I think most of Slashdot, with the possible exception of some rabid something or others, would agree you. I know I do, its how how I try to live my life, though I used to get a bit preachy about trying to convince people to switch to Linux when they start complaining about Windows.
Now I just get a very smug smirk on my face as I think about all my systems running Linux trouble free for the last 5 years and keep my peace.
Nothing in the article or comments tries to "justify" copyright infringement, at least not most of them.
And their is nothing hypocritical about getting up in arms when someone takes GPL code that is meant, and required, to be freely distributed to anyone and adds it to their product without following the terms of the GPL. A copyright violation in itself.
If there are any hypocrites in this its the RIAA, they scream about how much money the artist is loosing but at the same time use all sorts of accounting slight of hand to deprive the very same artist's of that same money.
Microsoft will die the death (or at least dominant market share) of a thousand cuts. Apple, Android, Linux, Chrome, each cut is small but they will add up. MS could still pull it together but it would require a restructuring of epic messure.
Looking back it might have been a good thing if the DOJ had split the company up into three entities.
Considering that the Taliban, and other extremist groups (all religions) tend to restrict the education of their followers to just enough to follow the dictates of their leaders it is obvious that this validates the adage "Those who do not learn from History are doomed to repeat it".
Didn't like the "wrap up" in "Foundation and Empire" much but the original books are great, and it did all tie together well.
I noticed the signs back in the 80's, I could see the US was near its peak and have been watching its slow glide down. Just like every "Great Nation" since earliest history, Aztec, Inca, Greek, Nubia, Mesopotamia, Babylon, etc., etc..
Good point, but considering that the electronics are alerady radiation hardened against gamma ray, alpha particles and cosmic rays of much higher power I would really be surprised if much extra shielding would be needed. From another article I came across after posting it mentions that by selecting the right isotope its possible to get useful power and only need a.5cm lead shield for it to be safe around people. Since it would be in space you might be able to just shield the probe side of the RPG.
I'm sure that given some thought a workable solution could be found. I'd still like to know if anyone has heard of any work being done or did it get buried for some reason?
Maybe they could use a Radioisotope Photoelectric Generator instead, at least for power, and save the Pu238 just for heating. From my understanding of it, limited since the only article (from 1981) I've ever read about it was the one I linked to, a RPG can use any gamma ray emitting isotope and will have full power for a period equal the half-life of the isotope used. And IIRC there are still several reactors in the US that can generate isotopes.
Never heard anything more about it, anyone else know more?
Selective breeding would never be able to add genes from a Brazil nut to soybeans.
But they GM'ed Genes from a Brazil nut into a soybean, and created a soybean that could kill someone violently allergic to Brazil nuts. Never made it to market but you should keep in mind that many of the GM'ed plants are being engineered with toxins to keep bug from eating them, toxins that are not very good for humans either. Sure the levels are so low that its safe, of course that is what they said about things like DDT and Agent Orange.
The issue is two fold, first, information about what foods are GM'ed or not is being kept from the public so they can't make informed free choices. Second, there is insufficient, peer reviewed, unbiased research into what the effects of GM'ed plants/foods are. There are already situations of the Roundup Ready gene jumping to other related plants, monarch butterfly caterpillars having a 50% mortality rate when eating milkweed dusted with pollen from corn GM'ed to include Bt toxin.
More research is needed, but until that research shows solid evidence of the safety or danger of GM'ed foods then people should be able to choose whether or not they eat them. But firms like Monsanto actively block efforts to label foods and perform research, which makes me wonder why. After all, if they have nothing to hide they have nothing to fear.

OK, I walked into that one:)
I've been using Debian for over 5 years so I know apt-get, but what about games/apps that aren't in the repos's? I've got a bunch of games, some native others WINE, on my system and while some of them where downloads from the repo's most came on a CD/DVD.
Or are you a total FOSS purist and only use what is in the repo's? If that is the case I bow to your dedication.
Doesn't even need to be an embedded version of Linux. Most kiosks (ones I've dealt with at least) are just desktop systems in a custom enclosure. You could throw Debian on them and have a solid base to build your app on.
I've got 4 USB thumb drives and an SD card with R-O switches sitting in my desk drawer. They do exist, but its cheaper for manufactures to skip the switch.
Just be sure to put a time delay before virus activation, say a couple of weeks. Makes it harder for them to ID you via infection time/store video log. Just have it infect/spread for awhile before it goes fully active. Another thought, instead of porn/extreme pics keep the images benign, birds, sunsets, babes/guys in swimsuits, etc., makes it harder for the vic to claim its not their photo.
Maybe you should check it out again before making disparaging comments about it.
Just last night I was working on a multi-layered composite image for some cover art and it was working great. Not quite sure what you mean by "fine control of selections", with GIMP I can select and position image elements down to 1 pixel resolution without a problem.
Since I've never used Photoshop I'll refrain from making comparisons about it, other than for someone who can't afford it, doesn't want to pirate it or can't run it since they use Linux anyway it might be worth their time try using GIMP.
When it sounds, acts and looks like Cortana (from Halo 2 preferably) I'll think about it.

As a wise man once said - let them live.
I'll leave them alone to believe whatever they want, as long as they do the same for me.
Its not what the facts they believe that is the issue, its their insistence that everyone else follow their Dogma as well.

I am going to hell now.
Would you save a seat by the Lava pit for me? I should be along shortly.

Screw that!

Don't forget "Box".
Talk about multipurpose!. A plane, space ship, mansion, helicopter, fort, sub, car, truck, tank (with Stick as main gun), etc., etc..
The scary part is there are people who would say that and not be joking ...
You are joking right?
Right?

Sorry, forgot to link to the info about the Brazil/soybean.

Citation please.
It sounds like something they would do, and if true I would definitely like to read up on it.
Actually it was DuPont that had the "better living through chemistry" tag line.
Not that either has shown much concern for the environment unless it was forced on them by regulation.

How do you install software?
Thanks for the heads up on the feature. I just looked it up, looks like something that might be useful to the stuff I do.
Have a good one.
