    From the article:

First, the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) created the legal framework that punished people who bypassed copy protection -- and now, the SSSCA would compel Americans to buy only systems with copy protection on by default. Davis says: "I think the DMCA was a first step."

  5. Corrections, and the really big difference on No X Box for Xmas? · · Score: 1

The Ethernet card and the hard drive are both massive boons for the Xbox. Consoles lack virtual memory, and reading (as well as seeking) from the DVD drive is very expensive. You'll see the hard drive used more as a massive L3 cache than a place to store save game files. More cache means all the "mores": more variety in the models, more animations, more sound effects.

The PS2 actually only has 4 megs of texture memory, and lacks texture compression. Decent texture compression algorithms can easily get you 3.5 to 6:1 compression on your textures. The Dreamcast is the one that has 8 megs of texture RAM. Don't forget that the GeForce also has a very nice hardware T&L engine...

It might be worth mentioning that the PS2 has a mere 2 megs of sound memory, while the XBox's unified memory space lets us as developers decide how much space to use for everything. 256 hardware-accelerated 3D sound effects won't hurt either (Whereas the PS2 has 48 voices and if you want 3D you do the math yourself...)

    Cheers,
A Playstation2, XBox and Gamecube programmer

  6. Yes, but... on Second Thoughts: Microsoft on Trial · · Score: 1

The argument that because the trial did not demonstrate harm to the consumers and therefore the conclusion must somehow be wrong is in error.

The trial did not show harm to the consumers because the trial was never about the harm to the consumers. Antitrust trials are instead about harm to competitors - in this case, pretty much the entire software industry. Re-read IBM's testimony in their dispute with Microsoft over OS/2 shipping on their own systems, or Microsoft's defense that they did not interfere with Netscape's deployment channels because they did not crash Netscape.com.

The consumer's harm is more indirect. We are denied the use of the great software that might have existed.

The fact is, Microsoft's defense at the trial was laughably inadequate on almost every single point of the trial. They were caugh doctoring evidence on a number of occasions (the faked videos, the "look, you can't install IE on this laptop with that guys program" Samsung affair, and the Emails about them repeating studies until they got the numbers they wanted because "this is for the trial").

I fear this recent "Oh, poor Microsoft" sediment stems from lack of memory instead of any real injustice. The recent uprising of the competition (Real and Linux for instance) happened only /after/ the trial was underway; I assert Microsoft could not misbehave against them only because fear kept them in line.

  7. AudioGalaxy! on Running The Numbers: Why Gnutella Can't Scale · · Score: 2

I love AudioGalaxy. It's a lot easier to use (in terms of searching), downloads auto-resume, and downloads automatically come from the fastest available connection nearby. You also tend to get far fewer truncated files because it will, by default, download the most popular version of the MP3 (in terms of size and bitrate), but you can also custom-select which version to download yourself.

It's definitely worth a try (and blocked by far fewer firewalls and ISPs than Napster!).
