I run into this same issue on so many of my clients' computers. I end up removing Norton as it was either expired or somehow broken. At least half the time the damn thing doesn't uninstall. This is such a pervasive issue that Norton had to write a removal (SymNRT) to clean up where their uninstaller failed. Eventually they should move that tool to this page.

  4. Re:CD burning on Xandros Releases Open Circulation Edition · · Score: 2, Informative

I would imagine you could just remove whichever cd recording package they're using and install a non-crippled version or use a different package completely.

Is it possible to cripple the drivers for a cd-rw? If that's the case, I would imagine snagging your own drivers would circumvent this as well.

  5. Re:Correction on Xandros Releases Open Circulation Edition · · Score: 1, Offtopic

'Xandros' is a singular noun. While there may be many people in the company, the company itself is a singular noun, therefore 'has' is appropriate.

I think there may have been miscommunication there. They probably don't care (also, can't and won't know) if you have your own broadband router eating only one of their IP's and using NAT to serve numerous computers. But from what you say above it seems that you're eating 5 of their ips and they want you to pay for each one. It sounds like their sales people should have made the clear instead of using the simple answer of "sure, that's fine."

  8. Re:Interface on The Gimp from the Eyes of a Photoshop User · · Score: 1

I found this very situation when I had started out with Photoshop. It seemed easy enough to learn that I played with some of the obvious features and was impressed but it felt more like a clean, bloated version of Paintbrush. After going through a few tutorials that actually explained how the different features work I understood that Photoshop was more than a toy but a really serious tool. I've found the exact same situation in using Gimp. The script-fu buttons and such are fun to play with, but to do some real work going through a number of tutorials helps tremendously. I still find myself looking for Photoshop tools while I'm using Gimp but the learning curve is worth it for my purposes. I'm not a professional graphic designer and the wife won't let me justify $600 for Photoshop.

Doesn't look terrible. I wouldn't mind having an inexpensive luggable desktop myself. Dragging my machine into my living room when I'm watching TV would help me pretend to get that much more work done.

I can happily say that the company I work for is an answering service that will never outsource to India. In fact, one of the owners had me proof a letter she wrote to Marshall Fields' et all to discontinue her service as she was upset to find out their customer service was outsourced to New Delhi.

How do dupes like this make it to the front page anyway? Do the mods not read slashdot on a daily basis as well? Great article and all, but I don't think it needs to induce that sinking feeling of deja vu...
