There used to be a short 15 minute programme from the Ontario Mining Commision about what to do if you find blasting caps and/or fuses, first they show you how each type of cap/fuse can explode (and why its dangerous) and then they tell you to not touch them and go find your local OPP or RCMP officer and let them deal with it. Not only did they show you exactly what each type of cap/fuse looked like (both in diagram form and in real life) but they actually showed you how to set them off.

However, most of mans greatest discoveries are based on or related to the crazy few who devote their lives to false causes. Would I been able to communicate this response to you if someone hadn't wasted their lives on trying to figure out the details of magnetics (which, in turn, lead to the development of electricity and computers)?

Don't try this stuff at home ... or in the cockpit, or the operating room, please.

Made me think of a crappy film I saw in Grade 8, basically it was three mini-stories that revolved around computers (it was made around 1983 or so). One of the stories centered around this guy in a bad haircut who owned a modem and apparently was a hacker of sorts. Basically the caracter writes a virus and sends it to his friend, and then his friend (unwittingly) sends it to more of his friends, etc, etc (this is all shown in that multiple boxes style like the beginning of "The Brady Bunch"). At the receiving end of all this is a hospital, and for some reason or another the patient records get corrupted by the virus (or something like that) and they can't find out what drugs this one guy is allergic to. And the movie ends with some words of wisdom. Has anyone else seen, or remeber seeing this stupid movie?

There was once a time when I could have just bought the darned VHS cassettes when they came out in Nihon. When I went out to buy my DVD player last year I was faced with a choice:
    • Buy a DVD player Regionally coded for Japan and get all the new anime (as is my wont)
    • Buy a DVD player regionally coded for North America so I could get regular movies as they are released here.

I ended up buying one coded for North America, why are DVD players regionally coded anyway? It's not like I'm going to dub hundreds of copies and sell them overseas (which I could do, rather cheaply I might add, with existing VHS). I would like to buy a DVD player that does not check regional coding, does such a device exist?

If anyone out there knows where I could get a high quality DVD player that can 'ignore' regional coding, please let me know...

  16. Fusion = Thermal Pollution on On Asteroid Mining · · Score: 1
One of the biggest oversights that most people make about cold fusion is that is a non-polluting energy source, this is wrong of course. It stands to reason that if fusion energy became a cheap and viable energy source the amount of industry (worldwide) would increase. All sorts of new machines and technologies would evolve and a lot more thermal (heat, light) energy would be released into the atmosphere. The big environmental worry right now about using fossil fuels (forget the solid waste for now) as an energy source is that they are a major contributing factor to the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect raises the temperature of the biosphere, if fusion is allowed rampant growth the end result would be the same.

Am I saying "don't use fusion", of course not, it's the logical step for mankind's future energy needs. But in the future, when someone mentions that fusion is a non-polluting energy source you can tell them its wrong.

I ask any of you this: Would you like to live in a world where products and services are all minor variants of each other? Where everyone copies everyone else?

This is how the music industry works, last year a band had a Top 40 hit that used a voice modulator (the thoroughly annoying "Blue" song for instance), soon all the pop bands were using it for no other reason than one band made a hit single with it. No one innovated, no new sounds were created to compete with this song, the pop stations were essentially playing several different versions of the same song. Was anything innovated? No. Did music change for the better? Hell No.

The point to all this is, the copyright system while "archaic" and "outdated" made the USA into the financial juggarnaut it is today by creating a market where the status quo makes no money and innovation is rewarded!
