I don't think Slashdotters are denigrating the Egyptians for their celebration as much as they are pointing out what a bad idea illuminating aircraft with laser pointers is. In the USA and other countries, doing this sort of thing with laser pointers is a sign of aggression against low flying aircraft and is illegal. So TFA points out the positive motivation behind what we have seen in the media. Even if we think its still a bad idea.
I've seen the same in engineering. People took one discipline or another in college because they were told that it was the fast route to management in many companies. They didn't want to actually design and build things and didn't give a damn about the end product.
Engineering is difficult to self learn. But I'd extend your search criteria to whether the job candidate has a machine shop, electronics bench, woodworking tools, etc. at home and does things as a hobby related to their profession.
You will be using a tablet with its crippled input capabilities. Because we expect you to consume content, not produce it. On the rare occasions that we want to hear from you, you can tweet us from your cell phone. 140 characters at a time is all we want from you anyway.
