Actually, Ray Tomlinson (the @-sign guy), remained with the part of BBN that stuck with Verizon. Genuity spun off from GTE before the Bell Atlantic/GTE merger. (I'm currently on the same project with him. Wierd.)
Coming next Fall, Fox Productions will roll out its new cable-only SupperVision channel. Packed with the full range of evening-repast-oriented programming like:
COPS: Noshing and Nightsticks When Beef-and-Guinness Pies Attack! Who Wants to Force-Feed a Millionaire?
and
Supermodels: There and Back Again, A Saltine's Holiday
Be sure to watch for it in September, along with Fox's other cable offerings, BreakfastVision and TeaTimeVision.
What's on Fox tonight? Something riebald, no doubt!
> [The patent] is a slap in the face of Tim > Berners-Lee
Slippery argument. Would things be better is amazon gave a large amount of money to tbl ? Or isn't the simple fact that people are making much money with the web is a 'slap' on his face ?
I don't take O'Reilly's comment here to be referring to the money. It has more to do with the spirit in which Berners-Lee acted when he made his ideas and innovations open. Amazon is essentially thumbing their collective nose at Berners-Lee et al, by adding this one trivial bit...and then grabbing it for themselves. The notion of such behavior amounts to the slap in the face, not the lack of due payment, or whatever.
FreeS/WAN IPSec - Encrypt ALL your connections irrespective of the package you're using. VERY nice and VERY powerful. Needs to be installed at both ends, but that's true of all software, really.
Actually, FreeS/WAN does not necessarily need to be installed at both ends (although, to ensure best results...). It has been shown to work with more than a few commercially available IPsec implementations. You just need to tweak things a little, but that's true of all software, really. One thing though, 3DES is a must for this to work (often a BIG issue).
Actually, I find Steve Ballmer's face and general attitude more unsettling that Bill Gate's. All those who weep because they don't know who they will demonize for the *next* thousand years, fear not, for Darth Ballmer has arisen to take your abuse!
How is this different from NBC tranmitting its news over airwaves that its affiliates (effectively) own, with equipment that they own as well. Should we require that the Washington Post not own its printing presses or hire its own delivery boys (and girls)? The AOL-Warner situation is the same, only the medium has changed.
For the record though, this whole merger bringd the queasiness upon me, too.
Not to dispute your (quite valid) point, but an above poster alluded to the fact that the words we use on Slashdot are not *only* seen by Slashdotters. Between my browser and yours, lies a collection of corporate routers, firewalls, filters and logs, that may not take every word in context. Each staffed by a person, who may or may not do the same. Some of these people may not care, but others just might, and they just might decide to make a stink about it. Just a thought.
Great idea! I was already counting the money from our IPO. However, a look at ulinux.com turns up a proto-website apparently dedicated to just such an endeavour. Ah, well maybe someday I *will* think of something first.
If the kids go to school and get good grades, money goes to them in order to open opportunities.
I believe that such funding is available to all students who wish to go to college. This is in the form of the federal student loan program. It is geared towards providing money to even the poorest students. You simply have to pay it back, with interest, after you graduate.
It would be great if all needy students could just get a handout, but not politically feasible (as the opinions of other posters here have demonstrated). Really though, I feel that the loan system is commendable. Often, loans will cover more than tuition, but books and sometimes part of living expenses. Interest rates are breath-takingly low, there is a payback plan for any situation, none of the plans puts a great stress on even a tight budget (under the control of a level-headed person).
Best of all, it's a smart investment from the government's standpoint! You get your money back (mostly), from a population that is college-educated (read: low default rates). Best of all, the primary side-effect is an infusion of educated young people into society.
(end propoganda)
"That's the great thing about kill-bots, you can always make more."
As I learned (much to my embarassment) use of the term "Frisco" pretty much marks you as a tourist in the bay region. It tends to grate on the locals' ears. "'Cisco" tends to be better received. However, since the context was packet routing, every packet passed through [a] 'Cisco [router] several times, at least (haw haw).
"That's the great thing about kill-bots, you can always make more."
It was my impression that you can expect GPS to be inaccurate to about 100 meters anywhere on earth. This being due to deliberate limitations put in place by the US DoD. The exception being, of course, those GPS units used by the US military itself. True?

Re-read the comments so far. I counted maybe two or three that were *truly* negative. Some poked fun or commented neutrally on the news or other comments. All of the rest are positive!
I heard many people saying we should be grateful to these companies for allowing us to see the sourcecode and even fix their bugs. Many even said that it would be very unkind of us to try to make competing products to be released under true free software licenses, when these companies had been so gracious towards us. One of the casualties of this opinion was of course the Harmony project, which aimed to make a LGPL'ed Qt clone.
Well, now that we have this Open Source OS from Apple I guess these people feel that we should bury the Linux project. I mean to follow your logic it is only fair that Apple is allowed to make money on their system, and Linux and FreeBSD are a direct threat to that.
I have yet to encounter the above attitude among the posters here on slashdot (arguably the largest single clearinghouse for linux/gnu/free-software/open-source opinion)!
It seems more like Schalling needed a bigger barn to target. Don't just claim that "you've heard" something. Such a claim is best left on alt.folklore.urban. Back it up with examples! Further, don't fabricate such a stupid argument (if indeed, this is fabricated) just to have an easy time countering it, go after the real opposition.
Actually, a tuba is more properly used to hunt squirrel. It is the french horn that works best on deer, although the Northern Mule Deer, metallurgus animositous, is immune to anything originating in the brass section. Some of the lighter woodwinds work best. And for God's sake avoid strings at all costs!
*Mish* Moneypenny?
I think slashdot needs another classification; "friend" and "foe" aren't cutting it. I want to be able to mark someone as "douchebag".
"Hmm. A one and a half percent uptick in 'teen boobs' searches this weekend."
Let's try for natural intelligence first. Wait, is this a Turing test?
Steve Wozniak == Tom Bombadil

My apologies to the author.
