. The trending of greater obesity is directly proportional to the mega food-processors increased profits.
If you allow that this thread on food rioting, if and when it happens, will still be a non-event for many living in developed countries; its worth asking who will profit from the suffering of others?
Monsanto, Cargill, ConAgra, et al are currently insinuating themselves in Africa. They are looking to do there what they have done here in the USA. From their perspective they are 'providing food security'; from mine: they are looking for another backyard to shit in.
I found your comment highly offensive, not for your tone of cultural superiority nor for the suggestion of racism that comes with it; but for the sense of entitlement that having your attitude generally confers.
What is sad about your comment is that you are correct only if you acknowledge that your 'culture' was mid-wifed by 200 years of taking what didn't belong to you by a 'culture' whose domainant trait is lying, stealing and cheating to obtain those things they feel entitled to.
The superior culture you extoll is the same one that contributes to making us reviled throughout the world. A culture of 'takers'.
Everything that you claim is 'more conducive' has come, indirectly, at the expense of people elsewhere.
One of the reasons the American public is suffering over resources is that (the elites of) our nation has taken just everything it could from the developing world and is now turning on itself.
You may not be a racist, but remaining blind to the circumstances of your success makes you ignorantly dangerous.
I suggest you wise up and refresh yourself on the real history (and blood-trail) of your wonderful culture.
One might think that would be eVP Bjorn Halvarti, or some such Norweigan name. Perhaps M$ has so fully taken over Nokia that the damn phone might as well be made in the USA!
Hi: Lots of good observations in this thread from both land and water born travelers. But here is a suggestion that didn't come up.
The Great Loop is a 6,000 mile waterway built by the Corps of Engineers to protect U.S. shipping. It's pretty incredible and every year sees sunbirds making the migration from the Great Lakes down to Gulf, hybernating in FL for the winter, then returning north via the Inland Waterway along the eastern seaboard.
Passage is slow, through both rural and urban landscapes. Marinas are welcoming and you can anchor just about anywhere you want. There are associations that support loopers with the logistics. This might be an alternative to boondocking if you like the water. You can even pull a houseboat if you like!
Also, somewhere in this thread mention was made of tumbleweeds. If you are travelling alone and if you can live in a small space this would definately be my choice. Litterally a tiny home. Well insulated, comfortable, small footprint. Very towable.
"...wonder what would happen if an armed group such as the Tea Party staged protests like the OWS..."
I see you missed the 60's:)
s/TEAparty/Panthers|SDS/ or any other flavor of radical group taking it to the streets. The result: 100's of people still languishing in jails, framed on trumped up charges, largely forgotten after decades of lies.
You think the run-of-the-mill hippies who protested didn't get beaten up regularly? Get a long record of charges that followed them into adulthood?
The purpose of the System is to erase long-term memory; of AgentOrange, of DU, of horrendous experiments on the poor. The purpose is to dis-enfranchise the survivors and their stories.
The NYPD are not supermen, our/their system is fragile beyond belief. Hit the tipping point and it all comes down. Take away hope and people will rise to take the heat.
Interesting point there. What I find curious is that for all the protesting nothing is mentioned of the consequences. A followup poster notes w/regard to reputation and an arrest following you like a bad smell, but even more telling is that nobody talks about the immediate cost of bail/bond being $5,000 as the price to play the dissent game.
I've suggested every chance I get to have the protests in front of the precincts! Occupy the police departments! Occupy the courts!
When the cop-shops are surrounded by thousands of protesters, filling their jails to the point of overflowing because they can't get the busses in, can't move people to the courthouse.... the system stops.
That is the place to stop it, not Zucatti park; where the dis-interested look distainfully down upon the unwashed masses w/no fear and only contempt.
"there is no serious risk of starvation, living is comfortable, all but the very poorest can afford food, home and car."
Following your logic: take away those things and revolution becomes a lot more predictable.
So, when food prices climb/soar next year, when inflation cuts out those simple luxuries, when life for the bottom 1/2 becomes the day2day survival currently experienced by the lowest 10%, then you'll see the same street action like in the mid-east, greece, spain, etc....
People do not take to the street to protest abstractions (over-reaching gov) but empty bellies and hopeless futures.
This day is coming and is what the Elites have been preparing for the last 20 years; desserting a ship they never had any alliegance toward in the first place.
The System is broken, it cannot be repaired when profit-motive is the only bottom-line. Thankfully, there are efforts underway to implement a better system once the Elites have left.
The answer is 'nothing'. You have to find the answer for yourself and I suspect it will boil down to finding yourself compelled to act. You will not be able to stop yourself from joining some movement because things for you are just that bad.
But please stop lamenting how hard it is in the US for protesting. If you look at what people in the mid-east, africa, latin america, south asia, are dealing with (i.e. immediate torture and disappearance) your complaints sound only like so much whining.
Can you say reliable, repeatable and with unique, custom results? Just wrap your script and provide \1.... Running mysql queries from the CLI is a good example. Besides the CLI will evolve better than GUI as speech2text becomes more practicable. Can't wait for that day, a Siri for the desktop!
How about: Of all the billions wasted, lost and unaccounted for in our Iraq adventure we just gave 1/2 of that away from the outset?
No plundered antiquities, no civil war, no million refugees upsetting Syria or 100-500K bodies in the ground. No returning vets with TBI's and adjustment problems.
Sometimes giving something away of value is in your best interests.
I'm very comfortable in my belief in one's right to survive, leave a will, exist in a non-hierarchial community, in my anarchism by that definition.
That said, and one's capacity for self-delusion aside or paranoia aside, a bottom-line gets reached when talk stops and the walk ensues.
Ack'ing that direct, individual action serves nothing constructive happens to be my own POV, but maybe I'm just not desperate enough. Surely billions are.
One may torch an SUV, spike or live in a tree, stop a hunt, even strap on a bomb. It takes some bravery and unfortunately lets one's ego get the better of them.
Terrorism may be secret police wisking you away in the night or the random sniping of windows on K street to deter lobbying. It's designed to put fear into those who participate in actions these groups sanction as a collective threat.
Society calls the victims innocent; as if that word absolves them of their decisions that put them where they were. An avoidance mechanism for the choices made every day that are usually self-serving and not w/out blowback. whether its the logger about to cut a millenial tree or a weapons designer testing in a lab. We ultimately choose to follow orders with a disregard for external consequences. They often manifest themselves in a few column inches that was the day with your name on it.
As a society, how do we account for what is done in our name. For Rolling Thunder, spreading global misery to sustain our 'way of life' and bigger, better deals?
I refrain from advocating violence on any scale because it cannot change the System and only demand more hurt. But I also understand the hope of those for something/someone to make hurting stop.
Granted, there's a lot of roadway in VT; hour commutes are average. Fuel costs, heating costs. repairs cost. We need better modes of transport, greater energy efficiencies. Burdens of country living; where most of us live. Nooks-n-Crannies of hillside ranges. But we (try to) rise to the challenges in sensible, renewable, non-desposible ways.
"I had DSL in Vermont since..." True, it was nice to have Adelphia at cable speeds back then, but I still live in a black-hole that Fairplay wired only last summer and has yet to turn on. High hopes and lip service abound. Fortunately hotspots are growing like shrooms in the pastures.
AZ and VT. What a comparison:) Aren't there 19000 firefighters hosing down their woods right now. And a 1/2 empty lake that used to be a wonder to behold? Its a dessert and we're all green. (And we aint got no Aripaio (sp))
" wanna know where the two safest places are..." (shhhhhhh. Move AZ - nice dry climate, crime is down)
"are big producers of..." verry little beyond milk and maple, We are a lot of little producers. People with sore butts and stiff joints, seasonally multi-skilled and rurality challenged. Close-knit is understatement, clannish maybe. FlatlandersVsTownies, UpscaleVsDowntown, love the views but loathe spreading time.
We build and grow shit, the detours from breakdowns and bad-orders that require fixing same to make something out of hardscrabble simplicity is all in a day's work. (and some F-16's overhead)
"people still haven't seen the writing on the wall.." I know this post is day-old and maybe not merit reply; but i get floored by the reality that people see what they want/need to see to keep their shit together. They might call it the bigger picture, our energy future bracing global competition. Supporting the 'special interests' who put everything on the table. DeRegulate(all)
The point of my descriptive prose is that nobody should be positioned under pressure to part with what they own in order to stay afloat/afarm if "bleed em more to make em sell"; we'll give em noisy windfarms and holes in the ground.
The frackers among us play to povertys' tune. They don't feel their mistakes or the ramifications on anyone's health.
Why else would these poisons be allowed to sicken life across the board? Create county-wide dustbowls and 1000's of toxic dumps. This big crap our industrys have taken? Cancer anyone? Diabetes? Aderol, Viagra, speed?
Most VTers are poor, lots have hungry kids and barely enough to go around; we/they've learned community and common sense goes a long way. Transition towns as it were. We live in gores and valleys and woodland hills on wits and yard sales and goodwill as a word. We try to be forebearing, but have the sad violence that stupidity breeds. Don't know about AZ, but i suspect we've got more guns; excluding automatics and RPGs, more retired brass, more WP relocates, per capita, treading softly under the radar, than realized. AZ thinks itself conservative, we're stick to Independent.
"people still haven't seen the writing..." For Sale: Ponies and Roses and BenJerrys IceCream The flowers dried up, your flavor of choice will be chocolate! But our micro-distilleries and breweries are doing fine!
Your post was 'right!...On' and my only hope is that GP is young and lives to be 100 so he/she can look back from the dessertified, nearly extinct, melting, virus-ridden, polluted, rusted out overcrowded horizon, search/. on his postings and wonder in who's counsel they put their trust.
For those who are 'resourceful' and know how, it is also one of the most 'livable'. Given your mindset, I take heart in knowing VT will remain free of perople like you.
As a long-time resident of VT, nearly off-grid, I'll take clean, sweet, H2O over foul-smelling, toxic, contaminating pollutants any day of the week. Idiots on this thread extoll cheaper energy while the water-wars begin and dust-bowls swirl anew.
They talk priorities but really just want new profit centers.
The 'state of mind' it's always been TXvsVT, small and manageable vs bigger, better deal. TX has become a shithole, go VT.
At least here in the good ol' U S of A, Ms Napolitano is redefining the word terrorist to include anyone having a minor beef w/the "System" and our wonderful Dept of Justice, in consort with a congress that has the lowest approval rating in history, pushing hard for 'hacking' to become a crime of terror.
I wouldn't be surprised if someday soon just running Linux and 'non-approved' applications will get you on the 'black-hat', 'no computer for you!, list.
Remind me, who are the good guys again? Because I remember a recent/. story which aluded to the 'netgods of the 70/80's being upset and saying "don't screw w/our creation, or ELSE!"
Maybe they'll become our next action heros, followed by legions of anonymous; wearing grayhats and fawkes' masks. I know I'd rather see them behind the wheel than a hoard of monkey-bots sitting in the glare their RoundUp RPT screens panting 'think of the children (and god knows who else)', deploying their micro keyhole-sats to hover over illegal hot-spots to catch us wankers in the act of sharing our packages; telling us to "get off THEIR lawn".
Hardened criminal murders one person, gets life. Hardened financier destroys lives of thousands, gets an invite to play golf.
Sure, crime pays. The odds of getting punished are long. More for white-collar than street crime. More people have suffered at the hands of bankers than gang-bangers, so what say we put a different 'scum' in the dock and let them plead out (including an admission of guilt).
Would your post still be worded the way it is? If so, then something is seriously wrong with the system and defending it is impossible.
" Unless, of course, you have someone configuring
(and hosting) your node for you"
Like Ubuntu, RH, Slack,.... ?
Seems to me that if a webapp like this was bundled into any distro along with a configuration script that it would be trivial to setup a home node
Well, here is some other stuff i picked up:
If the issue is the blank screen being identical to what you would see if prompted to login - but w/out the login window
what worked for me was to Tick "Lock screen when screensaver is active" in screensaver preferences dialog
This host was running Ubuntu (Bug #150109), but other things to try:
Option "ForceEnablePipeA" "true" # in your xorg.conf:devices section
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Quirks#Force_Pipe_A_Quirk
try nomodeset (disable KMS) and/or vthandoff in grub
run below from a console:
compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
use xset to control DPMS
sleep 1; xset s activate
Or to turn the screensaver off:
sleep 1; xset dpms force off
In a terminal (Applications-->Accessories-->Terminal), type: gconf-editor
Navigate to apps-->gnome-power-manager-->buttons and set lid_ac and/or lid_battery to "nothing" (without the quotes)

Tho I prefer E17 to compiz I have CCM running on a toshiba that had this problem. The only fix (for me) that i found is to enable screen-locking.
It brings up the login dialog and restores the desktop

"I had DSL in Vermont since..." True, it was nice to have Adelphia at cable speeds back then, but I still live in a black-hole that Fairplay wired only last summer and has yet to turn on. High hopes and lip service abound. Fortunately hotspots are growing like shrooms in the pastures.
AZ and VT. What a comparison:) Aren't there 19000
firefighters hosing down their woods right now.
And a 1/2 empty lake that used to be a wonder to behold? Its a dessert and we're all green.
(And we aint got no Aripaio (sp))
" wanna know where the two safest places are..."
(shhhhhhh.
We build and grow shit, the detours from breakdowns and bad-orders that require fixing same to make something out of hardscrabble simplicity
is all in a day's work. (and some F-16's overhead)
"people still haven't seen the writing on the wall.." I know this post is day-old and maybe not merit reply; but i get floored by the reality that
people see what they want/need to see to keep their shit together. They might call it the bigger picture, our energy future bracing global competition. Supporting the 'special interests' who put everything on the table. DeRegulate(all)
The point of my descriptive prose is that nobody should be positioned under pressure to part with what they own in order to stay afloat/afarm if
"bleed em more to make em sell"; we'll give em noisy windfarms and holes in the ground.
"people still haven't seen the writing..."
For Sale: Ponies and Roses and BenJerrys IceCream
The flowers dried up, your flavor of choice will be chocolate! But our micro-distilleries and
breweries are doing fine!
Your post was 'right!...On' and my only hope is that GP is young and lives to be 100 so he/she can look back from the dessertified, nearly extinct, melting, virus-ridden, polluted, rusted out overcrowded horizon, search /. on his postings and wonder in who's counsel they put their trust.
Usenet, Usenet, Usenet, Usenet, Usenet, Usenet...
Damn, I've been wanting to say that for 20 years!
Private Servers, encrypted, with limited newsgroups, Dnews-like.
Many have said that Usenet (i said it again) is the very best distributed model out there. Time to tweak and resurrect it, IMO
"Then, where is the bad guy in this example? The old lady?"
Without crossing genderlines and the 'boy' scout being the only guy the answers is 'nowhere'; unless the little urchin is bipolar maybe.
Otherwise I would like to submit
http://evilladies.com/
say:
http://evilladies.com/serial-killers/dorothea-puente-old-lady-who-killed-men/
as a possible candidate.
Because I remember a recent /. story which aluded to the 'netgods of the 70/80's being upset and saying "don't screw w/our creation, or ELSE!"
