Same here with the phone call. For some reason, their cd crashed on IE6 and win98. It took a little longer, but the process went pretty smoothly. I had to change the networking and spent about 1 hour changing settings on my WRT-54G, but all worked really well.
I just installed Comcast Highspeed in Pgh on a Win 98 box. IE was only need for the installation setup. It crashed - badly. The installer was able to push the info to the modem via a 1/2 hour phone call to the home office.
Beyond that, I use a WRT-54G for wireless throughout the house and it works fine with a variety of OS's. No need to pay extra for multiple PCs
NOTE: The WRT-54G setup is the key which took an additional 1/2 hour to setup after the installer left. DO NOT USE MAC CLONING - Its the wrong approach.
I agree with your conclusions and would like to add the following insight. Whether or not a law is broken fairly easy to distinguish. Driving faster than the speed limit is speeding which is breaking the law.
However, just because a law is broken does not mean a crime has been committed, nor that the person who broke the law should be charged with breaking that law. They can be charged rather than must be charged
Consider two cases of J-Walking where one causes an accident and the other occurs without incident. In all likelihood, the person that caused an accident would be charged with J-Walking and the other would not have charges brought.
This gives a lot of leeway, and potential abuse of power, to the persecuters in our litigation systems. It also gives them the ability to bring, and subsequently drop, alot of charges in exchange for a plea agreement which basically means they own your ass.
Who were the other players in the Enron game? Well if you recall, our congress critters made a stink for a little bit about an investigation, then it quietly went away. Why - they quickly found that members of both parties were a little too close to the flame. I recall Robert Rubin at Citibank in NY - Former Treasury secretary - sought to have the notification delayed a day or so. Citibank lost over 800 Million when Enron collapsed. It's not likely congress critters or even the president - no, the people that get you 25 years then kill you before you even get a chance to report to prison buy and sell congress critters with their pocket change. A good place to start would be the Forbes 400 list. The other place is mob entities (US, Russian, etc) that can suggest to judges and persecuters that they really should take a hard line - lest the news media find some interesting information / photos / etc.
Yeah, I know - conspiracy theorist - I really need a more challenging career.
Kumar got such a long sentence because the wrong people got screwed.
In all likelihood, there were some very influential people that were aware of their shenanigans, but got blindsided by the downfall.
These people expect prior notice so they can quietly withdraw their funds and leave the little guy to get the shaft. The game is carefully orchestrated and - if you don't play by the rules - you get 12 years in the pokey.
The uber rich do not lose money on theirinvestments. If they do, heads roll!
For the rest of us, watching M$ is entertaining. They put themselves on a pedestal as an innovator and market leader and yet have consistently pushed substandard crap out the door, using their monopoly position to force piss-poor upgrades upon the user base.
The humour in all of this is that Vista really doesn't contain significant feature improvements - M$ does not improve their products. Rather, it is a blatant effort to bend the user over and drive it home. Refer to WGA, EULA changes, and added DRM - that's the new significant improvement.
Sure, they copy apple and Firefox and add some bloated eye candy as incentive to Jove average user, but most of us can see right through their Aero crap.
Most significantly, they set their own schedule and blew the Christmas season. There are a whole lot of vendors that must work in synchronization to ship this product at a set time. Miss the Christmas season (Beginning Nov 30th) and you miss a hell of a lot of sales!
Developers of FireFox have done an excellent job. Day one I installed the Cat Thief Mostly Crystal theme and set the necessary options to disable prefetch - (Still on dial-up here). Complete setup took less than 1/2 hour to find all information, install, and configure the 2.0 setup. Useability has improved nicely. I have seen one freeze which required me to kill the task - Java related I think. The entire session restored nicely. All in all the update is really appreciated and I would recommend it to all Mozilla or FireFox 1.5.x users.
RTFA - Although DARPA has pulled the award, the current legislation does not bar awards. It moves the authorization level up one position above the DARPA director.
All they now have to do is get permission from their boss.
It appears they have chosen the ignorant route and - instead of getting requested authorization - simply claim they are not allowed
Whomever creates the crack of the century and turns the good cop bad, Please PLEASE be patient. Don't just send out the bots 2 days after Vista's launch, give Vista a chance to permeate the bowels of the gulible and self opressed - Then - and ONLY THEN can the bots be launched, creating a wondrous show for the rest of use to enjoy.
Microsoft has long been due the fruits of their incidious labor and it is only just that they reap the true rewards.
Its easier for others to use M$ format than for M$ to implement anyone's format - for anything
If others try to implement M$ format, there will be some bugs - they will be behind the curve. Better for M$ to be "Innovating" out in front
M$ can verify the images to make sure you've licensed all virtual OS images because they control the machine and the data format. As they've given away the VM, why use a competitor's product? Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player - Any of those ring a bell? Media player is just a platform for DRM and control!
Do you REALLY expect M$ to PROPERLY disclose a file format or API - Get real - anyone remember their XML doc format -
Even if they do disclose the data format - Do you REALLY expect them to follow their own specs? The only images that will reliably work will be MS images
Now M$ can sell you HDD images tailored for your Specific requirements - no need for you to own those nasty installation CDs
Seriously - Cable introduced many more channels and childrens programming creating what we know today as the cable baby sitter. This resulted in longer viewing times and child oriented visualizations - think Japanese anime rather than Sesame Seed Street.
I believe this may be tied to the effect on the brain of the visual stimulation in conjunction with significantly prolonged exposure.
So what do we do with all the lawsuits alledging vaccines are responsible for increased autism rates? --- Oops.
We bought a Brother HL2040 Mono laser for about $100 with shipping. I think the cartridge that comes with the printer is rated at 1000-1500 sheets (don't specifically remember) and the replacement $50 toner cartridge is rated at 2500 pages. Thats about 10 cents a page for the printer and initial cartridge and 2 cents a page for the replacement cartridge. Plus the toner doesn't dry out!!! Printing 300+ pages was completed in less than 1/2 hour. Good deal so far!
I've often read that European laws offer their citizens greater protection than the US. My thinking is that if you could show any form of malice or harmful intent from the name squatter that that person could be held for a criminal act.
If we suppose that Virtual PC was even a marginally profitable company, why would M$ actually damage what was previous competent company...
Consider the following - Microsoft buys company - Integrates part of Virtual PC to bolster server capability - Gives away Virtual PC - Claims MAC changes are just too hard
This has NOTHING to do with Virtual PC. If M$ hadn't bought them, I'm sure they would have managed to keep up with the MAC changes considering the number of changes M$ makes to its OS and the reliability of their APIS.
M$ bought Virtual PC to they could integrate their licensing into the server product! Thats the only apparent reason! The company on its own - without M$ could have done just fine. It may not have been tops, but it was a good product!
It is a well known fact (by me - and someone named Steve) that Thurrott isn't even a human - he is an imaginary writer created by the M$ marketing department - just go to Getty images and search for Shill - you'll find 100's of pictures just like his. Post one of them on a website and pretend to be objective.
and this isn't the first article of his which has been critical of Microsoft and Vista
Did you read about his problems with WGA? A week later he remembered that it may not have been on the up and up when he bought it.
As a shill, you sometimes need to pretend to be on the other side to maintain your credibility
Yes! I listen to a lot of CDs in my car - and it plays CDs only - and NO, i'm not upgrading the f'ing radio just so I can listen to the same thing available on CD. My "newer" car may play MP3's, but Its just as easy to create a mix on the computer and burn it to a music CD.
My mom on the other hand does not yet have a computer and there is no way in hell you are going to convince her to replace her car stereo. If it doesn't play in the car, ITS BROKEN.
Music DVDs are great - but they already have them - AC/DC Live at Donnington - Pink Floyd's Pulse, etc - Stuff the extra features on those! We don't need a "new" format!
Wow - this guy sure shed his morals since leaving the Whitehouse. I wonder where and from whom he learned to lie so well. yes, I realize the other side is no better!
As many have stated - we already pay for the infrastructure. Its just passed on to us from the ISP.
My thoughts exactly. Its bad enough being grilled on every fault that occurs in M$ products, but calling his creations a piece of crap goes too far! His sister doesn't trust him or believe in him. This is an attack on the heart of his being. As a coworker once said - It is very difficult to convince people you have prevented certain distaster. Once she has had the opportunity to experience disaster for herself, then maybe she will begin to see some value in her brother's skills, patience, and thoughtfulness. Until then, send her to the Geek Squad!
From what I've seen, the requirements ask you to document what you do as a process and illustrate that you follow the process. The problem is that the process becomes overarching to address the worst case. Therefore, many steps can be skipped.
Here's an example, you produce a web server - You need to build your software - document how you do that. You need to package your software - document how to do that. Deploy on a test server - document that process too. Setup a test server - document that. How do you test the software? Document that. Now put the documents in order.
There are three reasons for this: 1) That a new employee or subordinate can take over a task and perform it properly. 2) A task may be so complex that it is difficult to perform it twice in exactly the same way especially if it is only done every 6 months. 3) Your job can be outsourced.
Have no fear, your value is in your solutions, not in how repetitive or mundane processes are performed.
Sorry - Our grandparents built the hoover dam, sent astronauts to the moon, and created computer systems and languages - all without computers in schools. Advocates seem to think this is the magic wand that will make the school critters smart. How about homework.
I do think there are a few subjects where the ability to illustrate is extremely important convey a concept or situation. However, the idea that each child should have a laptop is complete and total bullshit!
Our children are now dumber per dollar spent on education than many less wealthy countries!
If its a very small part of a larger program, then look for some good examples and try to trudge through getting it to work. Otherwise, start writing code and examine the visual output of the screen. Look for algorithms and methods for producing the output you want. When you begin to understand them, you can integrate the concepts into your solution.
Unfortunately, even if you have an API, you still have to understand what it does and how to interact with it. Many people believe that modular programming simply means using code alrealy written. This is a false premise as there is no substitute for some degree of understanding.
In the end, you may wish to use a public library because it is highly accurate, optimized, well researched, or portable, but by that time you will have the knowledge to understand why you are selecting the particular library.
Exactly. Microsoft is a CONVICTED MONOPOLY that uses its monopoly position to suppress / prevent competition. One of their methods has long been to extend and abstract standard protocols. In the server / desktop space, they are trying to leverage the desktop monopoly into a server monopoly by hiding protocols needed for authentication, data storage, etc. Thus the EU commission has ruled that M$ must publish the protocol necessary to communicate with the desktop systems. This is due to the fact that M$ created / stole / modified / extended the desktop communication protocols!
What will it take to bribe / suppress / crush these people in Europe.
I think this is similar to the CoolMax 309 (310s are 5 1/4 and have a 40mm fan). Its more expensive than other enclosures, but they've slipped an 80mm fan under the drive for cooling. Metal case also helps with the head. Overall an Excellent case and well worth it. Some complain about the wall wart power limits, but I prefer the minijack power plug to modified PS2 power plug any day. As an aside, I have a Metal Gear which performs exceptionally well.

So what happened to the game code? Was the code bought by other companies or did it simply become orphan code?
Has anyone ever attempted to get some of these games publicly released so they could be ported to current systems?
