This would be a solution. The "stealth mode" doesn't send back the real ip address. So, if we try their fake ip address when we do a verification packet, we will see it is fake. If they decide to actually send a their real ip address, then they you can then automatically have your client ignore any subsequent replies from their server. This would effectively mess up the stealth mode operation. Remember that stealth mode is used for the spam and it is supposed to hide the server so people won't get pissed off and crack their system and shut them down.

Where are these bugs coming from? When you say there are 37 bugs in Win2000, it means that there are 37 bugs in the OS. They are usually security bugs. Did Moody both to find out what kind of bugs were seen in the 47 Linux bugs. Were they 47 security bugs or bugs that did other things? Everytime I get the stupid critical update message for Win98, it is a security bug. And, it is in IE which is not an optional install. Most of the security bugs that I have seen with Red Hat Linux deal with something like wu-ftpd or some weird apache module which I don't install anyway so my system doesn't have the bug.

And what the hell does the number of users compared to the number of bugs tell you anyway?

  5. Silly NetPD on Napster Bans Metallica Fans · · Score: 3

Metallica is stupid and so is anyone who tries to fight this. I think most users will understand that Napster's arm was twisted to make them ban users. And the users will just create new accounts. However, Metallica has just pissed off 300,000+ fans. Think those people will EVER buy a Metallica CD now. At least before, people could have liked the MP3 and then purchased a CD. Metallica has just shot themselves in the face and made their record sales worse.

NetPD is not too smart either. When the CTO was interviewed, he wouldn't even give a simple idea on how it worked other than the metaphor that it is like 5,000 humans in a room searching for the info. Which means his little plan will fail. I think most people know that if your algorithm is so secret that you can't tell anyone, then you are doomed. I give that software maybe a month (that's generous too) before someone gets a copy, disassembles it, and writes a patch for Napster. Then, I would like to see where NetPD sees it's sales. Get a clue guys, there is nothing any company can do to stop MP3 because there is a HUGE wave of millions of people behind it with a combined force that is greater than an company could ever mass. Look what happend to DVD and their secret algorithm.

How many people out there know a person who is at least 100 years old or older. Weren't they born in the 1800s? So, why doesn't the social security computers shut down everytime they spit out a check for someone born in '99 (1899)? Or why doesn't anything happen to the various other computers that have to deal with the birth dates of these older people. Think how many systems out there must have the birthdates of century old people yet they never break. As soon as someone can answer this, I will believe in a world apocalypse in 2000.

The point of the matter here is the word freedom. Linus himself has even said that the Free in Free Software also means Freedom. Communism does not support freedom. All of the nice growing pools and stuff don't count for much against that. Perhaps people have forgotten what all of this is about. People volunteer for this. If Alax Cox writes a SCSI driver, I have the freedom to choose to help with that or go write something else, or even write my own SCSI driver. In communism, you are told what you will do. No freedom there. Just because people don't usually ask for money, that doesn't make it communism.

I don't think so. Free sofware is about freedom. Many companies make a good bit of money off of free software in a totally democractic way. Free Software just makes sure that others have the freedom to do what they want with it. It is also the freedom of information that is sought by free software. If it wasn't for open source software, what would young computer scientists look to for real world examples. Freedom of information and freedom to customize what you own doesn't sound like a communistic ideal. In fact, the last I checked, freedom of information was something communism tried to suffocate. Plus, it is voluntary. When was the last time a communist dictator politely asked the people if he could volunteer to run their lives?

It would be easier and cheaper than having to make any silly deals with Microsoft. I don't see the NSA making deals with any other encryption based products. I don't think there are any back doors in PGP or GPG that allow them to break any cipher. The NSA will simply pick you up, take you to their place, and force the private key out of you. It is probably more fun that way anyway. I believe Bruce is right. The man knows what he is talking about.
