One of the cooler new ways of sharing music with my friends that I've been playing around with is the ml_www plug-in for Winamp (It was one of Justin Frankel's farewell gifts). The application lets you or anyone else access your media collection from anywhere, and stream or download your audio/video through a browser interface. Of course you can set up passwords and access privelidges. You can pick a song to listen to on your home computer while in the office; stuff like that.
All you need is a Winamp running with the plug-in, and someone--probably someone you trust--drops in your IP in a browser and one of these two windows pops up, depending on which template you're using. You can download the newest versions here.
As apparently, a real geezer, I have no idea what this post is about. Is it just saying that the "Game Boy Advance" has been reverse enginnered, so people can write games for it? And why exactly is this interesting? Isn't the Game Boy a relatively ancient little hand held thing?
People have been able to create their own games for game boy for a while now, and there's even hardware/software to write your own carts for use with the gameboy, to play them. Nintendo looks down on the usage and sales of these carts/cart-writers as they are mostly used to "burn" and play pirated ROMs. Nonetheless, there are many people who use these carts to make GBA games as a hobby.
What this project has managed to do is extend their hobby to GBA's e-reader system. The e-reader is a hardware attachment that you can plug into your gameboy, and it'll let you play special games for the GBA, written on cards. Though these games aren't as complex and full-featured as those on carts, they are much much cheaper, and great for kids as well as collectors.
As for the GBA being an "ancient little hand-held" thing, they are VERY popular, and with good reason. The machine has matured much with it's long-life rechargeable battery, wonderful backlight, and it's stylish case. Throw in the huge gaming collection and it's portability, and you can't lose with it. It's impressive RPG selection (Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, Zelda: Four Swords, Tactcis Ogre, Golden Sun, etc..) is reason enough to invest in one.
Winamp 5 and some other players (not iTunes though I think) have built in functionality that really adds some "oomph" to shuffling: enqueue
On Winamp, if your listening to a huge random playlist of songs, but you want to hear a particular song after the one your listening to, just select the song in the playlist and hit 'Q'. Winamp will finish the currently playing song, then play the song you selected, then return to randomly shuffling the tracks automatically. You can do this with multiple tracks, picking an order you want to hear those songs, and then having Winamp shuffle the rest.
Or just hit 'J' to search the list of the songs in the playlist, and select the song(s) you want to enqueue.
Perhaps they discovered a license violation and took it down to prevent a lawsuit.
They gave Nulloft/Justin no credit for their work, even though the headers clearly had WASTE code in it, their work reports included with the source code mention finding/researching a certain "open source project", and even Justin's documentation was nearly copied and pasted for their User Guide.
Forgot to put this in the parent.
Justin briefly posted his thoughts on the release, on his 04-21-04.plan. From what I understand, he was quite surprised about the whole thing when he first heard about it.
Wow, I could swear I've written something like this before...
Wonder what will happen with that...
Winamp Unlimited covered the complete story yesterday, for those of you who are interested. There are some links/information on there that haven't been mentioned with this discussion.
The mainstreaming of my beloved geek subculture depresses me.
"When did it become cool to be a dork? You know that shifty-acting guy or libertine-looking gal who's always all, "I'm captain punk-rock-opolis," crying "culture-stealer" whenever the opportunity makes itself available? That's me, except with geeks."
"Am I not justified though? Am I to idly watch the tyrants streamline my identity for mass consumption; our folklore exploited and assimilated by wannabe societies? Eccentricaly-dressed girls using their cuteness to conceal their embarassing ignorance, actually thinking that Wolverine's mutant powers are those metal claw thingies? People who haven't paid their dues; who couldn't tell you the difference between a D6 and DOS? Guys who've never carried out torrid--though imaginary--love affairs with Ensign McKnight, trading knowing smirks and grins across the Ten Forward lounge?"
The standards for geek initiation have been lowered too far. Too many times have I seen my dork friends embrace a cute girl as their own, just because she has a mild familiarity with Magic: The Gathering cards.
Oh, and for all the PC assholes who are currently saying "In your face, mac zealots" or whatnot
So far, I've read no one saying that here (maybe they've all just been modded down.). I'm not sure why some people feel they have always assume there are anti-mac characters, standing ready to kick you when you're down. It's interesting though to see how many posts there are already of people doing damage control, brushing it off with a "nothing to see here, move along."
there is a v5.03a that was released last tuesday last week. the only difference should be a bug that was fixed with the repeat all/repeat track/no repeat button, with modern skins.
If nothing, i would've loved to have been there just for the 660 person LAN game they were supposed to have afterwards.
In comparison to what the Windows/Litestep/WindowBlinds communities have been putting out for a while now, these submissions are pretty unimpressive.
There's a similar "theme" competition also running for PC users looking for customization, called the GUI Olympics. They'll be accepting entries until May, but already they have some really nice Winamp skins and Windows themes. Anyone interested in seeing what some of the biggest names in "skinning" are up to should check it out.
Mugger: so is that an ipod you got there mate? Guy: uh, yeah.::mugger takes out knife:: Mugger: alright, hand it over.::mugger takes ipod and runs off::::mugger comes back:: Mugger: uh, you haven't had this for 18 months or so by any chance?
You can chart and discuss the plug-in's progress here. The older, "officially released" version of the plug-in with brief descriptions and reviews is here.
"So what earthly good does licensing FairPlay do for anyone?"
It gives the consumer more choice in buying what he or she feels is the best product for their needs, instead of having to buy the iPod by default just because they use iTMS.
It's kind of sad to see a superior product (IMHO) like the Rio Karma get sidelined due to the iPod mini's momentum/marketing/teenybopper appeal.
It's like seeing your favorite band get no recognition while some guy named "Ludacris" goes platinum several times over.
I loved my iPod when I first got it, but then I got my hands on a Rio Karma. I wanted to believe that my money was well spent, but after playing with the Karma's equally-intuitive UI and seeing their Dev team actually active in their forums and implementing/listening to what their users suggested, I made the switch. Instead of pointless features for a digital audio player like "Breakout" or "Contacts" (I wanted a DAP, not a PDA), the Karma has audio-related features like gapless playback and being able to create/edit several playlists on-the-go. Plus, the sound quality is great, and not as flat as several reviewers have mentioned the iPod as being.
Cushion your audio portable.

There's a sourceforge project going on for the plug-in, but they haven't really brought that site up to speed yet. Most of the progress is in this Winamp Forums thread, with some occasional updates on Winamp Unlimited.

Now if only they could get the games to work without having to blow into the e-reader all the time...
What makes the iPod even better now is that it works great with the number one media player:
Winamp.
Oh yeah! We got plug-ins for everything.

Awesome!
My apologies... It looks like VIA pulled that forum discussion, for obvious reasons. Google Cache doesn't seem to have it either, even though you can still see a bit of text in the Google preview.
All of that was reported on here.
The only reference to WASTE that you could mentioned on their page was buried in a forum discussion.
Actually, with Winamp (all versions, including free), you can even listen to iTMS' DRM'ed AAC tracks with a simple plug-in.
Hell, you can even listen to Real's audio tracks without even having to install anything, if you want.
If they don't want to open up their propietary DRM'ed formats, open them up for them.

ur, sorry about that... mod parent down, and click here for the biggest SF LAN link.

Sorry, I messed up all my links... You can get the plug-in here, to play AAC files with FairPlay, on Winamp. Feel free to mod the previous post down.
Just so you all know, Winamp, being the awesomely versatile player it is, CAN play AAC songs with Fairplay DRM attached, with this convenient plug-in. Of course, there are many limitations still, but that's proprietary DRM for you.
You can chart and discuss the plug-in's progress here. The older, "officially released" version of the plug-in with brief descriptions and reviews is here.
BTW, Winamp 5.03 is already out, in case you weren't informed.
:o) Point well taken... Your post should be the one modded up, not mine.
