Hopefully the non-planetologists (or whatever they're called) in the IAU who are sick of the topic will just vote in favor of the proposal and put an end to this. Those who study planetary science and want to nitpick for the rest of their lives are probably outnumbered. What I'd like to see is an actual name for Xena (it's just a nickname currently, it's still technically named 2003 UB313). It should not be called Xena.

Look at these animations. Second from the left is Pluto and Charon. That's why they're both planets. The definition being proposed is rather elegant, I think. It leaves it up to gravity to determine what a planet is, and catches special cases like Pluto and Ceres rather nicely too. You have your 8 classical planets in nice orbits, you have your N plutons in crazy orbits, and you have your really small dwarf planets like Ceres that never quite made it.

Heh, I would've preferred Informative. In any case, yes, the names of these sites are stupid. However, my point was that sites like YouTube that restrict their searches to themselves are inferior to those that can search through many dozens of video sites. They free up people to pick the most user-friendly site to upload to, rather than which is the most "popular", and still get lots of views.

People will debate Pluto's class until the end of the solar system. This is not a new story, in the sense that this is not the first time Pluto's status has been discussed. I think it should just be grandfathered in, if anything. Plus we have a bunch of other objects out there that could be considered planets too. Sedna, Xena, Quaoar, Varuna, Ixion... what do we do with those?

This Paul Thurrott guy is a true genius in getting the ADD-ridden Apple-zealots giddy.
I can't really imagine why. What he said was pretty tame, and even said he was rooting for Leopard. He just didn't like the attitude, which is understandable, although I think he misinterpreted the intent. The rest of the stuff is a fairly complete list of the new stuff shown in the keynote. But considering he wasn't privy to any of the closed door sessions for developers where a lot of other stuff was shown off, he's not all that able to make a complete judgement. The developers I've talked to and information I've heard through 3rd parties leads me to believe that things are better than they seem just from watching the keynote.

The point of security is to simply make it as hard as possible, hopefully hard enough so that they'll go after somebody easier, or hard enough so that it the benefits of breaking in are outweighed by the costs to do so.

Well it's not so bad. He made some valid points, the keynote was relatively sparce in information. I'll grant you the iPod battery thing, although I've never had any problems personally with mine (mine being plural). However, I've only heard of one iMac catching on fire years ago (one of the lampshades, I think), but no laptop fires. The only laptop fires I've heard about lately were Dells. I have no idea where you came up with motherboard defects either. Overall Apple's problems have been largely cosmetic of late.

The problems I've had were Harddrive (IBM made it), and graphics card (nVidia made it). Oh, and I had lots of trouble with Apple printers, back when they made printers. And there was the one Performa with the clogged up fan leading to a power unit overheat and failure, but I blame myself for never dusting the poor thing. In any case, I've been a Mac user for a very long time, and haven't had many hardware problems at all. I've been a Gen 1 user more than once too. Of course this is anecdotal, but so are many of the reports everyone else is reporting problems in. I really think it's just Apple's high profile that makes them a target. Apple is arrogant, a lot of their customers are arrogant (arguably for a reason), and people who don't use their products love to jump on every little problem they can find.
