  1. Duh on Default Behavior: Piranha vs. Microsoft SQL Server · · Score: 1

This is no secret, it's well documented, and known, one of the first things you do is change the sa password.

If people fail even the basics of security, such as changing all admin passwords for any program that they are using then this is a non-issue, however if your a clueless setup.exe wanna-be admin, then not only are you going to be 0wn3d, you, your momma, grandma, and homo-sexual poodle deserve to be hacked.

    Peter Drucker?????

I had to laugh at: EVERY STUDENT needs to be given good teaching and instruction on filtering the data that is out there so they themselves can understand information presented and make sound, rational decisions based on it.

The only thing every student needs is to learn to not rely on others to tell them how to think. Common sense goes along ways, Policies by polling means that we will never make the best decisions, hell look at our current administration, the only decision clinton makes with out a poll first, is on who he's going to screw, or how he's going to lie to us. We fire more college grads that cannot or refuse to make a decision on thier own. 4 years of college to get that stupid....

  5. advocacy=everyday on Linux Demo Day Advocacy Event · · Score: 1

We've had this discussion on our local lug listserve, i've heard many positions on it, and can only come to the conclusion that it's a one of the worst ideas.

Linux has not come this far by going head to head with the fud-master!

Unfortunately many linux enthusiasts are starting to emulate the ways that the Opensource movement has despised.

Advocacy is something that is done on a daily basis, not just for one event. I wonder how many of the rocket scientists here on /. are actively participating in their local Linux User Group? , and if one's not available, starting one? Here in Phoenix we have a couple of very active LUG's, with leaders that are motivated and actually follow thru, to make every meeting worth the time to attend.

I will not be participating in any W2K/Linux activism, instead I will continue to work with our LUG, which is currently developing a pilot project to introduce linux into our local school systems, and insuring that our teachers have the skills required to utilize these systems. As well I will keep plugging along, enhancing my linux skills so when the business requirement at work comes, and it's between a NT box and a linux box, i can effectively and with confidence recommend and implement Linux.

On another note, if your going to write an article or rebuttal on the win/lin debate, use the following article as an example on how not to introduce more FUD into the industry. This guy had an excellent opportunity to take and admin's comments line by line and give facts, but it was not to be, the linux-nazi rears his ugly head once again.

Get a clue coward- The Mayor said "He went on to encourage the protesters to remain peaceful. "Be tough on your issues, but be gentle on my town," he said. " It's the mayor's job to not only allow and encourage democracy in action, but to maintain the safety of the citizens. The "peaceful" demonstrations are democratic, the mayors actions show that democracy works. The actions of the few who could careless about the WTO controversy, are the one's who hosed it all up. 8. Robert Young vs. Bill on Jeremy Paxman, BBC, Interview with Bill Gates · · Score: 1

The Interview seems pretty sterile, some have commented on bill's comments re: the downfall of microsoft, not sure if this has been mentioned, but i read one of his NY Times editorials over 2 years ago stating that fact, nothing new here, move along....
As usual the /.'ers pick on minor sentence and flame away, seemingly oblivioius to the prostitution of linux. When Corel violated the GPL, people were tripping over themselves trying to explain that away, and how those of us in the industry should be understanding..heh, yeah....Now corel's president is brought up on charges in canada.

Is it just me or is Robert Young just as repulsive as bill? The main difference is ryoung is sluttin' himself out in an industry that bill was instrumental in building...

  9. Conference Tracks on Whaddya want from a conference? · · Score: 1

Having well designed and implemented conference track sessions are IMHO key to not only a successful conference but to repeat attendees(sp?) And it's not only due to the guest speaker, but you are able to network with other's that have alot of the same issues and questions that you have. When the conference is over, and your working on implementing what you saw, it's not the speaker that's going to help you as much as those that you've met.

Programming tracks, Kernel tracks, Network Admin Track, Corporate track, etc.

The corporate track should be where the "bosses" are all locked in, and all the marketing reps for the different companies, that 6 months ago though linux was treatable with penicillin, are all able to slap each other on the back for being leading, no wait, cutting, hold on!, BLEEDING edge.

Screw the free stuff, if i want something for free, i'll goto a soup kitchen and salvation army! On the otherhand, a well stocked book/clothing/gadget's booth would make a killing!

And yes, I know, it's a sad day when someone actually turns a profit with linux. But Just like Santa Claus I'm sure you'll get over it.

  10. Acceptable Use Policy on Ask Slashdot: Privacy in the Workplace · · Score: 1

Does your company have an acceptable use policy? and if so, have all the employees signed stating that they understand this policy? If so, then the question is quite simple, as has been stated numerous times in the threads, all resources are company related, and you work for the company, as an administrator if you find "non company programs" running on client computers, i doubt that you would have a problem removing them, why the fuss about email?

Most people are at work 8-10 hours a day supposedly to work, they have 14-16 hours outside of work to surf all the porn they want to.

I personally do not want to have to do the metrics required to keep my QOS levels where they need to just because users want to surf out of bound sites.

p.s. a search of google.com for "sample acceptable use policies" will return thousands of hits that might be of assistance.

    Good Luck
