  1. Pissed off the wrong guy on Can Blockbuster be Sued Over Facebook/Beacon? · · Score: 2, Insightful

From what I read, maybe we just need to publish the Supreme court credit card #'s and maybe we can get stronger credit protections too. I don't think this law wouldv'e existed if Justice Bork's video rental habbits had not been published in the newspaper.

  2. Not quite yet on Did SCO Get Linux-mob Justice? · · Score: 1

  3. It depends of course on How Fast is Your Turnaround Time? · · Score: 1

If the problem causes your customer to be dead in the water, then 48 hours is too long. If its minor, then no. Imagine if your furnace broke and under warranty and they told you it would be 48 DAYS before somebody got out there. I think the sw industry as a whole doesn't take customer service very seriously.

  4. Fry Him on US Bot Herder Admits Infecting 250K Machines · · Score: 1

I am much more empathetic with the guy who robs the 7/11 for a beer than a guy like this. I'd like to see him get the maximum. But then, I'd like to see more white collar criminals (like the Prince guy at Citi) get some well deserved time. I think on average people don't see white collar crime as that bad because there is no clear individual victim. This guy ripped off 250K people, maybe not with a gun, but still, ripped them off. The Citi guy has ripped off hundreds of thousands and was even paid a bonus to leave. Justice shouldv'e gone after Lay's estate when he died and distributed it to the Enron pension fund too, but we just don't prosecute white collar with a passion.

  5. I prefer BD, so? on Kmart Drops Blu-Ray Players · · Score: 1

Wow, I must be crazy then. I bought my BD because I watch movies & since BD has more studio support amd BD has better PQ/AQ options, it was an easy decision. I doubt many even watch the deleted scenes on a disc. I think its odd how everyone is predicting the death of BD when it enjoys a 2:1 media sales advantage.

  6. Silly on TorrentSpy Must Preserve Data In RAM For MPAA · · Score: 5, Insightful

Sort of like the uncertainty principle. In order to "store" RAM to a permanent medium, RAM will change to write itself to the medium. This reminds me of when I testified and tried to explain that from a programs perspective, VM looks just like RAM, just slower. I never managed to convince the prosecutor. Clearly the legal system hasn't a clue about tech.

  7. How far we've come on Mark Russinovich On Vista Network Slowdown · · Score: 1

I know I'm old, but really, squashing network performance so the user gets to hear their mp3. Maybe for a user who is a musician the music aspect is the most important use of the machine. I think it shows the real roots of windows is for home use, not biz use. You'd think the PHB's woulda figured that out by now. If employees really want to listen to music while working, get their own ipod or other music player.

  8. FYI on Paramount to Drop Blu-Ray for HD-DVD · · Score: 1

Costco/Sams are selling the BD 301 player with 5 free movies for 450, not 600. I imagine by xmas
    they'll be under 400 and Toshiba's ~250.

  9. Out for a quick buck on Paramount to Drop Blu-Ray for HD-DVD · · Score: 1

I think paramount is probably accepting a wad of cash for a limited exclusive period. I mean really, 100mil and maybe a 1 year lockin to HD-DVD. If bluray has won in a year, they'll start pressing BD's again. If HD wins, then they just keep pressing HD's. I doubt they'll make 100mil off bluray this year, so its a big win money wise, and really thats all the suits care about.

  10. Re:Any consensus? on Blue Blu-ray · · Score: 1

I think the consensus is that video is about the same and blu-ray has the edge on audio (if the studio uses the extra capabilities) I think too soon to tell who will win, although I just got a BD player and am crossing my fingers.

Its called a kickback stupid, and they happen in business. Unfortunately, open source is not going to take you to hawaii, get you a hooker, or any number of other favors. I see it in my small biz all the time. People DO get paid off either in cash or prizes all the time. Don't be so naive.

agreed, this box woulda been something 10 years ago. Now though with no HD, its a joke. I have a Roku that was doing HD 5 years ago. I'm looking for a replacement and some of the the new stuff from netgear/linksys looks promising, but obviously if it was hackable it would be better. Hopefully Neuros will come out with an HD offering.

OK, I saw the bit on the news. The woman had paid for "in-home" support (300 bucks I think) and they would not come out. Maybe I'm crazy, but "in-home" is pretty clear. It means I call, they come. If dell can't do this for 300, then they should not have offerred it. When I bought a big-screen, I got "in-home" support (500/5 years with yearly cleaning & adjustment including). When the TV died, I called, they came a day later, not 3 freakin months later as was the case for this poor woman. The woman was not tech-savvy at all. She did some kind of knitting biz. So she did the smart thing, she paid for service and did not get it. No idea what "gold" service from dell means. "In-home" is pretty clear though.

I seem to recall this being one of 1984's concepts. Control the information, rewrite history/science and you control the masses. Clearly, using tax dollars to pay for research and then altering it should be criminalized. (write your senate/congress) Both parties do it. Its just been particularly bad because normally the prez/congress is different parties, so they watchdog each other. Dunno what the answer is. Maybe force congress/prez to be of different parties. That would just acknowledge we live in a 2 party country, not a democracy though. This topic is near and dear to slashotters as we like to push past marketing spin, which is really all thats going on. Its one thing for microsoft or intel, or ?? to keep paying for market research until it nets the answer they want, but its quite another for a tax payed for study to get altered by the PHB's.
