Why don't they store the shuttle under some kind of solid covering that, on launch day, will open like a dome on a sport field? Or from some form of underground "silo"? It would help protect the shuttle, or, in the future, whatever they are using to go to space. They could keep it under a swimming pool! And when they want to launch it, the pool could just slide out of the way!
How is it any worse than entering a PIN? You'd just authenticate before you started driving.
The only (realistic) way I can think of authenticating hands-free while driving would be voice, and I don't think it's quite there yet. I can't see some businessman doing 95 while screaming "Unlock!" at his phone repeatedly being much safer.
What about hardware and software settings - does everyone use the same gear and settings in tournaments? It's really amazing what kind of a difference your mouse can make.
I can't think of many sports where everyone uses the exact same equipment. Tennis players all have their own rackets, runners their own shoes, and so on.

The only reason I bought the DVD boxset of Firefly, went to see Serenity, and bought the DVD as soon as it came out is because a friend linked me to some downloads of the episodes. I'd never have seen it if he hadn't.
