Sigh, Dang thing still crashes everytime I go to a yahoo news site.
At least it has the decency to restart back in the last known good state. I really hope they get that on fixed soon. I love the browser just a few bugs left to fix.
I can't say that I've experianced any problems with SMS messages being deleivered. In fact we have found that using e-mail to an SMS gateway is more reliable than any of the paging services that we have tried. We used to get pages months later, where as now its rarely more than minutes before we recieve sms messages. I can't think of a single one that I've missed in the last few months and I recieve several hundred per month from the servers here.
I think the reliablity does have alot to do with your carrier and location. Here in NC Verizion seems to be pretty reliable. I can't speak for other locations or carriers though.
See the real use I see for this is as a bluetooth (now that wasn't intened) or like technology headset. ie. you still have a phone but it uses the tooth mic to handle the audio part of your call.
That would be the best of all worlds because you get around the radiation problem, it doesn't matter what provider you are with as long as the phone does bluetooth, you can still surff the wireless web, and I don't have to find and put on my handsfree when I'm driving down the road.
The idea is pretty cool, but if you are transmiting several differnt frequencies at once will you not also need several emiters for each frequency and what happens if one of them gets out of alignment.
The other question is what pricing is going to be. I can guarentee its not going to be cheap since it is line of site only there will not be a HUGE demand for the things even though I can thing of a dozen or more aplications off the top of my head. Although its still got to be cheaper than digging a trench and laying fiber.
Come to think of it with that much band width the television / movie bizz has got to be excited. This has got to be cheaper than a satalite uplink and if there is a remote even within the usable range of this tech all they have to do is set up and shoot the video down it.
What is the efective range of this anyway?
Well there are alot of questions on this tech. (others have posted the ones about weather ect.) but it does look promising and has more uses than I think most people are giving it credit for asuming it doesn't go down compleatly in a rainstorm.
I fail to understand how you can receive an offer that could pull you away from id software. They definatly push the cutting edge of 3d technologies as well as internet conectivity ect. What could be more technically chanengling / exciting? As for the money stand point...I don't know where you could do better. With the growing finacial power of the computer games industry the returns have got to be well worth the time. Then when you come to realize that id stands as the industry powerhouse for 1st person shooters (the most popular of current games) setting the standard for all others to follow you know that all 15 employees are pulling plenty in their paychecks.
In light of that I tend to look for another reason for his departure other than a better offer. I just don't see it. But then I don't work at id so maybe its not the all encompasing computer heavn that we all think it is.
OK so if you are going to take the unit inside to keep it from getting cold what is the problem with the 10C temp change per hour. You are running about in your car with the heat on anyway. The walk from house to car is not going to cool the unit more than 10C unless you have like a 10 - 20 min walk. Also when you get in the car in the morning its going to take about 10 min for the car to heat up. Again not enough time for the temp of the unit to drop 10C. You keep your car at a comfy temp and the same for your house. I doubt that they are more than 10C apart in temp.

I'll be watching for more.
