I never said that the "gurus" on the Ubuntu forums weren't asses, all I did was point out that everything you criticized was unrelated to Ubuntu, and that that might be the reason any posts relating to NFS, etc., might have been removed.
In criticizing something it is generally a good idea to be sure that the issues you point out are indeed part of what you are commenting on.
Funny how all the things you mention are NOT directly Ubuntu projects, but have their own separate websites and forums to help people with. Maybe the reason your posts went MIA was because they where on the wrong site.
Ah, but that asks the question of "Are there safeties?", and if so, on what, total firing time against a target or to prevent overheat of critical systems.
I keep forgetting you can say "fuck" on/. and not get my post deleted by the moderators.
So I use "fsck", gets the point across to most *NIX admins. In case your curious it also stands for "File System Check", which most Windows users have never heard of.
I've heard several serious climatologists dispute the level of impact Humans have had on the climate, they don't deny that its changing or that we need to do something asap, they just question the views held by some that its all caused by Humans and propose that it is a combination of natural and Human causes.
I was not belittling the seriousness, if I seem to be trying to "stay friends with both sides" it was because long experience has shown that the more direct you challenge someones views the less likely they are to listen to your information. And I would rather my post get modded "interesting" than "Flamebait" or "Troll", which I guarantee would be more the case if I decided to skip the diplomacy. You don't get people to co-operate or change their views by making a full attack on their views with your first statement.
As Sun Tzu said, if you have to use force to accomplish your goals then you have failed as a leader.
My personnel take on Global Climate Change; Humans have royally Fucked up the Planet and its too late to really do anything but try to survive, and even at that I think we will fail as a civilization, possibly as a species as well.
Actually if you want to get technical the Earths atmosphere extends beyond the Moon, its just so thin at that point that the Oxygen/Nitrogen atoms are in distinct orbits.
The wax covering would be a good analogy for the part that really impacts us though, its where all the smog concentrations are around cities.
And you are so on it with the Sci-Fi comment, all the bad science they have really messes with general perception of reality.
I've been 99% Pure Linux for the last 5 years, I keep a XP virtual machine on my systems for a couple of games I play at bi-weekly LAN parties but even with those I'm able to use WINE more and more. Its been months since I even started a VM.
There are a growing number of people who don't want to change to Vista/7 and are looking for alternatives, and they aren't gamers. Just a few weeks ago I did a consulting gig where I ended up installing Linux (Debian/KDE full desktop package, I know, could have used Kubuntu) because it did what she wanted it to do, Internet/email, word processing, and photo editing, last time I talked to her she was very happy with it all.
I think the Game companies will be among the last to support Linux, Gamers are just too small a market to matter compared to the non-gamers. The people like my client, who just want to browse the web and other basic things will be where the real market growth is for some time, then places like Blizzard will see a nice sized chunk of market that they are not in and re-think what platforms they support.
As you point out the forced transition to Windows 7 will accelerate the uptake of Linux systems, just like it has with Macs. People are looking for alternatives but they don't like change and will avoid it until the have to make the move.
Yep. And I had another number wrong. its should have been 90% of the atmosphere is within *7km* of the surface not 50km. But as you point out almost everything that affects life is within 5km.
After I hit submit I found a site that made a really easy analogy.
If the Earth was the size of an apple (the fruit) the atmosphere would have the same thickness as the peel at that scale.
That really puts it into a perspective people can wrap their head around with a bit less effort.
Please, if your using a TLA add a link so those of us who are not into whatever it is your talking about can find out what the Fsck your talking about.
Not officially, I just checked Blizzard's web site and there is no mention of Linux using their search.
WoW does run on WINE quit well but apparently not as an "approved by Blizzard" option, so if you have a problem with the game your on your own.
A consoling fact is that the market share of Linux is growing, its only a mater of time till there are more companies writing their applications for it. Just look back at how Mac's used to be shunned, now they have a wide range of application and games available for the platform.
Soldiers may not be a "gang of murderers" but they are trained killers who are conditioned to follow orders without question and kill without thinking when ordered to do so.
And I would also point out that recent History is filled with cases where military units did act like a "gang of murderers" in regard to unarmed civilians. Kent State and Me Lie to name a couple off the top of my head.
Also, in case 1 of your example by knowingly firing on unarmed civilians it would be considered a war crime.
In case 2 you assume the crowd peacefully disperses, not going to happen, as soon as this thing is seen the demonstrators will attack the military forces with anything they can get their hands on, and those that don't will now be sympathetic to the "enemy", likely it will become a great recruitment event for the "enemy".
I would prefer Case 3: The military units withdraw from the area of the protest and go after the "enemy" another day.
1. It was tested, under controlled conditions, by experienced engineers who only turned the thing on long enough to test it. What happens when you get some sadistic grunt on the trigger who just holds the fire button down?
2. Cataract surgery is out patient in areas with the tech and for people with the money for it. What about in some town in Iraq or Afghanistan, or the back waters of Louisiana, where they don't even have indoor plumbing?
That said I think all you points however are dead on. Technically I don't think this device is covered by that section of the Geneva C's since it was not specifically made to cause blindness. I do however think that how it may be used later could be considered a war crime, like handcuffing somebody to the side of a building and zapping them until they talk, or die from shock.
Isn't deploying a weapon that causes blindness is against the Geneva Conventions?
Oh, wait, I forgot no one pays attention to those any more unless it is their citizens that are being mistreated by a foreign power, and even then its OK if a government does it to their own people.
Ever wonder how a microwave oven keeps itself from cooking anything outside it even though it has a window?
The trick is the perforated metal panel in the window. The spacing and size of the holes are such that the microwaves reflect off the the surface as if it was a solid sheet, at least for the frequency of microwaves the oven generates.
I would think that it would not be hard to work out what size mesh would be needed to shield a persons eye's, or full face (body?) from this system.
The ADS may turn out to be one of those Hi-tech devices that can be defeated by very low tech methods, like the $50,000+ radar guided missiles that can get distracted by a couple of shredded $.50 Mylar blanket.
Also makes me wonder how well a shield made out of plywood and heavy aluminum foil would work, hell a little extra work to give it the right curve and you might be able to send the beam back at the soldiers behind the thing.
Of one thing I am certain, this thing is not going to be as effective as they hope, and cheap effective counter measures will be found.
A factor you are failing to consider. Homosexual marriages may be "new" but long term monogamous Homosexual relationships are not, and they have been around far longer that most people give them credit for.
The "Sanctity" of marriage has nothing to do with the sex of the participants, it is about the commitment to stay together, to pledge oneself to another for all time. Where the sanctity is lost is when one or both participants decide that the vows they made, sworn before all that they hold sacred, are not worth the effort and sacrifice needed to keep them.
I have known many Homosexual couples who have been together, and faithful to each other, for 20+ years. How is that level of commitment any different than that shown in a "Traditional" marriage that has lasted the same amount of time?
Also, the national divorce rate hit 50% long before the USA started its decline in technological leadership.
The complete removal of mosquitoes would be nice but there would be add on effects.
Many other animals (humming birds and Dragonflies to name two) eat mosquitoes. If mosquitoes get wiped out it would likely cause problems for those other species, sure most of them would just eat more of the other insects in their diet but then those might get pushed into extinction which would further impact the predators. And a few of those that rely near exclusively on mosquitoes might be more important to human survival than we currently know. I'm not a biologist so I don't know how reliant other creatures are on mosquitoes and their predators.
Another factor that needs to be considered is the other animals that also get malaria, it doesn't just affect humans, and what impact that would have on their populations, some rodent may have a population explosion, eat all the grain in the fields and you get a famine that ends up killing more humans than the malaria did.
I think that before they let this moded bug into the wild they need to answer a few more questions about how its going to impact the environment.
As to the hippies... , maybe for their next trick these researchers can try and eradicate the gene that make people so intolerant of world views that don't match their own.
Not to mention somebody would try to get you convicted of child abuse if you did something like that. I mean you can already get 20 years for drawings that depict characters that >may look under age to some people.
I WANT MY GOATSE-INSPIRED ADS!
Add for the latest iPhone coming up.
AAHHGGG!!!, MY EYES!!
There isn't enough alcohol in the world to rinse that image from my brain.
Wheres the Brain Bleach? I know I have a bottle around here somewhere!

Your right about that, Dell just has them plastered on all the "customize your computer" pages.
maybe he meant he was still using a 14 year old distribution.

When it comes to size you have to stop thinking about the Earth, 12,752km diameter, and think about the atmosphere, 90% within 50km of surface.
Could humans make an impact, yes. The CO2 increase since the start of the industrial revolution shows that.
Is that the main cause of climate change? That is what the real arguments are about.
If Humans are to blame is it too late to do anything? Don't know, don't care. Its been done.
Humanity will need to adapt to climate change or it'll die out, just like everything else on the planet.
AGW.
What, who?
Please, if your using a TLA add a link so those of us who are not into whatever it is your talking about can find out what the Fsck your talking about.

My sanity and I parted company years ago.
Haven't missed it one bit. I'm so much more relaxed without it around.
And they still don't support Linux.
Yeah, yeah, I know, small market share, not enough interest, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah, ad infintitum, ad nausium.

I know, not going to happen.
A couple of points I'd like to point out.

Time will tell.

This may have been the flash from a starquake!! We need to mount a rescue mission at once!
Nah, they all fired at the same time.
We just haven't detected the others yet.
This was just the "muzzle flash", wait till the full blast wave hits.
