Part of the bill forbids states from issuing driver's licenses to illegal aliens, and other parts of the bill are designed to make obtaining a license illegally more difficult.

This alone ought to be sufficient. I can't believe issuing drivers licenses to illegal immigrants is a matter of discussion to begin with. And license issuers should have routines for catching and punishing employees who issue "bonafide" identification to those who shouldn't have it. It is all "too simple and obvious" I guess.

Well, most certainly not that of asshat corporate-whore politicians who want to control our very lives. And what the fuck does this have to do with sides anyway?

It's sad to see that you, like many others, are deluded. You want to be safe, yet people who you aren't safe from still have valid identification. Unfortunately, you can't see the obvious - that this form of control has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with control and oppression.

You may be carfree by choice, but that does not mean you will be granted access to federal buildings, national parks (!!), trains etc. unless you had some kind of approved identity card. From the article:

Under the rules, federal employees would reject licenses or identity cards that don't comply, which could curb Americans' access to airplanes, trains, national parks, federal courthouses and other areas controlled by the federal government.

"When I get on an airplane and someone shows ID, I'd like to be sure they are who they say they are," said Rep. Tom Davis, a Virginia Republican, during a floor debate that started Wednesday.

But they had valid ID. They were who they said they were. Or did I miss the article the day it was revealed that Atta guy (or whoever) was really called Joe Smith?

This was in the US; I live in Norway now.

My experience is that these attitudes are more prevalent in women than in men; my male teachers encouraged me, pushed me on, entered me in math and science competitions, etc. There is the exception - my female biology teacher.

When I got to uni, I learned from other females that they experienced what I experienced - lack of encouragement and negative attitudes about math and science from female teachers, encouragement from male teachers.

Maybe there should be some kind of study about this...?

The problem lies in the fact that women aren't encouraged to study math as much as men are.

No. In fact, they are often told by female teachers that math and science is not anything for girls. Often, these teachers are crap at math and science themselves (if I had a dollar for every mistake I corrected) and pass their inadequecies onto their female pupils.

This female teacher I had in grade school told my mom during a parent-teacher meeting that math and science wasn't important for girls; this was after my mom asked about how I was doing in these subjects and what we were atually learning. Not the smartest thing to say to a mom who has a MsC in chemistry...

On the one hand, you have the claim that the recordings are being used for "quality assurance purposes," meaning checking to see if the call center slaves are doing their job correctly and I guess ethically (not cheating the company). Fine. Whatever.

It's an entirely different thing when these calls are being used as proof of transaction. Proof of transaction implies that the recordings are stored in a register/database with personal data "connected" to each call (Tape A of 11.01.05 09:30:12 - tuxette), whereas quality assurance recordings can be "anonymized." In Norway and most likely with all EU/EEA countries, these recordings must be created and stored according to privacy laws, meaning informed and explicit consent to making the recording for proof of transaction purposes. You end up with a lot of things you need to prove - that tuxette is reallythe person you spoke to, she was legally able to enter the alleged contract, etc.

  15. Re:This does come as a surprise to me though... on Conspiring Against Your Employer? Watch What You Email · · Score: 1
In Norway, a company's IT-policy can stipulate that use of the company e-mail address is for business/company-related matters only and that correspondence may be read by third parties within the company. A reason for reading an employee's e-mail may be that the employee is ill or on holiday and certain information contained in the mails must be obtained.

Private mail marked as "private," or with a subject that indicates that the mail is obviously private ('Grandma's cookie recipe'), is generally treated as such; these mails may be read under circumstances described in company policy or upon obtaining a warrant.

The key to making sure the company stays "safe" and the employees keep their policy is the company having a good IT policy that is enforced consistsently and the employees agreeing to it and following it.
